STORYLINE
Socialist leader George Papandreou capped a remarkable political comeback by handily winning re-election as party leader despite leading his party to its second successive electoral defeat just two months ago.
The result for the 55-year-old leader, the son and grandson of multi-term prime ministers, reinforced a national tradition of dynastic politics.
His father,
Andreas Papandreou, founded and led Socialist PASOK from
1974 until his death in
1996, while his grandfather and namesake twice served as prime minister.
His win comes after an often bitter and personal two-month campaign, and represents a striking reversal of fortune following his party's dispiriting loss in September, its worst in 30 years, which many blamed on his vacillating leadership.
It also confounded those who believed the
U.S.-born, former foreign minister lacked the stomach for such a fight.
Papandreou, who is also president of the
Socialist International and a noted bridge builder with cross-Aegean rival
Turkey, has frequently been painted as an internationalist at heart, ill suited to the rough and tumble of Greek domestic politics.
Senior party official Giorgos Anomeritis, who headed the committee responsible for the results, said that, with 25 percent of votes counted at nearly 1,
500 election centres nationwide, Papandreou had taken 60.03 percent.
His main challenger, Evangelos Venizelos, took 33.54 percent. A third candidate,
Costas Skandalidis, trailed with 6.28 percent.
Out of
140,735 votes counted, Papandreou had taken 83,931 Venizelos 46,894 and Skandalidis 8,784.
Venizelos conceded defeat.
