Out of the Inkwell was a major animated series of the silent era produced by Max Fleischer from 1918 to 1929. The series was the result of three short experimental films that Max Fleischer independently produced in the period of 1914--1916 to demonstrate his invention, the Rotoscope, which was a device consisting of a film projector and easel used as an aid for achieving realistic movement for animated cartoons. The Rotoscope would project motion picture film through an opening in the easel, covered by a glass pane serving as a drawing surface. The image on the projected film was traced onto paper, advancing the film one frame at a time as each drawing would be made. Fleischer's younger brother Dave Fleischer was working as a clown at Coney Island, and served as the model for what was to become their first famous character that later evolved as "Koko the Clown."

A wonderful early entry in Max Fleischer's "Out Of The Inkwell" series featuring Ko Ko the Clown. The combination of cartoon animation and live action is every bit as impressive today as it was when this film was first released 86 years ago.

Fleischer Studios, Inc., was an American corporation which originated as an animation studio located at 1600 Broadway, New York City, New York.
It was founded in 1921 as Inkwell Studios (or Out of the Inkwell Films) by brothers Max Fleischer and Dave Fleischer who ran the company from its inception until Paramount Pictures, the studio's parent company and the distributor of its films, forced them to resign in April 1942.
In its prime, it was Walt Disney Productions's very first significant competitor and is notable for bringing to the screen cartoons featuring Koko the Clown, Betty Boop, Bimbo, Popeye the Sailor, and Superman.

At the Fleischer studio, a black janitor, learning to hypnotize, conjures Betty Boop out of the inkwell and tries some suggestions on her. But two can play at that game...
A black porter is dusting Max's desk while reading up on hypnotism. He causes Max's pen to spin around on its own and produce Betty. The porter then exerts his will on Betty, causing her to think she is made of rubber or diving off a high diving board. When Betty comes to, she does some quiet research and turns the tables.
This entry uses the format of the famous silent series with BETTY BOOP instead of Koko the Clown.
This one is generally not viewed due to the stereotyped black janitor who is featured here.
In the beginning, he is learning Hypnotism in order to get out of doing his work. He tries in on the pen on the desk which produces Betty Boop.
The Janitor hypnotizes Betty into becoming rubber, and miming a high diving act into a non-existent pool. When the janitor isn't looking, Betty reads up on hypnotism, and turns the tables on the janitor, causing him to work faster.

Max Fleischer (July 19, 1883 -- September 11, 1972) was an American animator, inventor, film director and producer.
Fleischer was a pioneer in the development of the animated cartoon and served as the head of Fleischer Studios. He brought such animated characters as Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Popeye, and Superman to the movie screen and was responsible for a number of technological innovations.
Early life
Born to a Jewish family in Kraków, Poland,[6] then part of the Austrian-Hungarian province of Galicia, Max Fleischer was the second oldest of six children of an Austrian immigrant tailor, William Fleischer. His family emigrated to the USA in 1887 and settled in New York City, where he attended public school; he spent his formative years in Brownsville and Brooklyn. He attended Evening High School, received commercial art training at Cooper Union, and also attended The Mechanics and Tradesman's School. While still in his teens, he worked for The Brooklyn Daily Eagle as an errand boy, and eventually became a cartoonist. It was during this period he met newspaper cartoonist and early animator, John Randolph Bray. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ethel (Essie) Gold on December 25, 1905. Shortly afterward he accepted an illustrator's job for a catalog company in Boston. He returned to New York as Art Editor for Popular Science magazine around 1912; he also wrote books, including one called Noah's Shoes.
The Rotoscope
Fleischer devised a concept to simplify the process of animating movement by tracing frames of live action film. His patent for the Rotoscope was granted in 1915, although Max and his brother Dave Fleischer made their first cartoon using the system in 1914. Extensive use of this technique was made in Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell series for the first five years of the series, which started in 1919 and starred Koko the Clown and Fitz the dog.

