A video showing my shitty teaching stint at the Geng Dan campus of the Beijing University of Technology
(北京工业大学耿丹学院).
Geng Dan College is a Tier-3 school, meaning if you didn't get into any good schools, and the not so good ones didn't take you either, you came here, didn't study, and somehow got a diploma anyway.
For the first month or so I thought the students were just "warming up" to me. But afterwards it becamse apparent that they did no work in any of the English classes, and that the whole university is more than less a joke. Cheating during exams was rife, and there are no consequences for whatever behaviour the "students" engage in.
The place is a sham, it is a diploma mill, no one studies there, and it was just a tremendous waste of time being there. The only consolation is that it allowed me to see a lot of China which I still believe is an AMAZING country and everyone should visit.
But the school BLOWS!

Some people replied to this video mentioning "youthful rebellion" and the like. The rebellion argument cannot stand. If someone is interested in rebelling, please leave the classroom. That's it.
I started the course with textbooks I was given by the dean. They are actually an advanced coursebook, and the dean assured me that their English comprehension level is sufficient. That turned out to be less than true half the time, and is a failure of the school to effectively administer tests and determine who can be in which level.
A few weeks into the semester, after not having any sort of response from the students, I dropped the textbooks and started introducing more general and easier topics. eg.: "would you like an exciting or boring job? why?" No response, even when led into it. I would give them word lists and ask them to use the words to explain their stance. Nothing. Literally , no response.
I tried role playing. So in a lesson about "what makes a good policeman", I had one student act as a cop, and another as a robber. They did nothing. Didn't want to talk. Didn't want to do anything. After class the students went to the dean and told her that my classes are boring (huh!?!?!?!?! acting out robber and cop is boring? that's a full opportunity for laughs and jokes...) AND some said that I was crazy because "why are we learning about robbers"?
They are spoiled little rich kids, not adults. They expect to be entertained, not trained. They want fun, no work. Jesus Christ, I cannot express that enough.
After that we started watching movies. James Bond, Bourne Identity, Lord of War. Typical fun stuff for Chinese boys and girls. Guns and action. The movies were a great hit, UNTIL I asked them to tell me "what does so and so do?" "who is this?' "who is that?". Silence.
Movie worksheet? Wouldnt even read it after I filled in the blanks.
So I just decided to go with the original diagnosis that I am dealing with lazy stupid children. I didnt sign up for special education, I signed up for university teaching.
The University charges parents money. Everyone who pays - passes. I heard this really stupid opinion MANY times in China: "a good university has no failures, because they have good teachers who do their job right". True in a perfect world. In reality, many schools in China stop failing students because they want their enrollment to go up. This is one of the stupidest processes I have ever heard of my life. Education is no longer education.
In fact, Chinese teachers at the English Dept wouldnt fail students AT ANY POINT, because the dean would come down hard on them for being "bad teachers". That's not at all entertaining the possibility that the students are not doing their part.
A good university motivates the students by grading, and tests them to make sure they are performing well. At Geng Dan, neither were there, as no matter what the students did, they got the diploma.
Please do go to my Back to China (Part 8) video, in there in about middle of the vid you will find scenes from a different school, the Heng Shui Highschool where I spent 2002 and 2003. Totally different experience, and it is a HIGHSCHOOL! Everyone is interested in learning, asking/answering questions, repeating answers, doing work, and having fun.
That "university" is one of those things that have to be seen and experienced to be believed.

My 6 months "teaching" in China was spent here. This is the Geng Dan College of the Beijing University of Technology
(北京工业大学耿丹学院). I am not sure how I was teaching, because no one did any learning. All the students at this "university" were preoccupied with smoking, drinking, video games, mobile phones, and MP3 players, and acted like total vegetables in all English classes (not just mine).
Its a school where the rich folk send their spoiled little kids to pretend that they are getting an education.
Stupid.

Third (and final) part of the wonderful teaching experience at the Geng Dan College (full Chinese name: 北京工业大学耿丹学院). Eventually I got pissed off with the school not being a school but a mere diploma mill, bought a flight tiket, and left.
The 6 months [not working] here did allow me to see a huge chunk of China, but I am still unable to wrap my head around how insanely lazy and spoiled my students were.
It was a very interesting experience, but totally unnecessary.

