Alaska's Inside Passage is the title of a fascinating ocean cruise and features the wonders of nature and amazing natural landscapes. It is a journey to the solitude of Alaska and its splendid wildlife. We begin in Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska. Vancouver is a young city full of joie de vivre with captivating charm and European flair, set in a beautiful location and with a mild climate. Next to the snow-white tented roof of the densely built quay near to Canada Place, is the centre of a new harbour where cruise ships from all over the world come and go. Ketchikan is a small town is located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and wood but today it relies upon tourism. Creek Street is a wooden construction on stilts located along Ketchikan Creek, previously the city’s red light district but now full of elegant shops and restaurants. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began! The spacious and speedy gondolas of the Mount Roberts Tramway travel up the mountain of the same name with fine views of the harbour with its cruise ships, the Gastineau Channel, the Chilkat Mountains and the Inside Passage. The ice flows of the thirty two glaciers of the Kenai National Park Fjords are now melting faster than they can grow and the fjords are becoming larger. Yet still the landscape is a huge wonder of nature, a remote world of ice and snow. Alaska is the epitome of vastness, wilderness and natural scenery, a unique habitat far from civilization.

Te Papa, . The national museum. Particularly good if you have children to entertain on a rainy day. Free (except for the occasional special presentation).
Museum of Wellington City & Sea, Queens Wharf, . Daily, 10AM-5PM, closed 25 Dec. A well-presented museum of the history of Wellington, including its maritime history. Free.
City Gallery, Civic Square. Lacks a permanent collection but runs a consistently avant-garde set of exhibits. It also has the excellent cafe Nikau attached to it.
The Wellington Cable Car, from Lambton Quay (next to the McDonald's), 04 472 2199, . Daily until 10PM. The easiest way to get a nice view of the city and harbor, the Cable Car runs on rails from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden in Kelburn every ten minutes. $3.50 one way, $6.00 return (Concession prices are available for children, students and senior citizens over 65)
Frank Kitts Park. A great place to wander around, with walls to climb, inline skates, and jet ski rental.
Futuna Chapel. Important architecture modernist masterpiece located in suburb of Karori. Visit by arrangement
Wrights Hill. More views, and WWII underground tunnels which are open to the public on public holidays for a small fee.
Brooklyn Wind Turbine. Another great place to go to get an excellent view of the city, the harbour, and Cook Strait, plus experience the wind! Access is signposted from Brooklyn shops: head up Todman Street.
Massey Memorial An interesting place to go if you want to see a large memorial in the middle of nowhere, with a good view of the surrounding harbour.
Karori Cemetery is an interesting picnic spot.
Elmscourt an historic art deco apartment block on the corner of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street.
Oriental Parade. A new beach. However if you are not from somewhere really cold it is unlikely that it will be hot enough for you to be in desperate need for a swim. There is a spa pool (jacuzzi) in Freyberg Swimming pool (on Oriental Parade) which is inexpensive if you enjoy "people soup".
Zealandia (Karori Wildlife Sanctuary), end of Waiapu Rd, (first left after the Karori Tunnel), . Daily 10AM-5PM (last entry 4PM), closed 25 Dec. A predator-proof fence encloses an old water catchment area, forming a mainland island that provides a natural haven for endangered native birds, tuatara, wētā, and other indigenous flora and fauna, safe from introduced predators. By far the most convenient place in the country to see rare New Zealand wildlife. $17.50, child $9, more for guided tours.
Plimmer's Ark. Under and in the Old Bank Arcade on the corner of Lambton Quay and Customhouse Quay - near Plimmer's Steps. A hundred years ago a Bank was built on top of a wrecked ship that had been used as a market. When they renovated the building they discovered the ship's timbers and preserved the remains in the building! Just take the escalator down through the bank vault doors.
Parliament Buildings, the Beehive (or Executive Wing), and the Parliamentary Library. The grounds of Parliament are open to the public. Known as the hill, Parliament grounds are at the foot of Molesworth and Bowen Streets, where they meet Lambton Quay.
National Library of New Zealand, corner of Aitken and Molesworth Streets (across the road from the Cathedral and Parliament), . The library regularly holds exhibitions.
Turnbull House, Bowen Street (just across the road from Parliament Buildings). This imposing brick mansion now seems small and out of place amongst the surrounding high-rises.
The Old Government Buildings, with the cenotaph in the foreground and NZ Post headquarters behind.
Old Government Buildings opposite Parliament at 15 Lambton Quay. This is the largest wooden building in the southern hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. It is now the home of Victoria University Law School.
Old St Paul's, (one block east of Parliament). This was the Anglican center for decades. Superseded by the new cathedral north of Parliament, this one is popular for weddings and funerals.
Wellington Central Library, (in the city square, next to the information centre), . It's huge with great places to sit and read or if you bring your laptop to connect home via one of the city's paid-for wi-fi networks. Entry is free.