Fleischer produced his Inkwell films for the Bray Studios until 1921, when he and younger brothers Dave and Lou established Fleischer Studios (initially named "Out of the Inkwell Films") to produce animated cartoons and short subjects; Max was credited as the producer at the beginning of every cartoon as well. Koko and Fitz remained the stars of the Out of the Inkwell series, which was renamed Inkwell Imps in 1927...
Finding success
In 1928, as film studios made the transition to sound, Fleischer revived the Song Car-Tunes series as Screen Songs, starting with the release of The Sidewalks of New York on February 5, 1929 through Paramount Pictures. Out of the Inkwell Films, Inc. was reorganized as Fleischer Studios in January 1929 following bankruptcy. During this time, Walt Disney was also gaining success with Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies. In August 1929, the silent Inkwell Imps series was replaced with the Talkartoon series, beginning with Noah's Lark. A year into the series, Fitz was renamed "Bimbo" and became the star of the Talkartoon series, starting with the cartoon Hot Dog (1930).
However, in August 1930, a Rubenesque poodle-human hybrid, Bimbo's girlfriend, made her screen debut in Dizzy Dishes, and quickly became Fleischer's biggest star; she would later be named Betty Boop. By 1931, Betty's floppy canine ears had evolved into hoop earrings, and she was transformed into a fully human girl (though she retained her romantic relationship with the dog for several episodes after her transmogrification). By the time of Minnie the Moocher (1932), Betty Boop was in a class of her own, and by August 1932, starting with Stopping the Show, the Talkartoon series was renamed as Betty Boop Cartoons..
Popeye started out as a secondary character in 1929 in the newspaper feature Thimble Theater, and made his film debut in July 1933, introduced in the Betty Boop short Popeye the Sailor.
On May 24, 1941, Paramount initiated takeover of Fleischer's studio...
Later career
After leaving his studio, Fleischer was brought in as head of the Animation Department for the industrial film company, The Jam Handy Organization. While there he supervised the technical and cartoon animation departments, producing training films for the Army and Navy and was also involved with research and development for the war effort...
Fleischer, along with his wife Essie, moved to the Motion Picture Country House in 1967. He died from heart failure on September 11, 1972...

"A Cartoon Travesty of THE RAVEN by Edgar Allen Poe", released by the Fleischer Studios (distributed by Paramount) on April 3, 1942, was the last of the two-reeler animated shorts produced by that studio, and among the last of the cartoons created by
the folks behind the "Out of the Inkwell" classics and such characters as Koko the Clown, Bimbo, Grampy, and Betty Boop, as well as Popeye the Sailor and, near the end of the studio's run, their celebrated series of "Superman" cartoons. By late 1942, Max and Dave Fleischer were no longer working together, and neither was working for the studio that bore their name. It really was the end of an era for what had been one of Disney's keenest competitors.
Produced by Dave Fleischer, directed by Tom Johnson, and featuring the voices of Jack Mercer, Pinto Colvig and (as the narrator) Sam Parker (the voice of Gulliver in Fleischer's 1939 full-length feature,"Gulliver's Travels").
As with so many of the Fleischer cartoons, this one was part of Paramount' pre-1950s cartoon library sold to U.M.&M.; TV Corp., which in turn was acquired by National Telefilm Associates (NTA). The results of that shuffling about were the modified credits on cartoons, replacing or simply blacking out the original logos and copyright notices, and the eventual failure to renew those copyrights by NTA, placing "Raven" and many
other Fleischer cartoons in public domain.

Bimbo (Fleischer Studios)
Bimbo is a fictional character, a cartoon dog created by Fleischer Studios. He first appeared in the Out of the Inkwell series and was originally named Fitz.
History
Bimbo was initially inspired by animation director Dick Huemer's work on Mutt and Jeff, who, when working on the Out of the Inkwell series, decided to give protagonist Koko the Clown a canine companion.
Bimbo had later become the star of Fleischer's Talkartoons series, making his first appearance as Bimbo in Hot Dog (1930), though Bimbo's design wouldn't become standardized until around 1931. Bimbo was relegated to a supporting character when his girlfriend Betty Boop became a more popular (and human) character (Betty Boop was originally a dog). The Talkartoons series became the Betty Boop series in 1932.
He appeared in Fleischer cartoons formally as Bimbo from 1930 to 1933, when he was eliminated from Betty's series by the Production Code censorship laws, since a dog with a human girlfriend gave implications of bestiality.

Out of the Inkwell was a major animated series of the silent era produced by Max Fleischer from 1918 to 1929. The series was the result of three short experimental films that Max Fleischer independently produced in the period of 1914--1916 to demonstrate his invention, the Rotoscope, which was a device consisting of a film projector and easel used as an aid for achieving realistic movement for animated cartoons. At the Fleischer studio, a black janitor, learning to hypnotize, conjures Betty Boop out of the inkwell and tries some suggestions on her. But two can play at that game...
A black porter is dusting Max's desk while reading up on hypnotism. He causes Max's pen to spin around on its own and produce Betty. The porter then exerts his will on Betty, causing her to think she is made of rubber or diving off a high diving board. When Betty comes to, she does some quiet research and turns the tables.
This entry uses the format of the famous silent series with BETTY BOOP instead of Koko the Clown.
This one is generally not viewed due to the stereotyped black janitor who is featured here.
In the beginning, he is learning Hypnotism in order to get out of doing his work. He tries in on the pen on the desk which produces Betty Boop.
The Janitor hypnotizes Betty into becoming rubber, and miming a high diving act into a non-existent pool. When the janitor isn't looking, Betty reads up on hypnotism, and turns the tables on the janitor, causing him to work faster.

