Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Syria War 2016 - Heavy Clashes As Kurdish YPG And Syrian Government Troops Battle Over Al-Qamishli.
Heavy clashes occured recently as Kurdish YPG units together with FSA rebels started heavy fighting and firefights with Syrian government troops from the National Defense Force (NDF) over the control of the northern Syrian town of Qamishli.
The footage shows Kurdish YPG fighters in heavy urban combat in the town that mostly was untouched by the raging Syrian Civil War.
A main battlefield durign the short battle of Al-Qamishli was the Allya prison that was overtaken by Syrian government forces and led to the erruption of the clashes between Kurdish YPG fighters and National Defense Forces.
The battle was won by the Kurds leading to the capturing of at least 50 Syrian government loyalist. About 21 NDF fighters were also KIA.
The Syrian Army shelled Kurdish positions in northern Syria with artillery and mortar fire as a response to the battle.
However after the intervention of a Russian special delegation sent by Vladimir Putin to Qamishlo a truce has been reached between the Kurdish Forces and the forces loyal to Bashar Assad in which the NDF agreed to pull out of the city and leave the security measures to the Kurdish Asayish and YPG forces.
That prevented further escalations between Kurdish militia groups and the Syrian government.

Russia is bombing rebel-held areas in Syria at a furious pace. That is giving the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the upper hand. Meanwhile, critics accuse the United States of dithering.
The war, approaching its sixth year, may be reaching a turning point in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial capital. Government-aligned forces are trying to encircle its eastern half, controlled by rebels since 2012. If the government succeeds, it would be the greatest blow to the opposition in years.
But the battlefield is unpredictable. If the government regains full control of Aleppo, will the war begin to wind down, or will it escalate?
Backed by the Russian airstrikes, Syrian government forces and Iran-backed militias are trying to besiege the rebel-held section of Aleppo to starve the rebels into submission — the same method government forces used to recapture another major city, Homs. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime, but it has been widely used in the Syrian war.
Government-aligned forces have also severed the main supply route to Turkey that delivered food, weapons and aid to rebel-held areas, leaving one remaining route.
The United Nations is warning that about 300,000 people in the rebel-held part of Aleppo could be at risk of starvation.
The Syrian government has also succeeded in turning humanitarian aid — food — into a negotiating chit. In talks to end the fighting among world powers on Thursday, allowing food deliveries was offered as a government concession.
According to an analysis by the Carter Center of the population centers each faction controls, the government has about 40 percent of the country, while the Kurdish groups, the Islamic State and other insurgent groups each hold about 20 percent.
The rebel groups that the West considers relatively moderate are strongest around Aleppo. But they are intertwined in places with the Nusra Front, which is linked to Al Qaeda and which the United States and Russia both consider a terrorist group. The deal reached in Munich, for a “cessation of hostilities,” leading to a cease-fire, excludes the Nusra Front and Islamic State.
The rest of Aleppo Province is a patchwork of zones of control. Kurds have the area around Afrin in the northwest, Islamic State holds the east, the government and its allies have advanced in the south, and other insurgent groups hold the west.

The footage shows Kurdish YPG fighters in heavy urban combat in the town that mostly was untouched by the raging Syrian Civil War.
A main battlefield durign the short battle of Al-Qamishli was the Allya prison that was overtaken by Syrian government forces and led to the erruption of the clashes between Kurdish YPG fighters and National Defense Forces.
The battle was won by the Kurds leading to the capturing of at least 50 Syrian government loyalist. About 21 NDF fighters were also KIA.
The Syrian Army shelled Kurdish positions in northern Syria with artillery and mortar fire as a response to the battle.
However after the intervention of a Russian special delegation sent by Vladimir Putin to Qamishlo a truce has been reached between the Kurdish Forces and the forces loyal to Bashar Assad in which the NDF agreed to pull out of the city and leave the security measures to the Kurdish Asayish and YPG forces.
That prevented further escalations between Kurdish militia groups and the Syrian government.

