Everything you need to know about finding a Gate Installer

Whether it is a pedestrian access gate or a driveway gate, choosing a gate in the same style as your fence will provide consistency in the design. Whether made to measure or pre-made, there are several types of gates to choose from, depending on your needs. Made to measure gates are great if you are after a unique design. Gates may be sliding or swing and manually or electronically operated.

Choosing a Gate

When choosing a gate you will typically have the choice of the following materials:

  • Timber
  • Steel
  • Aluminium
  • Wrought iron

Gate Durability

However, whichever gate you choose must be secure and for this purpose, it is important to ensure that quality fixtures and locks are used. There are a wide variety of locking options available, from the traditional latch to sophisticated electronic locks that can be integrated into your home security system.

When hanging your gates, stainless steel or hot dipped galvanised steel should be used to minimise rust and corrosion, which can make gates difficult to operate. If you are using treated pine in your fence, hot dipped galvanised stainless steel must be used. A dedicated gate installer will be able to advise you on what gate best suits your home and provide a quote.

How Much Do Gates Cost?

Gates can vary from a couple of hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. The material and size of any gate will ultimately determine the final price. Standard off the shelf timber gates will bet at the budget end of the scale, with custom made gates in wrought iron or aluminum at the top end of the scale. Ensure that the cost of installation - which will be a labour charge - is included in any quote you receive. Motorisation will also increase the cost of a gate, as will other accessories such access control systems.