Follow me on a tour of the beautiful Beijing (or "Peking" as some still refer to it) University campus. Every Chinese student knows our Yale and Harvard Universities, but Beijing University has a great tradition and marks the intellectual center of the universe for classical Chinese culture and education. This campus evokes all that we imagine is "The East." What struck me was how many US, Australian and other nationalities were represented in the student body. If I were an aspiring college student again, here at the dawn of the 21st century, Beijing University would be on my list of top universities.

Yunnan Normal University is located in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province. Established in 1938 as the National Normal College of Southwestern Union University based on Beijing University, Tsinghua University, and Nankai University, it was named as National Kunming Normal College in 1946 when the faculties returned to the north. Yunnan Normal University (henceforth YNNU) is a key university of Yunnan Province, with a long history and a great tradition. It is a higher institution co-funded by the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Government of Yunnan and one of the one hundred universities funded by the National Key Project for the Quality Enhancement of the Higher Institutions in Central and West China.
After the Anti-Japanese War broke out in 1937, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University moved to Kunming and merged into the National Southwest Associated University, which consisted of School of Humanities, School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Business and Law, and the Teachers College. Following the end of the War, the three component universities moved back to their original sites in the north, but the Teachers College, renamed National Kunming Teachers College, stayed behind to become an independent institution. In 1950, the word “National” was dropped from its name. A few decades later, in 1984, it acquired its present name, Yunnan Normal University. As the Provincial Center of the Data Resources of Chinese Higher Education, YNNU’s library houses more than 3.2 million books with a new-generation digitized service system. This vid was embedded at 6park.com where someone played it down as a cultural difference. There is no cultural difference here, just lazy and spoiled students... A video showing my shitty teaching stint at the Geng Dan campus of the Beijing University of Technology (北京工业大学耿丹学院). Geng Dan College is a Tier-3 school, meaning if you didn't get into any good schools, and the not so good ones didn't take you either, you came here, didn't study, and somehow got a diploma anyway. For the first month or so I thought the students were just "warming up" to me. But afterwards it becamse apparent that they did no work in any of the English classes, and that the whole university is more than less a joke. Cheating during exams was rife, and there are no consequences for whatever behaviour the "students" engage in. The place is a sham, it is a diploma mill, no one studies there, and it was just a tremendous waste of time being there. The only consolation is that it allowed me to see a lot of China which I still believe is an AMAZING country and everyone should visit. But the school BLOWS! Part 1 of 3 This video is just some random class footage glued together to more than less tell a story and show a glimpse of what it was like. In reality, it is one of those things you had to see to believe. MORE DETAIL Hi hi! Obviously you care more than the average viewer because you are reading... So here is some more detail. Some people replied to this video mentioning "youthful rebellion" and the like. The rebellion argument cannot stand. If someone is interested in rebelling, please leave the classroom. That's it. I started the course with textbooks I was given by the dean. They are actually an advanced coursebook, and the dean assured me that their English comprehension level is sufficient. That turned out to be less than true half the time, and is a failure of the school to effectively administer tests and determine who can be in which level. A few weeks into the semester, after not having any sort of response from the students, I dropped the textbooks and started introducing more general and easier topics. eg.: "would you like an exciting or boring job? why?" No response, even when led into it. I would give them word lists and ask them to use the words to explain their stance. Nothing. Literally , no response. I tried role playing. So in a lesson about "what makes a good policeman", I had one student act as a cop, and another as a robber. They did nothing. Didn't want to talk. Didn't want to do anything. After class the students went to the dean and told her that my classes are boring (huh!?!?!?!?! acting out robber and cop is boring? that's a full opportunity for laughs and jokes...) AND some said that I was crazy because "why are we learning about robbers"? They are spoiled little rich kids, not adults. They expect to be entertained, not trained. They want fun, no work. Jesus Christ, I cannot express that enough. After that we started watching movies. James Bond, Bourne Identity, Lord of War. Typical fun stuff for Chinese boys and girls. Guns and action. The movies were a great hit, UNTIL I asked them to tell me "what does so and so do?" "who is this?' "who is that?". Silence. Movie worksheet? Wouldnt even read it after I filled in the blanks. So I just decided to go with the original diagnosis that I am dealing with lazy stupid children. I didnt sign up for special education, I signed up for university teaching. The University charges parents money. Everyone who pays - passes. I heard this really stupid opinion MANY times in China: "a good university has no failures, because they have good teachers who do their job right". True in a perfect world. In reality, many schools in China stop failing students because they want their enrollment to go up. This is one of the stupidest processes I have ever heard of my life. Education is no longer education. In fact, Chinese teachers at the English Dept wouldnt fail students AT ANY POINT, because the dean would come down hard on them for being "bad teachers". That's not at all entertaining the possibility that the students are not doing their part. A good university motivates the students by grading, and tests them to make sure they are performing well. At Geng Dan, neither were there, as no matter what the students did, they got the diploma. Every Chinese student knows our Yale and Harvard Universities, but Beijing University has a great tradition and marks the intellectual center of the universe for classical Chinese culture and education. This campus evokes all that we imagine is "The East." What struck me was how many US, Australian and other nationalities were represented in the student body. If I were an aspiring college student again, here at the dawn of the 21st century, Beijing University would be on my list of top universities. -