Russia is bombing rebel-held areas in Syria at a furious pace. That is giving the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the upper hand. Meanwhile, critics accuse the United States of dithering.
The war, approaching its sixth year, may be reaching a turning point in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial capital. Government-aligned forces are trying to encircle its eastern half, controlled by rebels since 2012. If the government succeeds, it would be the greatest blow to the opposition in years.
But the battlefield is unpredictable. If the government regains full control of Aleppo, will the war begin to wind down, or will it escalate?
Backed by the Russian airstrikes, Syrian government forces and Iran-backed militias are trying to besiege the rebel-held section of Aleppo to starve the rebels into submission — the same method government forces used to recapture another major city, Homs. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime, but it has been widely used in the Syrian war.
Government-aligned forces have also severed the main supply route to Turkey that delivered food, weapons and aid to rebel-held areas, leaving one remaining route.
The United Nations is warning that about 300,000 people in the rebel-held part of Aleppo could be at risk of starvation.
The Syrian government has also succeeded in turning humanitarian aid — food — into a negotiating chit. In talks to end the fighting among world powers on Thursday, allowing food deliveries was offered as a government concession.
According to an analysis by the Carter Center of the population centers each faction controls, the government has about 40 percent of the country, while the Kurdish groups, the Islamic State and other insurgent groups each hold about 20 percent.
The rebel groups that the West considers relatively moderate are strongest around Aleppo. But they are intertwined in places with the Nusra Front, which is linked to Al Qaeda and which the United States and Russia both consider a terrorist group. The deal reached in Munich, for a “cessation of hostilities,” leading to a cease-fire, excludes the Nusra Front and Islamic State.
The rest of Aleppo Province is a patchwork of zones of control. Kurds have the area around Afrin in the northwest, Islamic State holds the east, the government and its allies have advanced in the south, and other insurgent groups hold the west.

Russia is bombing rebel-held areas in Syria at a furious pace. That is giving the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the upper hand. Meanwhile, critics accuse the United States of dithering.
The war, approaching its sixth year, may be reaching a turning point in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial capital. Government-aligned forces are trying to encircle its eastern half, controlled by rebels since 2012. If the government succeeds, it would be the greatest blow to the opposition in years.
But the battlefield is unpredictable. If the government regains full control of Aleppo, will the war begin to wind down, or will it escalate?
Backed by the Russian airstrikes, Syrian government forces and Iran-backed militias are trying to besiege the rebel-held section of Aleppo to starve the rebels into submission — the same method government forces used to recapture another major city, Homs. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime, but it has been widely used in the Syrian war.
Government-aligned forces have also severed the main supply route to Turkey that delivered food, weapons and aid to rebel-held areas, leaving one remaining route.
The United Nations is warning that about 300,000 people in the rebel-held part of Aleppo could be at risk of starvation.
The Syrian government has also succeeded in turning humanitarian aid — food — into a negotiating chit. In talks to end the fighting among world powers on Thursday, allowing food deliveries was offered as a government concession.
According to an analysis by the Carter Center of the population centers each faction controls, the government has about 40 percent of the country, while the Kurdish groups, the Islamic State and other insurgent groups each hold about 20 percent.
The rebel groups that the West considers relatively moderate are strongest around Aleppo. But they are intertwined in places with the Nusra Front, which is linked to Al Qaeda and which the United States and Russia both consider a terrorist group. The deal reached in Munich, for a “cessation of hostilities,” leading to a cease-fire, excludes the Nusra Front and Islamic State.
The rest of Aleppo Province is a patchwork of zones of control. Kurds have the area around Afrin in the northwest, Islamic State holds the east, the government and its allies have advanced in the south, and other insurgent groups hold the west.

The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, gave his reaction to the vote:
"Together the world with a single voice for the first time is imposing a binding obligation on the Assad regime requiring it to get rid of weapons that have been used to devastating effect as tools of terror."
The US and other nations have blamed the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack in Damascus on August 21 in which hundreds died.
Speaking after the vote the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said that the resolution "reaffirms the agreement reached at the meeting of the US and Russia in Geneva regarding the use of chemical weapons by any side. It will have to be carefully investigated by the UN Security Council, which would be ready to take action under Chapter 7."

