Pre-ordering Civilization VI gets you early access to the Aztecs

But after 90 days my Eagle Warriors will be obsolete!

An interesting development in Firaxis’s drip-fed marketing campaign for upcoming strategy title Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: the Aztec civilisation has been revealed and will be in the game at day one, but unless you pre-order, you’ll have to wait 90 days before you get to play them. It’s only after this period has elapsed that launch day purchasers will get access.

Since pre-orderers will be able to play the Aztecs from day one, there’s no ambiguity this time: complaints of “cut content” are entirely accurate. No doubt Firaxis will hope that reinserting the Aztecs for free after those 90 days are up will prevent an Internet hatestorm like that which befell Creative Assembly over the Chaos Warriors race pack, but hatestorms are seldom as predictable as their meteorological equivalents. So far, though, the Like-to-Dislike ratio on the reveal video indicates clear skies for the famous strategy studio.

Speaking of, the Aztecs are looking great. Montezuma, a Civilization institution, is back, and as warlike as ever, with a slew of unique features that can sustain and reward a belligerent, expansionist playstyle. The Eagle Warrior unit can spawn builders when defeating enemies, and Aztec builders can add production to districts to kickstart your infrastructure in the early game. Luxury resources grant bonus amenities (the equivalent of Happiness in Civ V), and each improved luxury in Aztec territory gives a combat bonus to all units. Finally, the unique building, the Tlachtli, gives amenities, Faith, and Great General points. You can watch the Aztec reveal above.

Civilisations in Civilization VI are looking slightly more detailed than in Civilization V, with two unique abilities, a unique building or district, and sometimes as many as two unique units. It’s been tantalising to watch the reveal videos and imagine how these new, more specialised civilisations will fit into the game.

Strategy fans, are you hyped? Or are you annoyed at Firaxis’s shenanigans in locking off a day one faction for three whole months? Sound off in the comments.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is due for release on PC on October 21.