Part 2 of 3. My 6 months "teaching" in China was spent here. This is the Geng Dan College of the Beijing University of Technology (北京工业大学耿丹学院). I am not sure how I was teaching, because no one did any learning. All the students at this "university" were preoccupied with smoking, drinking, video games, mobile phones, and MP3 players, and acted like total vegetables in all English classes (not just mine). Its a school where the rich folk send their spoiled little kids to pretend that they are getting an education. Stupid. Third (and final) part of the wonderful teaching experience at the Geng Dan College (full Chinese name: 北京工业大学耿丹学院). Eventually I got pissed off with the school not being a school but a mere diploma mill, bought a flight tiket, and left. The 6 months [not working] here did allow me to see a huge chunk of China, but I am still unable to wrap my head around how insanely lazy and spoiled my students were. Follow me on a tour of the beautiful Beijing (or "Peking" as some still refer to it) University campus. Every Chinese student knows our Yale and Harvard Universities, but Beijing University has a great tradition and marks the intellectual center of the universe for classical Chinese culture and education. This campus evokes all that we imagine is "The East." What struck me was how many US, Australian and other nationalities were represented in the student body. If I were an aspiring college student again, here at the dawn of the 21st century, Beijing University would be on my list of top universities.

Geng Dan College is a Tier-3 school, meaning if you didn't get into any good schools, and the not so good ones didn't take you either, you came here, didn't study, and somehow got a diploma anyway.
For the first month or so I thought the students were just "warming up" to me. But afterwards it becamse apparent that they did no work in any of the English classes, and that the whole university is more than less a joke. Cheating during exams was rife, and there are no consequences for whatever behaviour the "students" engage in.
The place is a sham, it is a diploma mill, no one studies there, and it was just a tremendous waste of time being there. The only consolation is that it allowed me to see a lot of China which I still believe is an AMAZING country and everyone should visit.
But the school BLOWS!