The 15-member UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution that demands the eradication of Syria's chemical weapons. Experts must be given unlimited access.
The deal breaks a two-and-a-half year deadlock over the crisis and does not threaten automatic punitive action against the government of Bashar al-Assad if it does not comply. The country would, however, face "consequences".
The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, gave his reaction to the vote:
"Together the world with a single voice for the first time is imposing a binding obligation on the Assad regime requiring it to get rid of weapons that have been used to devastating effect as tools of terror."
The US and other nations have blamed the Syrian government for a chemical weapons attack in Damascus on August 21 in which hundreds died.
Speaking after the vote the Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said that the resolution "reaffirms the agreement reached at the meeting of the US and Russia in Geneva regarding the use of chemical weapons by any side. It will have to be carefully investigated by the UN Security Council, which would be ready to take action under Chapter 7."

STORYLINE:
On October 12th 2012 a strong Turkish military presence was in place along the country's volatile border with Syria.
Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said a plane intercepted on its way from Moscow to Damascus was carrying military equipment and ammunition to Syria.
Erdogan said the cargo seized by Turkish authorities late on Wednesday was destined for the Syrian military.
Syria has denied that the Syrian Air Airbus A320 was carrying an illicit cargo.
The incident inflamed already-heightened tension between the two neighbours.
Turkey and Syria, which were once close allies, have been exchanging artillery fire across the 910-kilometre (565 mile) border for days.
Nearly 100,000 Syrian refugees are being housed in Turkey, according to Turkey's prime minister.

Historic buildings in the ancient city of Aleppo, Syria sustained terrible damage due to the intensity of fighting between the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the forces of Bashar Assad's regime.
Footage from the city, shot on October 12th, shows buildings reduced to rubble and streets lined with debris following weeks of indiscriminate bombardment by tanks and helicopters.

he UN Security Council has voted unanimously to secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons stockpile.
The vote late on Friday was the first resolution passed on the Syrian conflict since it began in March 2011, after Russia and China had previously vetoed three Western-backed resolutions pressuring President Bashar Assad's regime to end the violence.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the council immediately after the vote he aimed for a Syria peace conference in November.
"Today's historic resolution is the first hopeful news on Syria in a long time," Ban said.
Bashar Ja'afari, Syria's ammbassador to the UN, said the regime was "fully committed" to attending the proposed peace conference.
Ja'afari said the resolution covered most of the concerns of Damascus and that the countries supporting rebels - Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, France and the US - should also abide by it.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' (OPCW) in The Hague, the world's chemical weapons watchdog, had earlier approved the disarmament plan for Syria that paved the way for the UN vote.
For the first time, the council endorsed the roadmap for a political transition in Syria adopted by key nations in June 2012 and called for an international conference to be convened "as soon as possible'' to implement it.
The resolution calls for consequences if Syria fails to comply, but those will depend on the council passing another resolution in the event of non-compliance.
Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, said after the vote the UN Security Council would be prepared to take punitive steps in the event of confirmed violations of a resolution demanding the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.
"The United Nations Security Council ... will stand ready to take action under Chapter VII of the charter, quite
clearly," Lavrov said, in reference to the part of the UN charter covering the council's power to enforce its decisions with sanctions or military force.
However, James Bays, Al Jazeera's diplomatic editor, said it was significant that Lavrov had pointed out that the resolution passed in the UN did not threaten the use of force.
"It would trigger another resolution that would threaten the use of force," Bays said.
Syria pledge
US Secretary of State John Kerry said that Syria would face punishment if it failed to comply, but he hailed the landmark vote.
"The Security Council has shown that when we put aside politics for the common good, we are still capable of doing big things," Kerry said.
"Provided this resolution is fully implemented, we will have eliminated one of the largest chemical weapons programs on Earth from one of the most volatile places on Earth."
Bays said the vote paved the way for the start of the work for the chemical weapons inspectors.
"The big question then is whether Syria will comply," he said.
Bays earlier put the point to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem.
"We will commit because we are determined to go forward in the respect of [the agreement of] destroying the chemical weapons," Muallem told Bays at the UN headquarters in New York.
OPCW spokesman Luhan said that a there was a "very minor change" to a draft document seen by AFP news agency and "the timetable was not disturbed."
The draft OPCW document said the watchdog would start inspections no later than October 1 and eliminate all of Syria's chemical weapons by mid-2014.

