Georges Braque (/brɑːk/; French: [bʁak]; 13 May 1882 – 31 August 1963) was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1906, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque’s work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso. Their respective Cubist works were indistinguishable for many years, yet the quiet nature of Braque was partially eclipsed by the fame and notoriety of Picasso.
Georges Braque was born on 13 May 1882 in Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise. He grew up in Le Havre and trained to be a house painter and decorator like his father and grandfather. However, he also studied artistic painting during evenings at the École des Beaux-Arts, in Le Havre, from about 1897 to 1899. In Paris, he apprenticed with a decorator and was awarded his certificate in 1902. The next year, he attended the Académie Humbert, also in Paris, and painted there until 1904. It was here that he met Marie Laurencin and Francis Picabia.
In conjunction with the exhibition Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928-1945, this video showcases the technical examinations of four Braque paintings in our collection. These studies revealed new discoveries about Braque's working methods, his palette, pigments, and the layering structure and composition of his materials. The videos are organized into chapters and feature associate conservator Patricia Favero narrating her findings. She examines paintings in visible, raking, and ultraviolet light and with a stereo-microscope and an infrared camera.
In the early 20th century, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso invented Cubism and shook the foundations of Western art. But in the 1930s, as the rise of fascism brought new urgency to questions of aesthetics and politics, Braque's fractured still lifes and bourgeois interiors remained emphatically inward-looking. Yet Braque's painting was not as separate from outside events as Braque might have it, argues Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928-1945, the first major U.S. museum exhibition dedicated to the artist in 16 years.

Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928--1945 offers the first detailed examination of Braque's experiments with still lifes and interiors during the years leading up to and through World War II, an overlooked and transitional period in the career of this leading founder of Cubism. Braque employed the genre of the still life to conduct a lifelong investigation into the nature of perception through the tactile and transitory world of everyday objects.

Claire Barry, Chief Conservator, Kimbell Art Museum and Bart Devolder, Associate Conservator of Paintings, Kimbell Art Museum This two-part lecture will discuss Picasso and Braque's artistic intentions in their Cubist paintings, with special emphasis on issues of surface, format and framing, as well as the artists' painting materials and creative process in greater depth, including a step by step look at the construction of a Cubist painting.
In conjunction with the exhibition Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928--1945, conservator Patricia Favero delivered the talk Investigating Material and Process in Georges Braque's Still-Life Paintings, 1928--1944. This lecture discusses the technical study of Braque's paintings, including an overview of the methods of examination and paint analysis employed by conservators and conservation scientists, and new discoveries about Braque's approach to painting and his mastery of his materials. At the Phillips, she has carried out technical studies on works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Henri Rousseau, and...
Christine Poggi, Professor of Art History, University of Pennsylvania Writing in 1912, the poet André Salmon characterized Picasso and Braque as "seekers, anxious to make us submit to all the edges of the prism at once, confusing touch and sight, which are the purveyors of such entirely separate joys." This talk will examine the ways in which cues to visual and tactile experience are deliberately "confused" in Cubist painting of 1910-1912, with often surprising or humorous results.
