Television is one of the major mass media of the United States. As of 2011, household ownership of television sets in the country is 96.7%, and the majority of households have more than one set, with approximately 114,200,000 American households owning at least one television set as of August 2013. The peak ownership percentage of households with at least one television set occurred during the 1996–97 season, with 98.4% ownership.
As a whole, the television networks that broadcast in the United States are the largest and most distributed in the world, and programs produced specifically for U.S.-based networks are the most widely syndicated internationally. Due to a recent surge in the number and popularity of critically acclaimed television series during the 2000s and the 2010s to date, many critics have said that American television is currently undergoing a modern golden age.
In the United States, television is available via broadcast (also known as "over-the-air") – the earliest method of receiving television programming, which merely requires an antenna and an equipped internal or external tuner capable of picking up channels that transmit on the two principal broadcast bands, very high frequency (VHF) and ultra high frequency (UHF), in order to receive the signal – and four conventional types of multichannel subscription television: cable, unencrypted satellite ("free-to-air"), direct-broadcast satellite television and IPTV (internet protocol television). There are also competing video services on the World Wide Web, which have become an increasingly popular mode of television viewing since the late 2000s, particularly with younger audiences as an alternative or a supplement to the aforementioned traditional forms of viewing television content.
Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He was known as a master of quick wit and is widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators.
He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life.
His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as "Groucho glasses": a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.

Parody and Taste in Postwar American Television Culture documents how Americans grew accustomed to understanding politics, current events, and popular culture through comedy that is simultaneously critical, commercial, and funny. Along with the rapid growth of television in the 1950s, an explosion of satire and parody took place across a wide field of American culturein magazines, comic books, film, comedy albums, and on television itself. Taken together, these case studies dont just analyze and theorize the production and consumption of parody and television...

Portrayed by George Clooney in the film Good Night and Good Luck, Friendly, together with Edward R. Murrow, invented the television documentary format and subsequently oversaw the birth of public television. Juggling the roles of producer, policy maker, and teacher, Friendly had an unprecedented impact on the development of Cbs in its heyday, wielded extensive influence at the Ford Foundation under the presidency of Mcgeorge Bundy, and trained a generation of journalists at Columbia University during a tumultuous period of student revolt.ralph Engelman's biography ...

Much of the critical scholarship addressing mid-century televised housework claims that domestic activities marginalize female characters, removing them from scenes involving important familial discussions and placing them in devalued positions. This book challenges the notion that housework functions primarily as a mechanism through which female characters are marginalized, devalued, invisible, or passive, and instead proposes a different reading o...
Read your free e-book: http://installapp.us/mebk/50/en/B001BWYJHG/book Coverage of Mexican-american youth gangs has been a staple of local television news in the United States for decades, and its form and content have come to embody many journalistic cliches: the rising tide of violence, the spread of drug addiction, the alienated minority youth. But as this bold new study argues, these stories contain gross exaggerations that lead to the reinforcement of stereotypes about Mexican-american young people and the Mexican-american community in general. Indeed, the police and community leaders greatly influence the content of this coverage by deciding what information to make available to the news media, while reporters select certain sources and ignore others, thus slanting the story even fur...

Read your free e-book: http://installapp.us/mebk/50/en/B00EVWKBVQ/book In this book, Nathanson examines how contemporary American television and associated digital media depict womens everyday lives as homemakers, career women, and mothers. Her focus on American popular culture from the 1990s through the present reveals two extremes: narratives about women who cannot keep house and narratives about women who only keep house. Nathanson looks specifically at the issue of time in this context and argues that the media constructs panics about domestic time scarcity while at the same time offering solutions for those very panics. Analyzing Tv programs such as How Clean is Your House, Up All Night, and Supernanny, she finds that medias portrayals of womens time is crucial to understanding defini...

This is a filmed record (not a kinescope) of the first actual "public" television broadcast in the United States. (There were perhaps three receivers capable of receiving the signal.) This show starts with the "live" portion (which has been filmed, rather awkwardly....it's sometimes hard to see the actual image being broadcast). Then there are some Pathé newsreels which were broadcast, followed by more live footage. A rather befuddled Ed Wynn vamps for a bit, and there are appearances by Eddie Green and George Wilshire, as well as The Pickens Sisters. This show was broadcast to the various RCA licencees, who were in attendance, watching on one of the receivers.. Some identify themselves on-camera.

Contestant teams usually consisted of one male and one female, most selected from the studio audience. Occasionally, famous or otherwise interesting figures were invited to play (e.g., a Korean-American contestant who was a veteran and had been a prisoner of war during the Korean War). After his signature introduction of "Here he is: the one, the only..." by Fenneman and finished by a thunderous "GROUCHO!" from the audience, Marx would be introduced to the music of "Hooray for Captain Spaulding", his signature song. After which, Groucho would be introduced to the contestants and engage in humorous conversation for a lengthy period of time where Groucho both improvised his responses and employed prepared lines written by the show's writers using preshow interviews. Back in the day, when i was a teenager
Out on my own fall in love with strangers.
Oh no desire, what are you putting me through?
You look beautiful in 1992.
I'm watching, what do i want to be?
Baby, i'm in love with possibility.
Give me sex, and give me patience.
I can't wait, i can't wait. change the station.
I'm watching american television.
Back in the day waiting for a sign to move.
I got nothing to say, i got something to prove.
Oh me, oh my, teenagers get bored.
You look beautiful in 1994.
I'm dreaming, it's not a fantasy.
Baby, i'm in love with reality.
Give me joy, give me emotion.
I can't wait, i can't wait, change the program.
I'm watching american television.
Here we are, now we are the boulevard.
Dropped off our fear at the junkyard.
Oh man, we can turn it up load.
You look beautiful, right here, right now.
I'm still watching, what do i want to be?
Baby i'm in love with possibility.
Give me sex, indecision.
I'm watching american television.
I'm watching, what do i want to be?
