Herodotus
Herodotus (/hᵻˈrɒdətəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἡρόδοτος Hēródotos, pronounced [hɛː.ró.do.tos]) was a Greek historian who was born in Halicarnassus, Caria (modern-day Bodrum, Turkey) and lived in the fifth century BC (c. 484–425 BC). A contemporary of Socrates, he is widely referred to as "The Father of History" (first conferred by Cicero); he was the first historian known to have broken from Homeric tradition to treat historical subjects as a method of investigation: specifically by collecting his materials systematically and critically, and then to arrange them into a historiographic narrative.The Histories is the only work he is known to have produced — a record of his "inquiry" (or ἱστορία historía) on the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars including a wealth of geographical and ethnographical information. Although some of his stories were fanciful and others inaccurate, he states he was reporting only what was told to him and was often correct in his information. Despite Herodotus' historical significance, little is known of his personal history.

Anastasia Bakogianni joins Professor Chris Carey at UCL’s Department of Greek and Latin to talk about his forthcoming commentary on Herodotus’ Book 7. A highpoint in Herodotus’ Histories, the subject of this book is the inexorable march of the Persian forces against Greece, which culminates in the famous battle at Thermopylae. Chris’ commentary will join those of a number of other eminent scholars currently working on Herodotus’ Histories for Cambridge University Press’ Green and Yellow series. Chris describes Herodotus’ account of the battle as a ‘riveting story of courage and treachery’. He talks about the recent resurgence of interest in Herodotus’ Histories and how new scholarship is uncovering hidden depths in the work of this less well-explored ancient author. For Chris, Herodotus’ Histories is the book he would choose as his Desert Island pick, simply because every time he returns to it, he discovers something new in Herodotus’ account of the Persian Wars.

The best way to combat jihadism, he proposes, is to recognise the centrality of Muhammad to Islam – and that he comes in many forms.
There is the moral leader who swallowed abuse peaceably; and there is the war leader who ordered people who insulted him put to death. How best, then, to de-radicalise the Prophet?

His novella Bubba Ho-Tep was adapted to film by Don Coscarelli, starring Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis. His story "Incident On and Off a Mountain Road" was adapted to film for Showtime's "Masters of Horror." He is currently co-producing several films, among them The Bottoms, based on his Edgar Award-winning novel, with Bill Paxton and Brad Wyman, and The Drive-In, with Greg Nicotero. He is Writer In Residence at Stephen F. Austin State University, and is the founder of the martial arts system Shen Chuan: Martial Science and its affiliate, Shen Chuan Family System. He is a member of both the United States and International Martial Arts Halls of Fame. He lives in Nacogdoches, Texas with his wife, dog, and two cats.
