Eduardo Vargas

Eduardo Jesús Vargas Rojas (Spanish pronunciation: [eˈðwarðo ˈβarɣas]; born 20 November 1989) is a Chilean footballer who plays as a forward for German club 1899 Hoffenheim and the Chile national team.

Emerging as a top talent at Cobreloa, Vargas moved to Universidad de Chile where he won three titles, including the 2011 Copa Sudamericana where he was named player of the tournament. In 2011 he was co-awarded the Chilean Footballer of the Year and also finished as runner-up for the South American Footballer of the Year. Following an £11.5 million move to Napoli, Vargas had subsequent loan spells at Grêmio, Valencia, and Queens Park Rangers before moving to Hoffenheim in 2015.

A full international since 2010, Vargas has earned 50 caps for Chile, scoring 25 goals. He was part of their squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2015 Copa América, finishing as joint top-scorer with four goals as they won the latter.

Vargas started playing in amateur teams in Renca, Santiago, but he did not participate in other youth teams, because he lived very far away from any club of greater Santiago. In 2006, he continued playing in an amateur third division team, where he participated in a tournament played in Puerto Montt. He was the top scorer of his team.

Jessie Vargas (born May 10, 1989) is an American professional boxer. He is a former WBA (Regular) and IBO light welterweight champion.

Amateur career

Roger Mayweather has trained Vargas since he first laced on a pair of gloves at age eight and since he was ten years old Jessie has also been trained by former world champion Cornelius Boza Edwards.

Jessie had an impressive amateur career of 120–20. He was a two-time Mexican National Champion, a two U.S. Junior National Champion and was a member of the 2008 Mexican Olympic Team.

Professional career

In September 2008, Vargas won his pro debut against the undefeated Joel Gonzalez by first round K.O.

Vargas got attention when, during a fight against Trenton Titsworth, Vargas was kissed on the neck and he responded by hitting Titsworth during the break. Titsworth was docked two points, Vargas one.

In his twelfth fight he knocked out a former IBO Light Welterweight Champion Daniel Sarmiento of Argentina. The bout was the main event of FSN's Fight Night Club. In his next fight Vargas won an eight-round unanimous decision against Mexican Ramón Montaño on the undercard of Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana.

Copa América Centenario

The Copa América Centenario, referred to in English as the 2016 Centennial Copa America, is a scheduled international men's association football tournament due to be held in the United States in 2016. The competition is a celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL and Copa América, and is to be the first Copa América hosted outside of South America.

The tournament, which will be the 45th edition of Copa América since its inception in 1916, will be held as part of an agreement between CONMEBOL (the South American football confederation) and CONCACAF (the football confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean) as a special edition between the usual four-year cycle, and will feature an expanded field of 16 teams (increase from the usual 12), with ten teams from CONMEBOL and six teams from CONCACAF.

Planning

In February 2012, Alfredo Hawit, then Acting President of CONCACAF, announced that the competition would be expected to take place in 2016, as a celebration of CONMEBOL's centenary. CONMEBOL President Nicolás Leoz said "Hopefully we can organize a big event, because we have 100 years and we want to celebrate big."
