Inside Nature's Giants 2/18 The Fin Whale (Channel 4)
Please Subscribe To The Evolution Documentary YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com Broadcast (2009) The team dissect a 65 foot, 60 ton fin whale, second only in size to its 'cousin' the blue whale. The whale died after being stranded off the coast of Ireland. It's a race against time as whale anatomist Joy Reidenberg flies in from New York before the animal's decomposition causes it to explode on the beach. Veterinary scientist Mark Evans helps investigate why the animal died and explores its extraordinary anatomy. Using whale size machinery, Joy and the team set to work amidst gale force winds, driving rain, blood and freezing conditions. Advancing tides threaten to engulf the whale as the team struggles to complete the dissection . Beneath the blubber, the whale's unique anatomy holds vital clues to its evolution. Using a combination of dissection and computer graphics, the programme discovers an animal whose closest living relative is the hippo. Meanwhile, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins explains why the whale's ancestors may have taken to the water and the evolutionary problems that had to be overcome to transform a land based mammal into an animal that is found in all the world's major oceans, and in waters ranging from the polar to the tropical. The award winning series that gets under the skin of the largest animals on the planet. Inside Nature's Giants dissects these animals to uncover their evolutionary secrets. Fin Whales & Breaching Humpbacks- Blue Ocean Whale Watching Monterey Bay
This video was taken 6/25/11 and shows a fin whale that swam right underneath our boat--you can see the "foot prints" in the beginning of the video (the upwelling water the whale creates by taking a stroke of it's tail) as the whale swam right under us. We then ventured further out into the bay and found dozens of humpbacks. A pair we were with breached together completely out of the water (picture at the end). The video shows one of the whales chin-slapping and pec-slapping with the long pectoral fins. Blue Ocean Whale Watch runs trips out of Moss Landing, CA. Fin Whale butchered at Raghly, Sligo, Ireland. (Time lapse)
On the 28th of November 2011 a dead Fin Whale was washed up on Ardtermon Strand near Raghly in Sligo, Ireland. The whale was probably 2 to 3 years old. Some local people organised a project to preserve the skeleton. On December 10th, the Whale was moved to Raghly Harbour. 5 butchers from Slovakia and Brazil got to work dissecting the animal as 2 PHD students from UCG, who are studying Fin Whales, removed and cataloged all of the bones. The bones will be treated over the next year and finally rebuilt into a skeleton to be put on public display. This video is a partial time lapse of the event. Fin Whale Stranding & Rescue -- 1979
Fin Whale Stranding & Rescue -- 1979
A 40 ft. (~60000 lbs.) adolescent (or sub-adolescent) fin whale stranded near the 7-Mile Bridge in Marathon, Florida Keys, in 1979. In cooperation with Florida authorities the Dolphin Research Center (then: "Institute for Delphinid Research") spent several hours with the whale in shallow waters. The Coast Guard determined that the whale must be moved to deeper water, if at all possible, or it would become a health hazard and a hinderance to navigation. In the off-camera scenes, Mandy Rodriguez, John Lomax, and I got under the whale and tied a rope under its dorsals. The other end was connected to the 40-ft. Coast Guard vessel, who tugged at the whale. The video was re-started when I scrambled on board our boat, showing the fin whale spiral out of the rope harness. The voice in command throughout is Jayne Rodriguez. Note in the beginning how she and Mandy identify the whale species conclusively by the light coloring on the lower right front. Also note Jayne's 'Uh-oh' as she sees her husband Mandy lift the whale's head up and guide it 'with only one finger.' After the on-camera events, the whale was guided between our boat and the Coast Guard vessel toward the Gulf Stream. Once it hit deep waters it performed a characteristic flip of the fluke and sounded. The whale went into the Gulf Stream and we didn't see it again. A few months later we heard of a large whale carcass, perhaps a fin, found in the Bahamas. It's possible that it was the same whale, or not. We'll never know ...

Fin Whale Passage After being absent for nearly four years for intensive cleaning and conservation, the spectacular Humboldt fin whale specimen returns home to the Museum in a newly renovated gallery. The 63-foot-long specimen, which weighs more than 7000 pounds, has been re-articulated to create a more realistic impression of the living animal. An intriguing sound installation and interactive visitor components will accompany the display, which is one of the best and most complete large-whale articulations in the world. www.nhm.org Music from Creative Commons By: PhilTheNil - Marine North ccmixter.org