It borders Saudi Arabia to the east and south-east, Iraq to the east, Syria to the north and West Bank and Israel to the west, sharing control of the Dead Sea. Jordans only port is at its southern tip, at the Gulf of Aqaba, which is shared with Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Much of Jordan is covered by the Arabian Desert. Cultures further west also left their mark, such as the Macedonian/Greek/Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires. Since the seventh century, the area has been under the primary rule of Muslim and Arab cultures, with the exceptions briefly for the area in Western Jordan during the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, and for the entire region during the early-mid twentieth century under British rule which led to Jordans establishment as an autonomous state.
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a constitutional monarchy with representative government. The reigning monarch is the chief executive and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. On 22 June the head of UN human rights investigation, Paulo Pinheiro, said the UN could not determine who used chemical weapons in Syria after the evidence had been delivered by the United States, Britain and France. However, the commission reported that there were "reasonable grounds to believe that chemical agents have been used as weapons".
A chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government in the Zamalka district of Damascus was reported by the Syrian Support Group on 24 June 2013.
On 9 July the Russian ambassador to UN state that Russian experts have determined that Syrian rebels used sarin nerve gas outside Aleppo in March and presented the evidence they have collected. The United States White house Spokesmen, Jay Carney, told reporters at a press conference that they have yet to find evidence that backs up the assertion that anyone besides the Syrian government has had the ability to use chemical weapons or has used chemical weapons.
On 5 August, another chemical attack by the Syrian army was reported by the opposition, who documented the injured with video footage. The activists claim up to 400 people were effected by the attack in Adra and Houma of the Damascus suburbs. The content of the chemicals used has not been identified yet.
On 21 August, Syrian activists reported that Assad regime forces struck Jobar, Zamalka, 'Ain Tirma, and Hazzah in the Eastern Ghouta region with chemical weapons. At least 635 people were killed in a nerve gas attack. Unverified videos uploaded showed the victims, many of who were convulsing, as well as several dozen bodies lined up. Experts in chemical weapons stated that the footage showed signs that a nerve agent may have been used. Early sources reported a figure of 213 in a poisonous gas attack. The SNC chief said that the overall death toll stood at an estimated 1300, as only a fraction of the bodies could be collected and many died within their own homes. The Syrian government initially prevented United Nations investigators from reaching the sites of the attacks, despite their accommodations being only a few kilometers away. On 25 August, the Syrian government agreed to allow UN investigators to visit the site of the attacks. The UN inspectors arrived to the site of the attacks, despite being fired upon by an unknown party while underway. UN officials say that inspectors have gathered "valuable" evidence. On 26 August the inspectors reached some sites, but after an hour and a half, were ordered by the Syrian government to return due to 'safety concerns', and the inspectors could not reach the six main sites.

Experts in chemical weapons stated that the footage showed signs that a nerve agent may have been used. Early sources reported a figure of 213 in a poisonous gas attack. The SNC chief said that the overall death toll stood at an estimated 1300, as only a fraction of the bodies could be collected and many died within their own homes. The Syrian government initially prevented United Nations investigators from reaching the sites of the attacks, despite their accommodations being only a few kilometers away. On 25 August, the Syrian government agreed to allow UN investigators to visit the site of the attacks. The UN inspectors arrived to the site of the attacks, despite being fired upon by an unknown party while underway. UN officials say that inspectors have gathered "valuable" evidence. On 26 August the inspectors reached some sites, but after an hour and a half, were ordered by the Syrian government to return due to 'safety concerns', and the inspectors could not reach the six main sites.