A look at London Victoria Railway Station on the late morning and early afternoon of Friday 23rd January 2015.
Victoria, London's second busiest rail terminal, is situated in the south west part of the city near Hyde Park and is the principal station for destinations along the south coast including Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Eastbourne as well as the south London suburbs such as Peckham.
At the end of this video, steam locomotive SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 number 35028 'Clan Line' is seen at the station waiting to depart with the 'Belmond British Pullman' to Shelford.

Victoria Quays
Victoria Quays (formerly Sheffield Canal Basin) is a large canal basin in Sheffield, England. It was constructed 1816–1819 as the terminus of the Sheffield Canal (now part of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation) and includes the former coal yards of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. The basin ceased operation as a cargo port in 1970 and the site and buildings were largely neglected. A restoration and redevelopment of 1992–1994 reopened the site providing new office and business space and leisure facilities as well as berths for leisure canal boats. There are a number of Grade II listed buildings on the site. These include the original Terminal Warehouse of 1819, the Straddle Warehouse (1895–1898), a grain warehouse (c1860), and a curved terrace of coal merchant's offices (c1870).

The easiest way to get a nice view of the city and harbor, the Cable Car runs on rails from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden in Kelburn every ten minutes. $3.50 one way, $6.00 return (Concession prices are available for children, students and senior citizens over 65) Frank Kitts Park. A great place to wander around, with walls to climb, inline skates, and jet ski rental. Futuna Chapel. Important architecture modernist masterpiece located in suburb of Karori. Visit by arrangement Wrights Hill. More views, and WWII underground tunnels which are open to the public on public holidays for a small fee. Brooklyn Wind Turbine. Another great place to go to get an excellent view of the city, the harbour, and Cook Strait, plus experience the wind! Access is signposted from Brooklyn shops: head up Todman Street. Massey Memorial An interesting place to go if you want to see a large memorial in the middle of nowhere, with a good view of the surrounding harbour. Karori Cemetery is an interesting picnic spot. Elmscourt an historic art deco apartment block on the corner of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street. Oriental Parade. A new beach. However if you are not from somewhere really cold it is unlikely that it will be hot enough for you to be in desperate need for a swim. There is a spa pool (jacuzzi) in Freyberg Swimming pool (on Oriental Parade) which is inexpensive if you enjoy "people soup". Zealandia (Karori Wildlife Sanctuary), end of Waiapu Rd, (first left after the Karori Tunnel), . Daily 10AM-5PM (last entry 4PM), closed 25 Dec. A predator-proof fence encloses an old water catchment area, forming a mainland island that provides a natural haven for endangered native birds, tuatara, wētā, and other indigenous flora and fauna, safe from introduced predators. By far the most convenient place in the country to see rare New Zealand wildlife. $17.50, child $9, more for guided tours. Plimmer's Ark. Under and in the Old Bank Arcade on the corner of Lambton Quay and Customhouse Quay - near Plimmer's Steps. A hundred years ago a Bank was built on top of a wrecked ship that had been used as a market. When they renovated the building they discovered the ship's timbers and preserved the remains in the building! Just take the escalator down through the bank vault doors. Parliament Buildings, the Beehive (or Executive Wing), and the Parliamentary Library. The grounds of Parliament are open to the public. Known as the hill, Parliament grounds are at the foot of Molesworth and Bowen Streets, where they meet Lambton Quay. National Library of New Zealand, corner of Aitken and Molesworth Streets (across the road from the Cathedral and Parliament), . The library regularly holds exhibitions. Turnbull House, Bowen Street (just across the road from Parliament Buildings). This imposing brick mansion now seems small and out of place amongst the surrounding high-rises. The Old Government Buildings, with the cenotaph in the foreground and NZ Post headquarters behind. Old Government Buildings opposite Parliament at 15 Lambton Quay. This is the largest wooden building in the southern hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. It is now the home of Victoria University Law School. Old St Paul's, (one block east of Parliament). This was the Anglican center for decades. Superseded by the new cathedral north of Parliament, this one is popular for weddings and funerals. Wellington Central Library, (in the city square, next to the information centre), . It's huge with great places to sit and read or if you bring your laptop to connect home via one of the city's paid-for wi-fi networks. Entry is free. -

