Across this devastated town, students returned to schools Tuesday, marking the beginning of a new reality.
With their sense of normalcy shattered after last week's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, students at other schools are seeing more police and counselors on hand. And teachers who face a new, tremendous burden.
Classes will discuss the tragedy in an age-appropriate manner, the teachers' union said.
But the young children of Sandy Hook aren't going back to school yet.
Their school is a crime scene, the site where 20 kids and six faculty members were slaughtered.
It's not clear when they'll resume classes. But when they do, it'll be at a different school in neighboring Monroe, Connecticut.
Meanwhile, at least two more victims, 6-year-olds Jessica Rekos and James Mattioli, had burials scheduled for Tuesday.
More details about the gunman who turned a school day into carnage are slowly emerging. And under the cloud of national mourning, a renewed debate about gun control is heating up.
Investigators have so far been unable to retrieve data from a computer taken from the home of the gunman, Adam Lanza, a law enforcement official said Tuesday.
It appears that Lanza had smashed the computer, extensively damaging the hard drive, the official said, adding that the FBI is assisting Connecticut State Police in trying to retrieve data from the computer.
Lanza's mother was shot four times in the head while she slept in her bed, Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver said Tuesday.
Adam Lanza killed himself with a shot to the front of his head from a handgun, the medical examiner said.
Toxicology tests are under way to determine whether Adam Lanza had taken medicines, Carver said.

While children from Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 students and six educators died in Friday's rampage, likely won't return until January, thousands of students from five other schools in the Newtown Public School District went back to class Tuesday morning. The schools opened with a two-hour delay and an increased security presence, with police officers at every building.
Thousands of students at schools in the Newtown Public School District went back on Tuesday, but children from Sandy Hook Elementary School won't return to classes until January.
One school, Head O'Meadow Elementary School, was slated to reopen but did not after a phone threat was made against the school. A district spokeswoman said the threat posed no real danger but students and staff were instructed to stay home "out of an abundance of caution," a spokeswoman said.
Students from Sandy Hook Elementary School will be moved to Chalk Hill School, a former middle school about seven miles away in Monroe. Officials said the classrooms will be set up just as they were at Sandy Hook.
Sue Selner, 44, brought her son to Reed Intermediate School, where a counseling center has also been established. He is in fifth grade and graduated from Sandy Hook Elementary last year. Her younger son, 4 years old, was slated to start kindergarten there next year.
"It was scary," she said about bringing her older child back to school. "I thought it was OK. He doesn't really understand what's going on. His main concern was that the shooter was dead."
Ms. Selner said she reassured him by saying, "You're safe, we love you, your teacher loves you." She thought it was important to get back to a normal routine.
"The longer you keep them out, the harder it is," said Ms. Selner. "They need routine. They can't see fear in us because it passes on to them."
After dropping him off, she stopped in for breakfast at Bagel Delight with her youngest child. She splurged on three cookies—one gingerbread, one Santa and one snowman—because the 4-year-old couldn't decide which he wanted most.
"I can't say no to anything right now," she said with a half-smile.

