Lewis Smith

Lewis Smith (born August 1, 1956) is an American actor.

Early life

Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated from Lookout Valley High School in 1974.

Career

Smith is best known for the role of Charles Main on the first and second part of North and South miniseries, He also played "Curly Bill" Brocious in the Kevin Costner film Wyatt Earp. Smith co-starred as Perfect Tommy in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension and as trigger-happy National Guardsman "Earl Stuckey" in Walter Hill's Southern Comfort (1981).

Smith starred as Bobby Fantana in 1985's The Heavenly Kid. In 1987, he played the title role in the failed television pilot The Man Who Fell to Earth which was based on the David Bowie film from the 1970s. Smith landed a starring role in the short-lived Fox comedy television series Karen's Song. He also co-starred with Sharon Stone and Miguel Ferrer in Badlands 2005, an unsold TV pilot-movie directed by Scottish-born George Miller (not to be confused with the other George Miller who directed the Mad Max movies). He appeared as slave fight trainer "Jinglebells Cody" in Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained.

Lewis Smith (cricketer)

Lewis Alfred Smith was an English cricketer active from 1934 to 1947 who played for Middlesex and Northamptonshire (Northants). He was born in Brentford on 12 July 1913 and died in Ealing on 10 September 1978. He appeared in five first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowled right arm fast medium. He scored 92 runs with a highest score of 55 and took eleven wickets with a best performance of four for 55.

Lewis (lifting appliance)

A lewis (sometimes called a lewisson) is one of a category of lifting devices used by stonemasons to lift large stones into place with a crane, chain block, or winch. It is inserted into a specially prepared hole, or seating, in the top of a stone, directly above its centre of mass. It works by applying principles of the lever and utilises the weight of the stone to act on the long lever-arms which in turn results in a very high reaction force and friction where the short lever-arms make contact with the stone inside the hole and thereby prevents slipping.

Etymology

The name lewis may come from the Latin levo -avi, -atum meaning to levitate or lift, but the Oxford English Dictionary Online states, "the formation and the phonology are not easily explained on this hypothesis", preferring "origin obscure", and speculating that the term may derive from a personal name. The Romans used the lewis. The specially shaped hole that is shaped to fit the device is known as a lewis hole. Lewis holes in the uppermost masonry coursings are neatly repaired with matching indented plugs after the stone has been set in place.

Lewis (crater)

Lewis is a crater on the far side of the Moon. It lies along the western edge of the Montes Cordillera mountains that surround the Mare Orientale impact basin. This crater has been heavily disrupted by the formation of the basin, and it is covered by ejecta from the impact leaving only an uneven depression in the surface. The outer rim is roughly circular, and the interior is uneven.
