Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; or simply Nosferatu) is a classic 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok").

Friedrich Gustav Max Schreck (6 September 1879 – 20 February 1936) was a German actor. He is most often remembered today for his lead role in the film Nosferatu (1922).
Max Schreck was born in Berlin-Friedenau, on 6 September 1879. Schreck received his training at the Berliner Staatstheater (the State Theatre of Berlin) which he completed in 1902. He made his stage debut in Meseritz and Speyer, and then toured Germany for two years appearing at theatres in Zittau, Erfurt, Bremen,Lucerne,Gera, and Frankfurt am Main. Schreck then joined Max Reinhardt's company of performers in Berlin. Many of Reinhardt's troupe made a significant contribution to the cinema.
For three years between 1919 and 1922, Schreck appeared at the Munich Kammerspiele, including a role in the expressionist production of Bertolt Brecht's debut, Trommeln in der Nacht (Drums in the Night) (in which he played the "freakshow landlord" Glubb). During this time he also worked on his first film Der Richter von Zalamea, adapted from a six act play, for Decla Bioscop.

Gustav von Wangenheim (February 18, 1895 – August 5, 1975) was a German actor, screenwriter and director.
Wangenheim was born Ingo Clemens Gustav Adolf Freiherr von Wangenheim in Wiesbaden, Hesse, to parents Eduard Clemens Freiherr von Wangenheim and Minna Mengers. Both of his parents were actors; his father, who used the stage name Eduard von Winterstein, appeared in over 200 films between 1910 and 1960.
Wangenheim made his screen debut in 1914 in Passionels Tagebuch and went on to star in many silent features. Among his works were Fritz Lang's early science fiction film Frau im Mond, where he portrayed Windegger, and Karl Heinz Martin's Das Haus zum Mond. In 1921, Wangenheim was cast in what would prove to be his most enduring role, that of Thomas Hutter (Jonathan Harker) in F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu.
A member of the Communist Party of Germany since 1921, Wangenheim founded the Communist theatre company Die Truppe '31 in 1931. Die Truppe '31 produced three plays, authored and directed by Wangenheim, before it was shut down by order of the Nazi regime in 1933.

Greta Schröder (7 September 1891 – 13 April 1967) was a German actress. She is best known for the role of Thomas Hutter's wife and victim to Count Orlok in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu. In the fictionalized 2000 film, Shadow of the Vampire, she is portrayed as having been a famous actress during the making of Nosferatu, but in fact she was little known. The bulk of her career was during the 1920s, and she continued to act well into the 1950s, but by the 1930s her roles had diminished to only occasional appearances. Following a failed marriage with struggling actor Ernst Matray, she was married to film director Paul Wegener until his death in 1948.

I review the 1922 film directed by F.W. Murnau called Nosferatu. A real estate agent is sent to the eerie region of Transylvania, hidden amidst the towering Carpathian mountains, to deal with an equally eerie client. This movie was the first screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, "Dracula". AND IT ALMOST DIDN'T EXIST! Simply put, film producer Albin Grau wanted to do a retelling of Dracula, but he couldn't obtain the rights. So, he continued with the film, but made some small changes (Dracula changed to Count Orlok). It was unfortunately STILL filed for infringement and all copies of the movie were ordered to be destroyed. This amazing film was released in 1922 by the Prana Film company under the name "Nosferatu," because the studio could not get the rights to the novel "Dracula." It was the Prana Film company's only film, because they soon declared bankruptcy (before the widowed Mrs. Stoker could sue for copyright infringement). In 1927, the Cinémathèque Française, which collected and preserved films, preserved a copy of the second French version of "Nosferatu." I review the 1922 film directed by F.W. Murnau called Nosferatu. A real estate agent is sent to the eerie region of Transylvania, hidden amidst the towering Carpathian mountains, to deal with an equally eerie client. This movie was the first screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel, "Dracula". AND IT ALMOST DIDN'T EXIST! Simply put, film producer Albin Grau wanted to do a retelling of Dracula, but he couldn't obtain the rights. So, he continued with the film, but made some small changes (Dracula changed to Count Orlok). It was unfortunately STILL filed for infringement and all copies of the movie were ordered to be destroyed. They don't make films like this faded, haunting masterpiece of silent cinema anymore. When Dracula was first put on sale for movie rights; the one of the first men to grab it was F.W.Murnau one of the most of the famous German directors of his time. By the time word got back to them about using the rights of the name and storyline of Dracula (Owned by the rights of Florence's widow.) Murnau had alread started production on the film; so to get around it they cut out the name 'Dracula' and replaced it with Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker became Hutter and Ban Helsing became Professor Bulwer; Orlock stalks the gothic streets of Bremen instead of Vistorian London. What is so different from Nosferatu and many of the others films of the time was that most of the film was shot on actually location... -