Syria is demanding the UN take action after it says French war planes killed more than 120 civilians during airstrikes on Tuesday near the Turkish-Syrian border. The deaths came just a day after US air assaults killed a further 20 people in Manbij.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry sent letters to the UN secretary general and to the president of the UN Security Council, which at present is Japan.
Damascus wants the organization to look into atrocities committed by France, which is a member of the US-led international coalition, after it targeted the village of Toukhan Al-Kubra, located near the Turkish-Syrian border and the city of Manbij.
“The French unjust aggression claimed the lives of more than 120 civilians, most of them are children, women and elderly, in addition to tens of wounded citizens, the majority of them are also children and women as reports say that the fate of scores of other civilians who still under debris are unknown too,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry wrote, as cited by the
The mass death toll in Toukhan Al-Kubra came just a day after US war planes killed around 20 people, mainly women and children, while many more were injured in and around the city of Manbij, the Foreign Ministry states.
“The government of the Syrian Arab Republic condemns, with the strongest terms, the two bloody massacres perpetrated by the French and US warplanes and those affiliated to the so-called international coalition which send their missiles and bombs to the civilians instead of directing them to the terrorist gangs… Syria also affirms that those who want to combat terrorism seriously should coordinate with the Syrian government and army,” the ministry added.
In the letter, the Syrian Foreign Ministry added that it condemns the continued support by the US, France, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Qatar to terrorist organizations such as Al-Nusra Front and Jaish Al-Islam, despite these groups having clear links to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Qaeda
The human rights watchdog Amnesty International also hit out at the US-led coalition, saying that it needs to do more to prevent the deaths of civilians.
“Anyone responsible for violations of international humanitarian law must be brought to justice and victims and their families should receive full reparation,” Amnesty’s interim Middle East director Magdalena Mughrabi said, as cited by Reuters.
A spokesman for the US Department of Defense says that it is aware of the loss of civilian life in Syria.
“We are aware of reports alleging civilian casualties near Manbij, Syria, recently. As with any allegation we receive, we will review any information we have about the incident,” Matthew Allen said in a statement.
“We take all measures during the targeting process to avoid or minimize civilian casualties or collateral damage and to comply with the principles of the Law of Armed Conflict,” he added.

The video captures Nour al-Din al-Zenki fighters in the back of a truck with a child they claim is an al-Quds soldier supporting Assad's Syrian forces.
One of the fighters shouts 'Allahu Akbar' meaning 'God is great' after taking a small knife to the boy's throat and cutting off his head in the Palesinian refugee Handarat Camp in Northern Aleppo.
The child, who is clearly under the age of 12, was arrested by the Islamist militants for allegedly being Palestinian Liwaa Al Quds, al-Quds Brigade fighter, according to Russia News Now.
Sickening footage shot immediately before the boy is slaughtered shows him in ragged clothes surrounded by bearded militants in the back of a pick-up truck.
One of them holds him by the hair and slaps him in the face.
Judging by his ragged clothes and the marks on his arms, it appears the boy was impoverished and may have been tortured before he was murdered in the video, seen by MailOnline.
The boy is placed face-down in the back of the truck with his arms tied behind his back when the executioner is handed a small knife by a fellow fighter.
He then cuts the boy's throat before shouting 'Allahu Akbar' and holds his head aloft.
Before the video ends, he places the head on the boy's back before jumping down from the SUV.
Liwaa Al Quds is a pro-Syrian government Palestinian paramilitary faction made up of the Palestinians who have been driven out of their homes in the Handarat Camp once Islamist militants took over the neighbourhood.
Today, the group is fighting alongside the Syrian Army to retake the camp.
Nour al-Din al-Zenki is part of the Levant Front, and its allies the Islamic Front and the Free Syrian Army are fighting to overthrow the Assad regime.
It is also battling ISIS and the U.S government supplied the group with money and anti-tank missiles.