On April 24, 2015, we live streamed with our reporter SOS inside the hearing room from Hartford Ct. on the FOIA request, to finally face officials in regard to the Sandy Hook School questions.
Swan Song hosted the conversation along with Tony Mead, ZeeRoe3, Brian Roberts and UpNorthOfThe49th. We presented information leading up to the hearing on the many questions Wolfgang Halbig has been trying to get officials to answer.
We outlined how Wolfgang has forced these officials to finally answer some of the many questions that are so important to be concerned over not only on the condition of the school Sandy Hook Elementary but also on the response from the police and school division.
Questions address today were.
1. Why all documentation was not presented on the supposed security system put in place by the school regarding the published letter from Mrs. Hochsprung apparently sent home to student on the new protocols for school security.
2. Where are the school boards documents regarding the children from the Sandy Hook Choir who attended the Super Bowl performance. Halbig presented the administration requires all outside activities should have been posted or filed of these children’s attendance. His request was put forward regarding the children’s names who attended.
3. Request was addressed on who was hired and contracted for the sanitation and clean-up of the school after the supposed incident. These contracts were not presented nor address to any extent.
4. Requests were made regarding who ordered and approved the placement of the port - o - potties on school property and what contractors were used and when those requested items were ordered. Also who had ordered the well-known electric street sign behind Gene Rosen asking people to report to the staging area.
5. They requested information on the Principles letters and emails and no response was really presented.
6. Requests were addressed regarding why the formal file was not provided by the Commissions office.
7. Detailed reports by police were addressed however fall far short on the request. As well the requested Dash Cam videos were not adequately provided. Addressed were also the fact the 911 calls were posted in reports as unwanted person and Threat level as Medium. Also who was in contact with coordinating State and Regional police and helicopter. They indicated no one and no communication between any of them.
8. Questions were addressed to the Janitor of Sandy Hook regarding school conditions being so adherent for the children to attend.
In conclusion the hearing ended with the Commission saying they need to continue on another date as well Halbigs lawyer put in record problems with having subpoenaed individuals were not in attendance and failed to appear. So they need to press these individuals appear in a newly scheduled further hearing.

Students returned to school in the shattered Connecticut town of Newtown on Tuesday for the first time since a gunman's rampage killed 26 people in an elementary school.
At Hawley Elementary School, parents walked their children to the school door where they were greeted by a local police officer.

"Making the kids safe and happy. That's all we are here for is to make sure they are safe and happy."
Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20-year-old Adam Lanza gunned down a score of 6- and 7-year-olds and six adults on Friday, will remain closed.
It is an active crime scene, with police coming and going past a line of 26 Christmas trees, one for each victim, decorated with ornaments, stuffed animals and balloons in the school colors of green and white.
When Sandy Hook students go back to school, it will be at the unused Chalk Hill School in nearby Monroe.
The rest of Newtown's schools reopened with grief counselors and police present, though it was unclear how many of the town's 4,700 students would attend.
Authorities said it could take months for them to finish their investigation, which was set back because Lanza smashed his computer's hard drive, preventing police from retrieving any data.
The massacre of young children shocked Americans who had grown accustomed to mass shootings, prompting some U.S. lawmakers to call for tighter gun restrictions.

Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.
All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.
The shooter, an adult, was dead and two handguns were recovered from the scene, NBC News reported without citing a source.
Danbury Hospital, about 18 kilometres west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: "They are very serious injuries."
A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud "booms" as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.
"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.
One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town's weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.
Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9:41 a.m., state police said.
An individual answering the phone at the Newtown Police Department declined to comment.
Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 70 km southwest of Hartford and 130 km northeast of New York City.
Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.
The United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall on Tuesday, killing two people and then himself.
The deadliest attack came in July at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

One student is in critical condition and another was seriously injured after a 12-year-old boy armed with a shotgun opened fire at a Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico on Tuesday (January 14), according to the governor and police.
According to reports, the shooting took place at around 8:00 a.m. inside the school gym as students were seated and waiting for the start of class, Governor Susana Martinez said.
One student said the unidentified 12-year-old boy bumped into her as he was made his way to the gym, apologizing to her when she scolded him for not being careful. Once inside the gym, the boy pulled out a shotgun he reportedly had concealed a inside a band instrument case and opened fire on one 11-year-old boy and one 13-year-old girl. Both were rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, with the boy in critical condition while the girl suffered serious injuries.
Officials said the 11-year-old boy was likely the suspect's intended target.
According to the student the suspect bumped into, the boy fired at the male victim's face twice, and fired once into the air before a teacher approached him and told him to put the weapon down.
One classmate said the suspect was being bullied at school. However, police have not determined a motive.
Reuters reports, "The shooting was the second to take place at a U.S. middle school in three months, after a 12-year-old boy opened fire at his middle school in Sparks, Nevada, in October, killing a teacher and wounding two students before killing himself.
"It comes amid a contentious national debate on gun control that intensified after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012. Following that attack, President Barack Obama called for sweeping new gun control measures."