Victoria, London's second busiest rail terminal, is situated in the south west part of the city near Hyde Park and is the principal station for destinations along the south coast including Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Eastbourne as well as the south London suburbs such as Peckham. At the end of this video, steam locomotive SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 number 35028 'Clan Line' is seen at the station waiting to depart with the 'Belmond British Pullman' to Shelford. London Victoria Railway Station
A look at London Victoria Railway Station on the late morning and early afternoon of Friday 23rd January 2015. Victoria, London's second busiest rail terminal, is situated in the south west part of the city near Hyde Park and is the principal station for destinations along the south coast including Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Eastbourne as well as the south London suburbs such as Peckham. Yet still the landscape is a huge wonder of nature, a remote world of ice and snow. Alaska is the epitome of vastness, wilderness and natural scenery, a unique habitat far from civilization.

The Wellington Cable Car, from Lambton Quay (next to the McDonald's), 04 472 2199, . Daily until 10PM. The easiest way to get a nice view of the city and harbor, the Cable Car runs on rails from Lambton Quay to the Botanic Garden in Kelburn every ten minutes. $3.50 one way, $6.00 return (Concession prices are available for children, students and senior citizens over 65)
Frank Kitts Park. A great place to wander around, with walls to climb, inline skates, and jet ski rental.
Futuna Chapel. Important architecture modernist masterpiece located in suburb of Karori. Visit by arrangement
Wrights Hill. More views, and WWII underground tunnels which are open to the public on public holidays for a small fee.
Brooklyn Wind Turbine. Another great place to go to get an excellent view of the city, the harbour, and Cook Strait, plus experience the wind! Access is signposted from Brooklyn shops: head up Todman Street.
Massey Memorial An interesting place to go if you want to see a large memorial in the middle of nowhere, with a good view of the surrounding harbour.
Karori Cemetery is an interesting picnic spot.
Elmscourt an historic art deco apartment block on the corner of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street.
Oriental Parade. A new beach. However if you are not from somewhere really cold it is unlikely that it will be hot enough for you to be in desperate need for a swim. There is a spa pool (jacuzzi) in Freyberg Swimming pool (on Oriental Parade) which is inexpensive if you enjoy "people soup".
Zealandia (Karori Wildlife Sanctuary), end of Waiapu Rd, (first left after the Karori Tunnel), . Daily 10AM-5PM (last entry 4PM), closed 25 Dec. A predator-proof fence encloses an old water catchment area, forming a mainland island that provides a natural haven for endangered native birds, tuatara, wētā, and other indigenous flora and fauna, safe from introduced predators. By far the most convenient place in the country to see rare New Zealand wildlife. $17.50, child $9, more for guided tours.
Plimmer's Ark. Under and in the Old Bank Arcade on the corner of Lambton Quay and Customhouse Quay - near Plimmer's Steps. A hundred years ago a Bank was built on top of a wrecked ship that had been used as a market. When they renovated the building they discovered the ship's timbers and preserved the remains in the building! Just take the escalator down through the bank vault doors.
Parliament Buildings, the Beehive (or Executive Wing), and the Parliamentary Library. The grounds of Parliament are open to the public. Known as the hill, Parliament grounds are at the foot of Molesworth and Bowen Streets, where they meet Lambton Quay.
National Library of New Zealand, corner of Aitken and Molesworth Streets (across the road from the Cathedral and Parliament), . The library regularly holds exhibitions.
Turnbull House, Bowen Street (just across the road from Parliament Buildings). This imposing brick mansion now seems small and out of place amongst the surrounding high-rises.
The Old Government Buildings, with the cenotaph in the foreground and NZ Post headquarters behind.
Old Government Buildings opposite Parliament at 15 Lambton Quay. This is the largest wooden building in the southern hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. It is now the home of Victoria University Law School.
Old St Paul's, (one block east of Parliament). This was the Anglican center for decades. Superseded by the new cathedral north of Parliament, this one is popular for weddings and funerals.
Wellington Central Library, (in the city square, next to the information centre), . It's huge with great places to sit and read or if you bring your laptop to connect home via one of the city's paid-for wi-fi networks. Entry is free.

