The wolverine, pictured above, was known by conservationists as M56. The picture is from Jared Hatter’s personal Facebook page, which you can visit here. Jared shot, killed, and then posed with the rare animal so he could brag about it on social media. Until this killing, a wolverine sighting hadn’t been confirmed in North Dakota since the 1800s. Jared claims the wolverine was harassing cattle, thus justifying the murder in the eyes of the state.

Before his premature and needless death, M56 was known around the country for his over-500-mile journey from Wyoming to Colorado in 2009, which was tracked through his radio collar by wildlife authorities. His collar stopped transmitting in 2012, and four years later he was killed by Jared, around 700 miles from his last known location.

American wolverines are critically endangered in the United States. From the Center for Biological Diversity:

Unfortunately, in the contiguous United States, this tough scavenger-predator is barely holding on. Trapping and habitat loss have been dramatically shrinking its populations for more than a century, and now it’s faced with new human threats like snowmobiles tearing through its habitat and, worse, global warming threatening the deep snow it relies on for life activities from traveling to denning and raising kits. . . . Yet the federal government repeatedly refused to protect the wolverine, first denying proof of its peril in the lower 48 states and then declaring that, while the animal may be imperiled here, it doesn’t need to be listed under the Endangered Species Act because wolverine populations in Canada are still stable. Like many other species, from the cactus ferruginous pygmy owl to the Mexican garter snake, the American wolverine has been denied the protection it needs simply because its peers across the border are more widespread.

There has been public outcry against the killing of M56, especially since there are so few American wolverines left, and a sighting in any state is a rare thing. Of course, ranchers and other eco-terrorists have been mocking those who wish to preserve the wilderness that Jared and his kin pretend to treasure. Speaking of treasure, scrolling through Jared’s Facebook wall I found this gem:

Jared’s Facebook, one more time, before he takes it down.

  1. These idiots will continue unless there are serious consequences. Since wildlife policy and the culling/killing/hunting are determined by ranchers, hunters, gun manufacturers, and outdoor sports equipment suppliers. There will be little will to stop at from state wildlife departments since they make money from hunting licenses. Those of us who love the wilderness and wildlife cannot compete with the wealthy power players. So sad and frustrating. Sorry for that wolverine. He should have been left to continue his life

I live in North Dakota. The attitude here is shoot first, brag, brag some more about being a manly man, even if you shot a rat.
There are responsible farmers, the older men and women that might have recognized the importance of this discover. However here is the usual dialog…if that bald eagle steals one more cat I will shoot it….oh not enough geese let’s den all the fox cubs…..help help coyots are killing my cattle get beer round up the boys and kill 30 a piece. In this little box called North Dakota there are 2 things that start with the letter C the majority of the public do not understand-
    Commen Sense & Constitution.

  3. Coward, afraid of people so he limited posting on his page. It is hard being an idiot in this world.

It’s time to give wildlife back their land and forego a few hamburgers.

What a gross human being. He needs a bout of public shaming.

False I’ve lived in williston all my life in 1999 there was two in the legion park aka rifle range in McKenzie county by indian hill so this us false article and yes if its chasing my livly hood I’d kill it too

    • Dasein says:

      Dawn Dunn,

So you “heard” there were two wolverines in your area (over a decade ago), so your reasoning is that it’s ok to shoot them if you deem them a threat? There is absolutely no mature or adult reasoning to your statement.

If the mindset here is that it’s ok to kill anything that I deem a threat to “my livelihood”, what does that say about folks like you who are a threat to the life and well-being of the greater community of life? Obviously not a very well thought out defense of Jared’s actions, at all. The selfishness and ignorance you display does nothing to boost your image as a tough rancher, or whatever you are. My grandfather raised livestock, and I’ve spent plenty of time with hunters, ranchers, and people who live off the land, and your ignorance and insensitivity would put their hard work and generations of wisdom and sensibility to shame. Maybe it’s time to reconsider whether you have an unbalanced sense of entitlement…

THIS JARED HATTER must now think he’s a “real macho man” along with the others who agree with him.

Jared Hater’s page wouldn’t let me comment beyond an emoticon, so I’ll comment here. Another good reason to give up beef. Maybe we can take away the “livly hood” of all those good ole boys; beef is bad for you, bad for the environment and terrible for wildlife. The cattle don’t do so well, either.

Looks like these cowpokes are also into rodeos. So, a good reason to donate to ShARK, too.

  12. Differences occur in animals; only wild, native species, scientifically, biodiversity and bio means life, are the very animals that create, support and sustain planet Earth, the very Earth that generates and flows every lifeline mankind possesses for life itself. The wolverine is not only biodiversity, but our native predators are some of the most vital and necessary species on Earth. A scientist: “Predators in natural abundance play a critical role in maintaining healthy, functioning ecosystems/planet Earth. Targeting them only causes these highly social animals suffering and stress and — erodes the fabric of interconnectedness that supports all life.” Science also states, the extinctions of biodiversity, like the wolverine, are as safe for mankind and planet Earth as global, thermonuclear war. Dr. E.O. Wilson states, the extinctions of biodiversity are more a grave threat to mankind and planet Earth than climate change. When we conserve and protect biodiversity, we are conserving and protecting planet Earth, mankind’s only home.

WOW… IF THEY WERE KEEPING TRACK OF THIS GUY…. THEN WHY DIDN’T THE PUPLIC KNOW ABOUT THIS. WHY DID THE “CONSERVATIONIST GROUP” THAT, WAS TRACKING HIM. MAKE SURE HIS TRACKING COLLAR WAS IN WORKING ORDER OR DID THEY JUST SLAP THE COLLAR ON HIM N TURN HIM LOOSE. WAS IT JUST TO GET FUNDS FOR A PROGRAM THAT WAS EVIDENTLY POORLY MANAGED…. THE PUPLIC NEEDS TO BE NOTIFIED, WHEN SUCH A DANGEROUS ANIMAL IS IN OUR BACKYARDS. ALOT OF US DON’T LIVE RIGHT IN TOWN/ CITIES.. THEREFORE, WE HAVE WOODS N FIELDS N PASTURES FOR MILES N HAVE LIVESTOCK, HERDS OF HORSES, DOGS THAT PROTECT OUR PROPERTY N SMALL CHILDREN N GRANDCHILDREN THAT RUN N PLAY. WITH ALL THAT WE ALSO HAVE ” DEER, N COYOTES N MOUNTAIN LIONS N OTHER ANIMALS THAT, THE WOLVERINE IS IN CONSTANT COMPETION WITH.

  14. That compassionless turd also kills wolves…
