South Main

South Main, or SoMa, is an area of Vancouver that centers on Main Street, and is part of the larger Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

While no official boundary exists for South Main, its centre is roughly at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street. Its boundaries roughly extend from East 2nd Avenue to East 33rd Avenue along Main Street. Recent developments along the nearby Kingsway corridor are extending the boundaries eastwards. The name is something of a marketing misnomer, as fully 80% of Main Street lies south of the area defined as "South Main".

South Main is developing quickly and becoming one of the trendier new areas in East Vancouver for living and dining. SoMa is a shortened version of the name South Main and was coined only in recent years by the area's promoters, and is meant to evoke the SoHo (short for "South of Houston" Street) in Manhattan, which in turn is an allusion to the London shopping district of the same name. Another SoMa exists in San Francisco, which refers to the area "South of Market" Street. Soma is also the name of an intoxicating beverage used in a Vedic ritual. These multiple connotations reflect the intent of entrepreneurs and developers to carry out a "relaxed kind of gentrification" in the area to create a cosmopolitan and prosperous commercial district. To most Vancouverites, however, South Main is part of Mount Pleasant and the trendier term is not widely used in conversation.

Samsung Focus

The Samsung Focus (also known as the SGH-i917 and Samsung Cetus) is a slate smartphone which runs Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. It features a 1 GHz Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processor, a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED screen, and 8GB of internal storage (expandable to 40GB with a 32GB microSD card). As of November 2011, it is the 4th lightest and thinnest Windows Phone, behind the Samsung Focus Flash, HTC Titan and the Samsung Focus S, a more high-end version of the original Focus.

History

Release and marketing

The Focus was released on November 8, 2010, along with the HTC Surround on AT&T. It was marketed by Samsung as being the only Windows Phone to feature a microSD card slot.

The Focus was also released on November 8, 2010 on Rogers Wireless in Canada, Rogers handsets differ in appearance as they lack carrier branding instead having the Samsung logo appear at the top where the AT&T logo would normally appear. The Samsung Focus is no longer available on Rogers Wireless as of March 20, 2012.

Cinimod Studio

Cinimod Studio is a London-based design studio involved in various architecture and lighting design projects. Projects undertaken typically involve a wide mix of media and technologies, and often involve interactive design.

Beginnings

In 2007 architect Dominic Harris founded Cinimod Studio. He had trained at the Bartlett School of Architecture and worked for many years with architecture firms Future Systems and Softroom, and for the interactive design firm Jason Bruges Studio.

The Studio

Cinimod Studio operates from a Notting Hill studio. In October 2008, director Dominic Harris was the recipient of the "Breakthrough Talent of the Year" at the FX International Interior Design Awards 2008. In November 2009, Cinimod Studio was awarded "Best Bar or Restaurant" at the FX International Design Awards 2009. In 2010 the studio won further recognition at the Lighting Design Awards 2010, winning "Best Hotel or Restaurant" lighting scheme. In 2012 Cinimod Studio won 2 awards at the Lighting Design Awards 2012 with first prize in the "Small Retail Projects" and "Special Projects" category. in March, 2014, Cinimod Studio won "Best Luminaire" at the Lighting Design Awards 2014 with their Moon Chandelier, and in the Lighting Design Awards 2015 Cinimod Studio won the "Special Projects" category for the "Emergence" sculpture at Heathrow Terminal 2. The studio consists of a multi-disciplinary team of designers that includes architects, product designers, lighting designers and software engineers.
