Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America.
In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.

"Our Alaskan Winter" is a silent film by Harmon “Bud” Helmericks and Constance Helmericks, circa 1949. The film details the Helmericks' lives as homesteaders in the Brooks Mountain Range of Alaska, and as explorers of northern Alaska and Canada.
Bud Helmericks and his first wife Constance (Connie) Helmericks spent more than a decade living in and exploring northern Alaska during the 1940s and 1950s. Constance was the best-selling author of eight non-fiction books, five detailing their lives and adventures in the far north. Films that the couple shot on 16mm color film were the subject of national lecture tours. Shot with great care and artfulness under extreme living conditions, these films depict the unique lives of the Helmericks family, as well as the rapidly-changing lives of Iñupiat peoples during the era of pre-Statehood and pre-pipeline Alaska.

Building The Alaskan Highway - Mega Structure.
The Alaska Highway (also known as the Alaskan Highway, Alaska-Canadian Highway, or ALCAN Highway) was constructed during World War II for the purpose of connecting the contiguous United States to Alaska through Canada. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.

Alaska (
i/əˈlæskə/) is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east are the Canadian territory of Yukon and the Canadian province of British Columbia; to the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. To the west and south is the Pacific Ocean, with Russia (specifically, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai) farther west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 3rd least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's residents (estimated at 738,432 by the Census Bureau in 2015) live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism and military bases are also a significant part of the economy.
Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.

According to these notes, the film includes scenes of the “Arctic Tern” (Cessna 170 airplane) on skis; Six different airplanes, all named the “Arctic Tern” and all painted with a bird symbol, were used in the production of the three Helmericks films over seven years; Upon return to Brooks Range cabin in Alaska after many months away, Bud takes down hanging empty gas cans left to scare bears away; Bud shows how the arctic dweller uses an ice chisel — it takes about one hour to cut through the four-foot ice of Takahula Lake; Lifting out net and fish catch; Icy lake water is hauled to the house; Tramping down an airfield for the plane with snowshoes; It is necessary to push a small piece of stove-wood under each ski of the airplane when parked to keep it from freezing down; Oliktok Point on the Arctic Ocean; Friends run out of their door waving joyously; Bud and George work with shovels and flags to make a more safe airplane field; Oolak returns hours later with a load of small driftwood sticks for fuel; Sled with a big sail approaches out of the frozen ocean; Carrie with her boy Maugulauk and husband Jacob; When Carrie becomes ill, Bud flies her to Point Barrow Hospital during wind storm; Back at Oliktok Point camp, Connie directs the airplane to safety; Dog buried in snow in a spring blizzard during month of May; Another dogsled visitor arrives, and all shake hands with Colliak, who has come from 100 miles inland; Caribou butchered; Sawing out new sled from driftwood as Lydia plays about; Apiak, older son, builds sled flooring — it is necessary to make an entirely new sled almost every season; Flight out over the polar ice fifty miles; Landing fifty miles offshore where Apiak had designated a hunting camp in his earlier explorations by sled; Pitch tent; Rifle close at hand in case of polar bears; Travel via dogsled and hunting for seals; Polar bear tracks; Connie comes up to her dead polar bear — shot from the tent at 1 a.m. in late May — feasting (not shown) followed immediately after butchering; Seal meat goes into modern pressure cooker; Apiak serves dogs their meal; Starving seal has lost its diving hole and can’t find the ocean — carried in a sack on the sled to the nearest seal hole and it finally dove down into the ocean; On shore after two months at sea; Summer tent; Lydia, Nannie and George; Saying goodbye; Home to cabin at Takahula Lake; Unloading cargo from Hughes, the trading post (100 miles away), at the new dock at Takahula Lake; Bud cuts moose hide into strips and makes chairs; Connie casting for pike at tent camp at nearby Iniakuk Lake; Broken airplane tail — Bud fixes it by taking off part of the tail and then fortunately it flew OK; Connie catches a grayling; Geese migrating; Grizzly and moose and other animals; Roasting caribou ribs; Connie uses the little yellow kayak on Takahula Lake before winter; Ice pans float down the adjacent Alatna River; Arrigetch Peaks rising above the house; Bud and Connie, in full winter dress, are prepared for winter again; Connie reads contentedly by the blazing hearth. It begins at the junction with several Canadian highways in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, and runs to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Completed in 1942 at a length of approximately 2,700 kilometres (1,700 mi), as of 2012 it is 2,232 km (1,387 mi) long. The difference in distance is due to constant reconstruction of the highway, which has rerouted and straightened out numerous sections. The highway was opened to the public in 1948. Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.

Denali National Park is located about six hundred and thirty miles from the southern coast of Alaska and is nine thousand six hundred square miles of original Sub-Arctic wilderness. The history of the region began millions of years ago when mighty tectonic plates collided. The force of the collision folded the granite and sedimentary rock together at a huge elevation which subsequently formed the highest mountain in North America, Mount Mckinley. The coniferous forests consist primarily of birch and fir and deciduous trees and shrubs cover the stone-based valleys. An amazing variety of bushes, herbs and flowers turn the landscape into an array of bright colour. On the thin humus above the permafrost soil there’s vegetation such as Reindeer Moss, Wild Flowers, Reed Grass and Berries. The bright white fur of the dall sheep provide perfect camouflage in winter. Their favorite location is steep, rocky slopes where they feel safe from predators such as grizzly bears and wolves. The park was established primarily to protect the wild animals that were destroyed in large numbers by hunters at the beginning of the Gold Rush. But today Denali National Park is a natural paradise, a wilderness at the end of the world!

Vancouver is a young city full of joie de vivre with captivating charm and European flair, set in a beautiful location and with a mild climate. Next to the snow-white tented roof of the densely built quay near to Canada Place, is the centre of a new harbour where cruise ships from all over the world come and go. Ketchikan is a small town is located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and wood but today it relies upon tourism. Creek Street is a wooden construction on stilts located along Ketchikan Creek, previously the city’s red light district but now full of elegant shops and restaurants. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began! The spacious and speedy gondolas of the Mount Roberts Tramway travel up the mountain of the same name with fine views of the harbour with its cruise ships, the Gastineau Channel, the Chilkat Mountains and the Inside Passage. The ice flows of the thirty two glaciers of the Kenai National Park Fjords are now melting faster than they can grow and the fjords are becoming larger. From its inception in 1885, the Alaska School Service was charged with the assimilation of Alaskan Native children into mainstream American values and ways of life. Working in the missions and schools along the Yukon River were George E. Boulter and Alice Green, his future wife. Boulter, a Londoner originally drawn to the Klondike, had begun teaching in 1905 and by 1910 had been promoted to superintendent of schools for the Upper Yukon District. In 1907, Green left a comfortable family life in New Orleans to answer the call to serve in the Episcopal mission boarding schools for Native children at Anvik and Nenana, where she occupied the position of government teacher. As school superintendent, Boulter wrote frequently to his superiors in Seattle and Washington, Dc, to discuss numerous administrative matters and to report on problems and conditions overall.from 1906 to 1918, Green kept a personal journalhitherto in private possessionin which she reflected on her professional duties and her domestic life in Alaska. Collected in The Teacher and the Superintendent are Boulters letters and Greens diary. Together, their vivid, firsthand impressions bespeak the earnest but paternalistic beliefs of those who lived and worked in immensely isolated regions, seeking to bring Christianity and civilized values to the Native children in their care. Beyond shedding private light on the missionary spirit, however, Boulter and Green have also left us an invaluable account of the daily conflicts that occurred between church and government and of the many injustices suffered by the Native population in the face of the misguided efforts of both institutions..