Futuna Chapel. Important architecture modernist masterpiece located in suburb of Karori. Visit by arrangement
Wrights Hill. More views, and WWII underground tunnels which are open to the public on public holidays for a small fee.
Brooklyn Wind Turbine. Another great place to go to get an excellent view of the city, the harbour, and Cook Strait, plus experience the wind! Access is signposted from Brooklyn shops: head up Todman Street.
Massey Memorial An interesting place to go if you want to see a large memorial in the middle of nowhere, with a good view of the surrounding harbour.
Karori Cemetery is an interesting picnic spot.
Elmscourt an historic art deco apartment block on the corner of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street.
Oriental Parade. A new beach. However if you are not from somewhere really cold it is unlikely that it will be hot enough for you to be in desperate need for a swim. There is a spa pool (jacuzzi) in Freyberg Swimming pool (on Oriental Parade) which is inexpensive if you enjoy "people soup".
Zealandia (Karori Wildlife Sanctuary), end of Waiapu Rd, (first left after the Karori Tunnel), . Daily 10AM-5PM (last entry 4PM), closed 25 Dec. A predator-proof fence encloses an old water catchment area, forming a mainland island that provides a natural haven for endangered native birds, tuatara, wētā, and other indigenous flora and fauna, safe from introduced predators. By far the most convenient place in the country to see rare New Zealand wildlife. $17.50, child $9, more for guided tours.
Plimmer's Ark. Under and in the Old Bank Arcade on the corner of Lambton Quay and Customhouse Quay - near Plimmer's Steps. A hundred years ago a Bank was built on top of a wrecked ship that had been used as a market. When they renovated the building they discovered the ship's timbers and preserved the remains in the building! Just take the escalator down through the bank vault doors.
Parliament Buildings, the Beehive (or Executive Wing), and the Parliamentary Library. The grounds of Parliament are open to the public. Known as the hill, Parliament grounds are at the foot of Molesworth and Bowen Streets, where they meet Lambton Quay.
National Library of New Zealand, corner of Aitken and Molesworth Streets (across the road from the Cathedral and Parliament), . The library regularly holds exhibitions.
Turnbull House, Bowen Street (just across the road from Parliament Buildings). This imposing brick mansion now seems small and out of place amongst the surrounding high-rises.
The Old Government Buildings, with the cenotaph in the foreground and NZ Post headquarters behind.
Old Government Buildings opposite Parliament at 15 Lambton Quay. This is the largest wooden building in the southern hemisphere and the second-largest in the world. It is now the home of Victoria University Law School.
Old St Paul's, (one block east of Parliament). This was the Anglican center for decades. Superseded by the new cathedral north of Parliament, this one is popular for weddings and funerals.
Wellington Central Library, (in the city square, next to the information centre), . It's huge with great places to sit and read or if you bring your laptop to connect home via one of the city's paid-for wi-fi networks. Entry is free.

Victoria, London's second busiest rail terminal, is situated in the south west part of the city near Hyde Park and is the principal station for destinations along the south coast including Brighton, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis and Eastbourne as well as the south London suburbs such as Peckham.
At the end of this video, steam locomotive SR Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 number 35028 'Clan Line' is seen at the station waiting to depart with the 'Belmond British Pullman' to Shelford.

Its called the true Art of Renaissance taking a derelict forgotten place and bringing it back to life. I was involved with the Sheffield Canal Basin as a design consultant on about the fourth attempt to breath life back into it. That was twenty years ago so this is to show it can happen - regeneration and its also a bit personal to show my family that this is what I did! Now I'm at it again with another great project THE NOBEL CREATIVE CAMPUS POLYTEKNIK VILLAGE on the site of the Nobel's Explosive site and the birth place of ICI on the Ardeer Peninsula so watch this place for its all happening. It includes a proposal for a floating village.