Max Fleischer (July 19, 1883 -- September 11, 1972) was an American animator, inventor, film director and producer.
Fleischer was a pioneer in the development of the animated cartoon and served as the head of Fleischer Studios. He brought such animated characters as Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, Popeye, and Superman to the movie screen and was responsible for a number of technological innovations.
Early life
Born to a Jewish family in Kraków, Poland,[6] then part of the Austrian-Hungarian province of Galicia, Max Fleischer was the second oldest of six children of an Austrian immigrant tailor, William Fleischer. His family emigrated to the USA in 1887 and settled in New York City, where he attended public school; he spent his formative years in Brownsville and Brooklyn. He attended Evening High School, received commercial art training at Cooper Union, and also attended The Mechanics and Tradesman's School. While still in his teens, he worked for The Brooklyn Daily Eagle as an errand boy, and eventually became a cartoonist. It was during this period he met newspaper cartoonist and early animator, John Randolph Bray. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ethel (Essie) Gold on December 25, 1905. Shortly afterward he accepted an illustrator's job for a catalog company in Boston. He returned to New York as Art Editor for Popular Science magazine around 1912; he also wrote books, including one called Noah's Shoes.
The Rotoscope
Fleischer devised a concept to simplify the process of animating movement by tracing frames of live action film. His patent for the Rotoscope was granted in 1915, although Max and his brother Dave Fleischer made their first cartoon using the system in 1914. Extensive use of this technique was made in Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell series for the first five years of the series, which started in 1919 and starred Koko the Clown and Fitz the dog.

Fleischer produced his Inkwell films for the Bray Studios until 1921, when he and younger brothers Dave and Lou established Fleischer Studios (initially named "Out of the Inkwell Films") to produce animated cartoons and short subjects; Max was credited as the producer at the beginning of every cartoon as well. Koko and Fitz remained the stars of the Out of the Inkwell series, which was renamed Inkwell Imps in 1927...
Finding success
In 1928, as film studios made the transition to sound, Fleischer revived the Song Car-Tunes series as Screen Songs, starting with the release of The Sidewalks of New York on February 5, 1929 through Paramount Pictures. Out of the Inkwell Films, Inc. was reorganized as Fleischer Studios in January 1929 following bankruptcy. During this time, Walt Disney was also gaining success with Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies. In August 1929, the silent Inkwell Imps series was replaced with the Talkartoon series, beginning with Noah's Lark. A year into the series, Fitz was renamed "Bimbo" and became the star of the Talkartoon series, starting with the cartoon Hot Dog (1930).
However, in August 1930, a Rubenesque poodle-human hybrid, Bimbo's girlfriend, made her screen debut in Dizzy Dishes, and quickly became Fleischer's biggest star; she would later be named Betty Boop. By 1931, Betty's floppy canine ears had evolved into hoop earrings, and she was transformed into a fully human girl (though she retained her romantic relationship with the dog for several episodes after her transmogrification). By the time of Minnie the Moocher (1932), Betty Boop was in a class of her own, and by August 1932, starting with Stopping the Show, the Talkartoon series was renamed as Betty Boop Cartoons..
Popeye started out as a secondary character in 1929 in the newspaper feature Thimble Theater, and made his film debut in July 1933, introduced in the Betty Boop short Popeye the Sailor.

the folks behind the "Out of the Inkwell" classics and such characters as Koko the Clown, Bimbo, Grampy, and Betty Boop, as well as Popeye the Sailor and, near the end of the studio's run, their celebrated series of "Superman" cartoons. By late 1942, Max and Dave Fleischer were no longer working together, and neither was working for the studio that bore their name. It really was the end of an era for what had been one of Disney's keenest competitors.
Produced by Dave Fleischer, directed by Tom Johnson, and featuring the voices of Jack Mercer, Pinto Colvig and (as the narrator) Sam Parker (the voice of Gulliver in Fleischer's 1939 full-length feature,"Gulliver's Travels").
As with so many of the Fleischer cartoons, this one was part of Paramount' pre-1950s cartoon library sold to U.M.&M.; TV Corp., which in turn was acquired by National Telefilm Associates (NTA).
