The Viennese coffee house (German: Wiener Kaffeehaus) is a typical institution of Vienna that played an important part shaping Viennese culture.
Since October 2011 the "Viennese Coffee House Culture" is listed as "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in the Austrian inventory of the "National Agency for the Intangible Cultural Heritage", a part of UNESCO. The Viennese coffee house is described in this inventory as a place "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill."
The social practices, the rituals, the elegance create the very specific atmosphere of the Viennese café. Coffee Houses entice with a wide variety of coffee drinks, international newspapers, and pastry creations. Typical for Viennese Coffee Houses are marble tabletops, Thonet chairs, newspaper tables and interior design details in the style of Historicism. The Austrian writer Stefan Zweig described the Viennese Coffee House as an institution of a special kind, "actually a sort of democratic club, open to everyone for the price of a cheap cup of coffee, where every guest can sit for hours with this little offering, to talk, write, play cards, receive post, and above all consume an unlimited number of newspapers and journals." Zweig in fact attributed a good measure of Vienna's cosmopolitan air to the rich daily diet of current and international information offered in the coffee houses.
A coffeehouse, coffee shop, or café is an establishment which primarily serves hot coffee, related coffee beverages (e.g., café latte, cappuccino, espresso), tea, and other hot beverages. Some coffeehouses also serve cold beverages such as iced coffee and iced tea. Many cafés also serve some type of food, such as light snacks, muffins, or pastries. Coffeehouses range from owner-operated small businesses to large multinational companies such as Starbucks.
In continental Europe, a café is a traditional type of coffeehouse, but elsewhere the term "café" may also refer to a tea room, "greasy spoon" (a small and inexpensive restaurant, colloquially called a "caff"), transport café, or other casual eating and drinking place. A coffeehouse may share some of the same characteristics of a bar or restaurant, but it is different from a cafeteria. Many coffee houses in the Middle East and in West Asian immigrant districts in the Western world offer shisha (nargile in Greek and Turkish), flavored tobacco smoked through a hookah. Espresso bars are a type of coffeehouse that specializes in serving espresso and espresso-based drinks.

If the signature social event of Vienna is the waltz, then the signature social space is the Kaffeehaus. Worn, charming, permeated with a mild air of sophistication and self-possession, Vienna's handful of remaining old-world coffeehouses are equally accommodating of the spontaneous visitor and the clockwork regular—they are, in short, an encapsulation of the Austrian capital itself, and the city would not be what it is without them. Travel video about destination Vienna in Austria. Vienna is one of the world's most beautiful, historic cities, brimming with nostalgia and with all the grand architecture of a once glorious empire, for three centuries it was home to the Austrian monarchy. The architectural image of the city is dominated by the Ringstrasse, a four kilometre long boulevard which encircles the centre of the city. It was under the supervision of Maria Theresia that the magnificent royal residence, the Schönbrunn Palace, was completed. More than 1,700 beautifully-preserved rooms afforded the large Imperial family much freedom of movement and its magnificent interior décor is one of the most lavish of its time. The Palace Grounds contain the outstanding Neptune Fountain and at the highest point, the Gloriette...
One of my favourites so far, enigmatic and rich.
After an engineering career took John Clark out of state for a few years, he returned to his hometown of Maryville determined to recreate the West Coast coffee flavors he now craved. "Up Close" host Stephanie Aldrich talked to this roastmaster about how he took his garage hobby and turned it into a brewing business called "Vienna Coffee Company." Up Close is a production of East Tennessee PBS, presented by Tennova Healthcare.

The Irresistible Bean explores coffee's origins in Ethiopia and its triumphant spread over five Continents, sparking revolution, controversy, creativity, business and slavery along the way. The episode details the first coffeehouse traditions, which began on dirt floors and eventually developed into more refined Arabic home versions, and chronicles the popularity of the Venetian latte, which developed a reputation that is seen in the Western coffee-marketing 450 years later. The Irresistible Bean also examines coffee's role in historical events, including the French Revolution, the American Revolution and the Haitian slave rebellion. 6/2 Sunday It's our last day in Vienna. We need to see St. Stephan's Cathedral. We walk to the city center, even though it's another drizzly day again. The Cathedral is really beautiful. It's being cleaned, and there's scaffolding all around. The interior is given an impressive lighting treatment, with color panels along the high church windows, projected lights throwing color and shadows onto the pillars and arches in the Cathedral, with its elaborate altars and great central altar. We opt for a tour of the catacombs. We go underneath the church floor, with a pretty big crowd, where we see the copper coffins of the Hapsburg royalty, urns containing the intestines of bishops who were mummified -- the other body parts were shared among some other church properties -- and ...
For more from Quadriga, go to http://www.dw.com/en/program/quadriga/s-7296-9798 In Austria, Sunday could see a right-wing populist elected to the position of president. The FPÖ'S Norbert Hofer, whose xenophobic slogans have struck a chord with voters, aims to tap into the constitution's potential for authoritarian power. Norbert Hofer could take the reins of government by emergency decree if he wins Sunday's elections. The current state of play augurs well for him. In the first round of voting, the traditionally popular Social Democrats, the SPÖ, and the Conservatives, the ÖVP, got a taste of the electorate's wrath. Chancellor Werner Faymann of the SPÖ resigned. It seems the Alpine republic is lurching to the right as its voters follow a pattern that has emerged throughout Europe. Is ...
So you think my exterior seems a little out of focus
Because I don't talk in cliches that people try to use to stroke us
I don't care too much for clicks and gangs and little sewing circles
If you want a place in this rat race I say run out and join the circus
If you look inside my head
You will see things that you probably shouldn't see
Because my outside is off-center
But I guarantee it's stranger inside of me
Have you ever felt like pulling your insides out
Cause they're burning
You feel caged like an animal that wants to fuck
And you're yearning for something strange, unexpected
Unexplainable to happen