Some people replied to this video mentioning "youthful rebellion" and the like. The rebellion argument cannot stand. If someone is interested in rebelling, please leave the classroom. That's it.
I started the course with textbooks I was given by the dean. They are actually an advanced coursebook, and the dean assured me that their English comprehension level is sufficient. That turned out to be less than true half the time, and is a failure of the school to effectively administer tests and determine who can be in which level.
A few weeks into the semester, after not having any sort of response from the students, I dropped the textbooks and started introducing more general and easier topics. eg.: "would you like an exciting or boring job? why?" No response, even when led into it. I would give them word lists and ask them to use the words to explain their stance. Nothing. Literally , no response.
I tried role playing. So in a lesson about "what makes a good policeman", I had one student act as a cop, and another as a robber. They did nothing. Didn't want to talk. Didn't want to do anything. After class the students went to the dean and told her that my classes are boring (huh!?!?!?!?! acting out robber and cop is boring? that's a full opportunity for laughs and jokes...) AND some said that I was crazy because "why are we learning about robbers"?
They are spoiled little rich kids, not adults. They expect to be entertained, not trained. They want fun, no work. Jesus Christ, I cannot express that enough.
After that we started watching movies. James Bond, Bourne Identity, Lord of War. Typical fun stuff for Chinese boys and girls. Guns and action. The movies were a great hit, UNTIL I asked them to tell me "what does so and so do?" "who is this?' "who is that?". Silence.
Movie worksheet? Wouldnt even read it after I filled in the blanks.
So I just decided to go with the original diagnosis that I am dealing with lazy stupid children. I didnt sign up for special education, I signed up for university teaching.
The University charges parents money. Everyone who pays - passes. I heard this really stupid opinion MANY times in China: "a good university has no failures, because they have good teachers who do their job right". True in a perfect world. In reality, many schools in China stop failing students because they want their enrollment to go up. This is one of the stupidest processes I have ever heard of my life. Education is no longer education.
In fact, Chinese teachers at the English Dept wouldnt fail students AT ANY POINT, because the dean would come down hard on them for being "bad teachers". That's not at all entertaining the possibility that the students are not doing their part.
A good university motivates the students by grading, and tests them to make sure they are performing well. At Geng Dan, neither were there, as no matter what the students did, they got the diploma.
Please do go to my Back to China (Part 8) video, in there in about middle of the vid you will find scenes from a different school, the Heng Shui Highschool where I spent 2002 and 2003. Totally different experience, and it is a HIGHSCHOOL! Everyone is interested in learning, asking/answering questions, repeating answers, doing work, and having fun.
That "university" is one of those things that have to be seen and experienced to be believed.

Third (and final) part of the wonderful teaching experience at the Geng Dan College (full Chinese name: 北京工业大学耿丹学院). Eventually I got pissed off with the school not being a school but a mere diploma mill, bought a flight tiket, and left.
The 6 months [not working] here did allow me to see a huge chunk of China, but I am still unable to wrap my head around how insanely lazy and spoiled my students were.
It was a very interesting experience, but totally unnecessary.

Some people replied to this video mentioning "youthful rebellion" and the like. The rebellion argument cannot stand. If someone is interested in rebelling, please leave the classroom. That's it.
I started the course with textbooks I was given by the dean. They are actually an advanced coursebook, and the dean assured me that their English comprehension level is sufficient. That turned out to be less than true half the time, and is a failure of the school to effectively administer tests and determine who can be in which level.
A few weeks into the semester, after not having any sort of response from the students, I dropped the textbooks and started introducing more general and easier topics. eg.: "would you like an exciting or boring job? why?" No response, even when led into it. I would give them word lists and ask them to use the words to explain their stance. Nothing. Literally , no response.
I tried role playing. So in a lesson about "what makes a good policeman", I had one student act as a cop, and another as a robber. They did nothing. Didn't want to talk. Didn't want to do anything. After class the students went to the dean and told her that my classes are boring (huh!?!?!?!?! acting out robber and cop is boring? that's a full opportunity for laughs and jokes...) AND some said that I was crazy because "why are we learning about robbers"?
They are spoiled little rich kids, not adults. They expect to be entertained, not trained. They want fun, no work. Jesus Christ, I cannot express that enough.
After that we started watching movies. James Bond, Bourne Identity, Lord of War. Typical fun stuff for Chinese boys and girls. Guns and action. The movies were a great hit, UNTIL I asked them to tell me "what does so and so do?" "who is this?' "who is that?". Silence.
Movie worksheet? Wouldnt even read it after I filled in the blanks.
So I just decided to go with the original diagnosis that I am dealing with lazy stupid children. I didnt sign up for special education, I signed up for university teaching.
The University charges parents money. Everyone who pays - passes. I heard this really stupid opinion MANY times in China: "a good university has no failures, because they have good teachers who do their job right". True in a perfect world. In reality, many schools in China stop failing students because they want their enrollment to go up. This is one of the stupidest processes I have ever heard of my life. Education is no longer education.
In fact, Chinese teachers at the English Dept wouldnt fail students AT ANY POINT, because the dean would come down hard on them for being "bad teachers". That's not at all entertaining the possibility that the students are not doing their part.

The former imperial palace, surrounded by wall was called ‘the forbidden city’ because a commoner could not enter here. At least that beautiful is the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, where pieces from the ancient artist await the visitors. When in Beijing, one must not forget the Buddhist temples, and the zoo, where the very rare panda bears are living. Let us not forget about the gastronomical part of China, since the country’s cuisine is one of the best on Earth. From Beijing we can travel to the old capital, Xian, where the famous clay soldiers can be seen. The Ming Dinasty Tombs are only 50 kilometres far from Beijing, but the Great Wall of China is not far either.

