It tells the story of a small boy who finds the daily noise of his town painful; the chickens, the church bells, the blacksmiths banging, so he escapes it by stealing a row boat and floating to a near by island where he plays music on his homemade violin. His playing attracts the attention of a hermit who lives on the island. The man introduces the boy to an instrument called Yanco and teaches him to play it. When the man dies, the boy begins sneaking out at night to play Yanco, the sounds scare the townspeople who think the music is coming from an evil spirit in the woods. Eventually the townspeople kill the boy when they discover he is the source of this strange music.