They don't make films like this faded, haunting masterpiece of silent cinema anymore.
When Dracula was first put on sale for movie rights; the one of the first men to grab it was F.W.Murnau one of the most of the famous German directors of his time. By the time word got back to them about using the rights of the name and storyline of Dracula (Owned by the rights of Florence's widow.) Murnau had alread started production on the film; so to get around it they cut out the name 'Dracula' and replaced it with Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker became Hutter and Ban Helsing became Professor Bulwer; Orlock stalks the gothic streets of Bremen instead of Vistorian London.
What is so different from Nosferatu and many of the others films of the time was that most of the film was shot on actually locations around Eastern Europe; the production hardly used any studio sets. What makes the most haunting feature tho is the sense of realism and the expressionism (most evident in the interiors od Orlok's Castle) that gives the film its hypnotic visual power.
If there is any film a film student would need to have in his/her collection, it's this film. Although it is a hard task to find any surving copies. The reason for this is when the film was released Florence Stoker (widow of the author of Dracula) noticed the comparsion; she pursued the case relentlessly and in July 1925 a German court ordered all prints of the film to be destroyed. Luckily for us several prints of the film survived; a few in which have still been lost over the last few 8 decades.
But thanks to the 2000 release of 'Shadow of a Vampire' a film which looks behind the filming of Nosferatu and starring John Malkovich (F.W.Murnau) and Willem Dafoe (Count Orlok) the film was released for the first time on DVD in it's full original length of 94 minutes.
Sadly soon after the film hit America in 1929; at the age of 43; Murnau was killed in a car crash.
"Men must die. Nosferatu does not die!" proclaimed the original publcity for the film. We can only hope it's the truth for this film.

I have seen the current version here at archive.org and decided to post this one as it is of much better video quality and the accompanying music matches the scene incredibly better. Enjoy this classic horror with the very creepy Max Schrek as the (IMHO) best vampire ever to waltz across the silver screen. -

Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; or simply Nosferatu) is a 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok.
The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok"). Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered that all copies of the film be destroyed. However, a few prints of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema. The film was later released in the United States, where it instantly became a hit success, on June 3, 1929.

Nosferatu le vampire est un film allemand de 1922 de Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, mettant en scène Max Schreck dans le rôle d'un vampire.
À Wisborg en 1838, Thomas Hutter, un jeune clerc de notaire ayant fait un heureux mariage avec Ellen, doit partir pour la Transylvanie afin de vendre une propriété au comte Orlok qui désire avoir une résidence dans la ville. Après un périple sur une terre d’ombres, le jeune homme est accueilli au sein d’un sinistre château par le comte. Durant la transaction, Orlok aperçoit une miniature d'Ellen qui le fascine et décide d’acquérir le bâtiment - proche de la maison du couple - qui lui est proposé. Hutter, hôte du comte, ne tardera pas à découvrir la véritable nature de celui-ci. Alors Nosferatu cheminera vers sa nouvelle propriété, répandant dans son sillage une épidémie de peste. Ellen, bientôt en proie aux mains griffues de Nosferatu qui la convoite, laissera le comte faire d’elle sa victime et sacrifie son sang au vampire pour sauver la ville frappée par la peste.

Nosferatu - Sound Design for Film Major Project
Sound Design for Film major project, a tension climax clip from the middle of German expressionist horror film Nosferatu (1922), set to sound and music by me. To me, a key theme throughout Nosferatu is the duality between the real and the unreal, day and night, safe and fearful, love (Hutter) and lust (Nosferatu), and my project aimed to juxtapose those two states against each other, showing Hutter and Ellen's character's mental states as they shift between lucid and entranced, safe and fearful. Often I've opted throughout for a more dream-like application of sound to picture, where sound symbols represent the thing they are synced to without truly being attached to that thing, e.g. the bell toll of the clock, or Nosferatu's footsteps as he approaches Hutter's bed. To me, a key theme throughout Nosferatu is the duality between the real and the unreal, day and night, safe and fearful, love (Hutter) and lust (Nosferatu), and my project aimed to juxtapose those two states against each other, showing Hutter and Ellen's character's mental states as they shift between lucid and entranced, safe and fearful.
Often I've opted throughout for a more dream-like application of sound to picture, where sound symbols represent the thing they are synced to without truly being attached to that thing, e.g. the bell toll of the clock, or Nosferatu's footsteps as he approaches Hutter's bed. Some scenes are more literal than others, and this is tied to Hutter and Ellen's mental states at the time.

Durante el largo viaje, Hutter pernocta en una posada, donde ojea un viejo tratado sobre vampiros que encuentra en su habitación. Una vez en el castillo, es recibido por el siniestro conde. Al verle partir hacia su nuevo hogar, Hutter teme por Ellen.
"Nosferatu" fue una libre adaptación de la novela de Bram Stoker "Drácula" a la que se cambió el nombre para no tener que pagar derechos de autor. La viuda de Stoker logró que se reconociese la autoría, y obtuvo una orden judicial para destruir los negativos y todas las copias de la película. Las copias distribuidas en el resto del mundo impidieron su total desaparición.