School, college and university students from across the United Kingdom marched in London, 19 November to demand free education in the UK.

The march will assemble at Malet Street and march around Russell Square, down Kingsway to the Strand and then to Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and ending at Parliament.

Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design welcomed award-winning architect Nader Tehrani, co-founder and principal of NADAAA — the firm selected to design the new home of the Daniels Faculty at historic One Spadina Crescent — to present a bulthaup lecture titled "Catalytic Structures: Transformed Types" at the University of Toronto on November 5, 2013. A leading figure in architecture today, Tehrani is also the Head of the Department of Architecture at MIT.
Tehrani's work with NADAAA — and from 1986 to 2011 with Office dA — has been recognized with many prestigious awards, including fourteen Progressive Architecture Awards, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture (2002), and the Cooper Hewitt Award for Architecture (2007). NADAAA was also recently ranked the number-one design firm in Architecture Magazine's 2013 peer-reviewed list of the 100 top architectural firms in the United States.
In addition to the revitalization of One Spadina, recent commissions include the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne and the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Tehrani has also designed award-winning projects such as Tongxian Art Gatehouse in Beijing, Fleet Library at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Multi-faith Spiritual Center at Northeastern University, and the LEED-Gold certified Macallen Building in Boston.
Tehrani's lecture explores how experimenting with structure can influence the emergence of new and innovative ways to design common building types, from educational institutions to private dwellings. Though Christian evangelization in China had been carried on as early as the sixth century, it was not until the early part of the twentieth century that Benedictines began missionary activity among the Chinese. At the request of two Chinese scholars that the Holy See open a university under Catholic auspices in Peking, Pius XI asked the Benedictines of the Archabbey of St. Vincent, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to undertake this work. In 1924 the Catholic University of Peking (Fu Jen University) was established. The university prospered, and by 1929 Pius XI expressed a wish that opportunities for higher education be offered to Chinese women and girls as well. He asked specifically that the Benedictine community in St. Joseph, Minnesota, be invited to establish a women's college in connection with Fu Jen University.
The appeal to the Benedictine Sisters of St. Joseph, Minnesota, came through Father Francis Clougherty, as a representative of Pius XI and the Apostolic Delegate in Peking. In August, 1929, Father Francis appeared at St. Benedict's Convent with a request for Sisters to work in Peking, China. On September 1, the community chapter voted to accept this call and thus committed St. Benedict's Convent to mission work in China.
By the spring of 1930 Mother Louise Walz had chosen six Ssisters from a list of 100 volunteers to pioneer the community's first foreign mission. They were: Sister Francetta Vetter, Sister Regia Zens, Sister Ronayne Gergen, Sister Rachel Lou1an, Sister Donalda Terhaar, and Sister Wibora Muehlenbein. On August 31, 1930, these six Sisters left St. Benedict's for the West Coast, where they boarded the Empress of Japan at Victoria, British Columbia, September 4. After a 20-day ocean voyage, the group disembarked on Chinese shores on September 24.

The Pathways Lecture Series, the Global Studies Society of Rider University brings academics and field practitioners to the table to discuss their academic research and experiences to enhance knowledge and inspire.
Currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Princeton University, Zhenqing Zhang discusses his research into the question of why intellectual property theft remain so rampant in China despite the country's consistent enforcement efforts since China's WTO entry?
Zhenqing Zhang (张振庆) received his Ph.D in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. His research interests focus on China's integration into the global political economy and China's response to the diffusion of global norms.
During the fellowship period, he will work on a book manuscript based on his dissertation entitled "From Words to Deeds: Explaining the Implementation of China's Intellectual Property Rights Policy since its WTO Entry." Based on an 18 months long extensive field work in China from 2007 to 2008, this project aims to tease out the interaction between the Chinese domestic societal and state actors shapes China's attitudes toward the global intellectual property rights (IPR) regime. Dr. Zhang received his B.A. and M.A. from the Beijing Foreign Affairs College,China. He also holds a graduate certificate from the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies.
