A Class VII student allegedly committed suicide by hanging hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her home in west Delhi’s Khyala area Saturday.
According to police, the girl had gone with her mother to the Parent-Teacher Meeting, organised by the government. “She was scolded by her mother after teachers said she was weak in studies,” said a senior police officer.
Police said on reaching home at 12.30 pm, the girl confined herself to a room and hanged herself. “We got a call about the suicide at 12.45 pm and a police team reached the girl’s house. The body has been sent for a postmortem,” said an officer.
Inquest proceedings into the incident have been initiated under Section 174, he added.
Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted, “Khyala mein bachchi ki maut dukhad hai. Maine paristhitiyon ki jaanch ke liye Magistrate jaanchke aadesh diye hai (The death of the girl in Khyala is unfortunate. I have ordered a magisterial inquiry to examine the circumstances).
AAP MLA from Rajouri Garden Jarnail Singh said, “The information we have received about the incident is not completely clear, so it would not be right to say anything more about it at this stage. It is not confirmed that the girl went to school Saturday when the PTM was held. Some sources said only her mother went to the meeting. The death of any child is saddening. If anybody is found responsible, he or she will be dealt with as per the law.”