Most of Sandy Hook is currently owned and managed by the National Park Service as the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.

Geologically, Sandy Hook is a large sand spit or barrier spit, the extension of a barrier peninsula along the coast of New Jersey, separated from the mainland by the estuary of the Shrewsbury River. On its western side, the peninsula encloses Sandy Hook Bay, a triangular arm of Raritan Bay. The 1,665-acre (6.74 km2) peninsula was discovered by Henry Hudson, and, historically, Sandy Hook has been a convenient anchorage for ships before proceeding into Upper New York Harbor.

"It was scary," she said about bringing her older child back to school. "I thought it was OK. He doesn't really understand what's going on. His main concern was that the shooter was dead." Ms. Selner said she reassured him by saying, "You're safe, we love you, your teacher loves you." She thought it was important to get back to a normal routine. "The longer you keep them out, the harder it is," said Ms. Selner. "They need routine. They can't see fear in us because it passes on to them." After dropping him off, she stopped in for breakfast at Bagel Delight with her youngest child. We presented information leading up to the hearing on the many questions Wolfgang Halbig has been trying to get officials to answer. We outlined how Wolfgang has forced these officials to finally answer some of the many questions that are so important to be concerned over not only on the condition of the school Sandy Hook Elementary but also on the response from the police and school division. Questions address today were. 1. Why all documentation was not presented on the supposed security system put in place by the school regarding the published letter from Mrs. Hochsprung apparently sent home to student on the new protocols for school security. 2. Where are the school boards documents regarding the children from the Sandy Hook Choir who attended the Super Bowl performance. Halbig presented the administration requires all outside activities should have been posted or filed of these children’s attendance. His request was put forward regarding the children’s names who attended. 3. Request was addressed on who was hired and contracted for the sanitation and clean-up of the school after the supposed incident. These contracts were not presented nor address to any extent. 4. Requests were made regarding who ordered and approved the placement of the port - o - potties on school property and what contractors were used and when those requested items were ordered. Also who had ordered the well-known electric street sign behind Gene Rosen asking people to report to the staging area. 5. They requested information on the Principles letters and emails and no response was really presented. 6. Requests were addressed regarding why the formal file was not provided by the Commissions office. 7. Detailed reports by police were addressed however fall far short on the request. As well the requested Dash Cam videos were not adequately provided. Addressed were also the fact the 911 calls were posted in reports as unwanted person and Threat level as Medium. Also who was in contact with coordinating State and Regional police and helicopter. They indicated no one and no communication between any of them. 8. Questions were addressed to the Janitor of Sandy Hook regarding school conditions being so adherent for the children to attend. In conclusion the hearing ended with the Commission saying they need to continue on another date as well Halbigs lawyer put in record problems with having subpoenaed individuals were not in attendance and failed to appear. According to reports, the shooting took place at around 8:00 a.m. inside the school gym as students were seated and waiting for the start of class, Governor Susana Martinez said. One student said the unidentified 12-year-old boy bumped into her as he was made his way to the gym, apologizing to her when she scolded him for not being careful. Once inside the gym, the boy pulled out a shotgun he reportedly had concealed a inside a band instrument case and opened fire on one 11-year-old boy and one 13-year-old girl. Both were rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, with the boy in critical condition while the girl suffered serious injuries. Officials said the 11-year-old boy was likely the suspect's intended target. According to the student the suspect bumped into, the boy fired at the male victim's face twice, and fired once into the air before a teacher approached him and told him to put the weapon down. One classmate said the suspect was being bullied at school. However, police have not determined a motive. Reuters reports, "The shooting was the second to take place at a U.S. middle school in three months, after a 12-year-old boy opened fire at his middle school in Sparks, Nevada, in October, killing a teacher and wounding two students before killing himself. More details about the gunman who turned a school day into carnage are slowly emerging. And under the cloud of national mourning, a renewed debate about gun control is heating up.
Investigators have so far been unable to retrieve data from a computer taken from the home of the gunman, Adam Lanza, a law enforcement official said Tuesday.
It appears that Lanza had smashed the computer, extensively damaging the hard drive, the official said, adding that the FBI is assisting Connecticut State Police in trying to retrieve data from the computer.
Lanza's mother was shot four times in the head while she slept in her bed, Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner H. Wayne Carver said Tuesday.
Adam Lanza killed himself with a shot to the front of his head from a handgun, the medical examiner said.
Toxicology tests are under way to determine whether Adam Lanza had taken medicines, Carver said.