This film is a detailed video review from two separate stays at the Hilton Hotel at Victoria Quays in the S4 district of Sheffield. I stayed here on two occasions in both March and July, 2014, so have combined both of my reviews to make one longer film and to demonstrate two different types of room on the second floor. I booked both stays at the same time via booking.com. In March I stayed in a second floor 'front' (car park) facing room, and in July I stayed in a second floor 'back' (Victoria Quays) facing room - which also had a large balcony. The sad thing about this hotel, is that the most important aspect of the hotel - the bedrooms, are by far the worst feature. This film is a detailed video review from two separate stays at the Hilton Hotel at Victoria Quays in the S4 district of Sheffield. I stayed here on two occasions in both March and July, 2014, so have combined both of my reviews to make one longer film and to demonstrate two different types of room on the second floor. I booked both stays at the same time via booking.com.
In March I stayed in a second floor 'front' (car park) facing room, and in July I stayed in a second floor 'back' (Victoria Quays) facing room - which also had a large balcony.
The sad thing about this hotel, is that the most important aspect of the hotel - the bedrooms, are by far the worst feature. When you stay in a luxury brand hotel such as Hilton, you expect a very high quality. Unfortunately the bedrooms did not deliver, which is a real shame, because the rest of the hotel is great.
In both bedrooms I found the following negative aspects: the rooms were too small; the beds were only doubles and in such luxury hotels I would have expected a king sized bed; the lighting was poor - having to endure a fluorescent tube strip light in the unit above the bed was awful; the beds were on wheels so moved around; there is a hard wooden rim to the beds at shin height, which was responsible for a collection of bruises over the weekend on both occasions; there was no air conditioning which was pretty horrible. In the Summer temperatures it was a bit like sweat box conditions. I can honestly say that the rooms at the 'budget' Holiday Inn Express over the road are MUCH more comfortable.
As for the rest of the hotel, the positives: the location was excellent, near to the City centre, but nicely placed at the Quays with good views from the back of the hotel; the breakfast buffet was outstanding - really tasty, I enjoyed it immensely; the outdoor terrace on the first floor is a pleasure to have a drink or dine on during the Summer; the Living Well gym and pool are excellent; and the staff were truly 100% first class, definitely a Five star attitude to customer service - I found them all really helpful.
In conclusion, I do like this hotel, but I won't stay here again until the bedrooms are modernised, I'd rather go for a modern budget like the nearby Holiday Inn Express where I will be comfortable in the bedroom.
If you are going to stay at this hotel in a standard room, I would suggest that you ask for a second floor balcony room. I do hope that the hotel bedrooms here are upgraded by Hilton.

One of the most striking and interesting of these is the historic "Straddle" building which as the name suggests straddles the whole canal basin has been converted into office space and residential use. It was built by the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company between 1895 & 1898.
Calder Valley Marine plan to turn the Victoria Quays into thriving bustling marina, the intent is to invest in the Quays to provide the facilities such as diesel gas and chandlery plus new and pre-owned boat sales, they will also provide a full time presence at the Quays in a bid to provide the modern discerning boater the things he/she requires in the twenty first century.
Since the takeover of the marina Gordon Lambert, managing Director of Calder Valley Marine has negotiated a deal with Tim Tyler and Jonathan Wilson of Tyler/Wilson Boatbuilders and are now able to offer the high quality shell to the public .
Many examples of their work are available to view for the public to view in a non factory setting, but accompanied factory tours will be available upon request.
This will enable Tim & Jonathan to concentrate on what they do best which is build the high quality steelwork they have built a reputation for the length and breadth of the Country

In this next route learning video, we take an EM1/Class 76 loco along the Woodhead line on a passenger run from Manchester to Sheffield in the year 1956. The scenario used is called 'To Lincoln Central' and it comes with the route. Along the way we will be calling at Guide Bridge, Dinting, Hadfield, Crowden, Penistone and Sheffield Victoria.
