BREAKING NEWS! A Grantham electricity substation has burst into flames after an explosion. Thick, black smoke is pouring out of the raging fire. It can be seen from miles around.
Nobody knows the exact cause of the fire but it is still raging due to the oil from the 'oil cooled' transformers that has caught alight.
The power has been cut to most of the town. Consequently, the traffic lights through town are off, the roads are gridlocked and at least 3000 homes have been left without power.

So we drove into Grantham with no directions other than following this black smoke rising up into the air that could be seen for miles around – not even knowing how far away the fire could be. But it was easy to find as we approached because people were gathering to see what was happening.
The air was warm. Black smoke was rising up high like steam from a kettle. But a thin, dry smoky mist was filling the air around us and an unpleasant smell of burning plastic was lingering.
Emergency services were starting to arrive and it quickly became apparent that getting right up close would not be possible and would be seemingly too dangerous.
We couldn’t get our heads round why the blaze was burning so ferociously and producing so much pollution. The fire was coming from an electricity substation almost in the very centre of Grantham. After speaking to members of the police service we learned that oil is used to cool the transformers. The transformers had overheated and there had been an explosion. 36,000 litres of oil is stored at the substation and that was what was burning.
Grantham had come to a standstill. We soon discovered that main roads and side streets had been closed, buildings had been evacuated and even trains had come to a halt. Skirting round the edges of the cordoned off area, following the trail of the red and white police tape, people everywhere, like us, were moving around to get the best view – standing on walls, shoulders and roofs to get that best vantage point.
This was one of the most dramatic fires to occur in Lincolnshire in recent history, made more serious by the real possibility of a second explosion. It was feared that a pylon might catch fire and fall on to the train tracks.
It is said that 13,000 homes were without electricity for a time. Businesses such as Marks and Spencer who had to throw away spoiled food from uncooled freezers were badly affected.
We don’t know exactly how long the fire lasted but throughout the night the emergency services fought the blaze. Even the RAF, who used specialist equipment, were called out to help.
Detailed investigations are now underway to find out the exact causes of the incident.

Grantham (pronounced /ˈɡrænθəm/) is a market town within the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It bestrides the London to Edinburgh East Coast Main Line railway and the River Witham, and is bounded to the west by the A1 main north-south road.
Grantham is about 26 miles (42 km) south of the city and county town of Lincoln, and about 24 miles (39 km) east of the city of Nottingham. The resident population at the 2001 Census was 34,592 in about 18,000 households, excluding the adjacent village of Great Gonerby.
The town is best known as the birthplace of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and the place where Isaac Newton went to school, at The King's School. It is close to an ancient Roman road, and was the scene of Oliver Cromwell's first advantage over Royalists during the English Civil War at Gonerby Moor. Grantham is also notable for having the first female police officers in the United Kingdom, notably Edith Smith in 1914, and producing the first running diesel engine in 1892, and the UK's first tractor in 1896.

The air was warm. Black smoke was rising up high like steam from a kettle. But a thin, dry smoky mist was filling the air around us and an unpleasant smell of burning plastic was lingering.
Emergency services were starting to arrive and it quickly became apparent that getting right up close would not be possible and would be seemingly too dangerous.
We couldn’t get our heads round why the blaze was burning so ferociously and producing so much pollution. The fire was coming from an electricity substation almost in the very centre of Grantham. After speaking to members of the police service we learned that oil is used to cool the transformers. The transformers had overheated and there had been an explosion. 36,000 litres of oil is stored at the substation and that was what was burning.
Grantham had come to a standstill. We soon discovered that main roads and side streets had been closed, buildings had been evacuated and even trains had come to a halt. Skirting round the edges of the cordoned off area, following the trail of the red and white police tape, people everywhere, like us, were moving around to get the best view – standing on walls, shoulders and roofs to get that best vantage point.
This was one of the most dramatic fires to occur in Lincolnshire in recent history, made more serious by the real possibility of a second explosion. It was feared that a pylon might catch fire and fall on to the train tracks.
It is said that 13,000 homes were without electricity for a time. Businesses such as Marks and Spencer who had to throw away spoiled food from uncooled freezers were badly affected.
We don’t know exactly how long the fire lasted but throughout the night the emergency services fought the blaze. Even the RAF, who used specialist equipment, were called out to help.
Detailed investigations are now underway to find out the exact causes of the incident.

When I watch Downton Abbey, I keep thinking of my friend, the Earl of Wemyss, and his grand Stanway House in the Cotswolds. For 20 years, I’ve been dropping in on this noble manor house. And recently, as I’ve caught up on all six seasons of the PBS hit Downton Abbey, I keep thinking that the Earl of Wemyss is like a long-lost descendant of His Lordship of Downton Abbey, the Earl of Grantham. About 15 years ago, the Earl of Wemyss generously showed our TV crew around his gorgeous home.