While children from Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 students and six educators died in Friday's rampage, likely won't return until January, thousands of students from five other schools in the Newtown Public School District went back to class Tuesday morning. The schools opened with a two-hour delay and an increased security presence, with police officers at every building.
Thousands of students at schools in the Newtown Public School District went back on Tuesday, but children from Sandy Hook Elementary School won't return to classes until January.
One school, Head O'Meadow Elementary School, was slated to reopen but did not after a phone threat was made against the school. A district spokeswoman said the threat posed no real danger but students and staff were instructed to stay home "out of an abundance of caution," a spokeswoman said.
Students from Sandy Hook Elementary School will be moved to Chalk Hill School, a former middle school about seven miles away in Monroe. Officials said the classrooms will be set up just as they were at Sandy Hook.
Sue Selner, 44, brought her son to Reed Intermediate School, where a counseling center has also been established. He is in fifth grade and graduated from Sandy Hook Elementary last year. Her younger son, 4 years old, was slated to start kindergarten there next year.
"It was scary," she said about bringing her older child back to school. "I thought it was OK. He doesn't really understand what's going on. His main concern was that the shooter was dead."
Ms. Selner said she reassured him by saying, "You're safe, we love you, your teacher loves you." She thought it was important to get back to a normal routine.
"The longer you keep them out, the harder it is," said Ms. Selner. "They need routine. They can't see fear in us because it passes on to them."
After dropping him off, she stopped in for breakfast at Bagel Delight with her youngest child. She splurged on three cookies—one gingerbread, one Santa and one snowman—because the 4-year-old couldn't decide which he wanted most.
"I can't say no to anything right now," she said with a half-smile.

On April 24, 2015, we live streamed with our reporter SOS inside the hearing room from Hartford Ct. on the FOIA request, to finally face officials in regard to the Sandy Hook School questions.
Swan Song hosted the conversation along with Tony Mead, ZeeRoe3, Brian Roberts and UpNorthOfThe49th. We presented information leading up to the hearing on the many questions Wolfgang Halbig has been trying to get officials to answer.
We outlined how Wolfgang has forced these officials to finally answer some of the many questions that are so important to be concerned over not only on the condition of the school Sandy Hook Elementary but also on the response from the police and school division.
Questions address today were.
1. Why all documentation was not presented on the supposed security system put in place by the school regarding the published letter from Mrs. Hochsprung apparently sent home to student on the new protocols for school security.
2. Where are the school boards documents regarding the children from the Sandy Hook Choir who attended the Super Bowl performance. Halbig presented the administration requires all outside activities should have been posted or filed of these children’s attendance. His request was put forward regarding the children’s names who attended.
3. Request was addressed on who was hired and contracted for the sanitation and clean-up of the school after the supposed incident. These contracts were not presented nor address to any extent.
4. Requests were made regarding who ordered and approved the placement of the port - o - potties on school property and what contractors were used and when those requested items were ordered. Also who had ordered the well-known electric street sign behind Gene Rosen asking people to report to the staging area.
5. They requested information on the Principles letters and emails and no response was really presented.
6. Requests were addressed regarding why the formal file was not provided by the Commissions office.
7. Detailed reports by police were addressed however fall far short on the request. As well the requested Dash Cam videos were not adequately provided. Addressed were also the fact the 911 calls were posted in reports as unwanted person and Threat level as Medium. Also who was in contact with coordinating State and Regional police and helicopter. They indicated no one and no communication between any of them.
8. Questions were addressed to the Janitor of Sandy Hook regarding school conditions being so adherent for the children to attend.
In conclusion the hearing ended with the Commission saying they need to continue on another date as well Halbigs lawyer put in record problems with having subpoenaed individuals were not in attendance and failed to appear. So they need to press these individuals appear in a newly scheduled further hearing.

Students returned to school in the shattered Connecticut town of Newtown on Tuesday for the first time since a gunman's rampage killed 26 people in an elementary school.
At Hawley Elementary School, parents walked their children to the school door where they were greeted by a local police officer.

"Making the kids safe and happy. That's all we are here for is to make sure they are safe and happy."
Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20-year-old Adam Lanza gunned down a score of 6- and 7-year-olds and six adults on Friday, will remain closed.
It is an active crime scene, with police coming and going past a line of 26 Christmas trees, one for each victim, decorated with ornaments, stuffed animals and balloons in the school colors of green and white.
When Sandy Hook students go back to school, it will be at the unused Chalk Hill School in nearby Monroe.
The rest of Newtown's schools reopened with grief counselors and police present, though it was unclear how many of the town's 4,700 students would attend.
Authorities said it could take months for them to finish their investigation, which was set back because Lanza smashed his computer's hard drive, preventing police from retrieving any data.
The massacre of young children shocked Americans who had grown accustomed to mass shootings, prompting some U.S. lawmakers to call for tighter gun restrictions.

Danbury Hospital, about 18 kilometres west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: "They are very serious injuries."
A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud "booms" as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.
"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.

Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9:41 a.m., state police said.
An individual answering the phone at the Newtown Police Department declined to comment.
Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 70 km southwest of Hartford and 130 km northeast of New York City.
Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.

One student is in critical condition and another was seriously injured after a 12-year-old boy armed with a shotgun opened fire at a Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico on Tuesday (January 14), according to the governor and police.
According to reports, the shooting took place at around 8:00 a.m. inside the school gym as students were seated and waiting for the start of class, Governor Susana Martinez said.
One student said the unidentified 12-year-old boy bumped into her as he was made his way to the gym, apologizing to her when she scolded him for not being careful. Once inside the gym, the boy pulled out a shotgun he reportedly had concealed a inside a band instrument case and opened fire on one 11-year-old boy and one 13-year-old girl. Both were rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, with the boy in critical condition while the girl suffered serious injuries.
Officials said the 11-year-old boy was likely the suspect's intended target.
According to the student the suspect bumped into, the boy fired at the male victim's face twice, and fired once into the air before a teacher approached him and told him to put the weapon down.
One classmate said the suspect was being bullied at school. However, police have not determined a motive.
Reuters reports, "The shooting was the second to take place at a U.S. middle school in three months, after a 12-year-old boy opened fire at his middle school in Sparks, Nevada, in October, killing a teacher and wounding two students before killing himself.

One student is in critical condition and another was seriously injured after a 12-year-old boy armed with a shotgun opened fire at a Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico on Tuesday (January 14), according to the governor and police.
According to reports, the shooting took place at around 8:00 a.m. inside the school gym as students were seated and waiting for the start of class, Governor Susana Martinez said.
One student said the unidentified 12-year-old boy bumped into her as he was made his way to the gym, apologizing to her when she scolded him for not being careful. Once inside the gym, the boy pulled out a shotgun he reportedly had concealed a inside a band instrument case and opened fire on one 11-year-old boy and one 13-year-old girl. Both were rushed to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, with the boy in critical condition while the girl suffered serious injuries.
Officials said the 11-year-old boy was likely the suspect's intended target.
According to the student the suspect bumped into, the boy fired at the male victim's face twice, and fired once into the air before a teacher approached him and told him to put the weapon down.
One classmate said the suspect was being bullied at school. However, police have not determined a motive.
Reuters reports, "The shooting was the second to take place at a U.S. middle school in three months, after a 12-year-old boy opened fire at his middle school in Sparks, Nevada, in October, killing a teacher and wounding two students before killing himself.
