After decades of neglect, high-rise hotels are crumbling in the fenced-off suburb and visitors are banned.
Stunning footage captured by a drone has revealed the shocking decay of a once-thriving beach resort that has been transformed into a ghost town.
In its heyday, Varosha, a suburb of Famagusta, Cyprus, was a glamorous retreat that lured the rich and famous, including Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot, thanks to its idyllic beach and modern amenities.
But it was abandoned by its 40,000 inhabitants after the Mediterranean island country was invaded by Turkish troops, who continue to occupy Varosha to this day, following a Greek Cypriot coup in 1974.
Now in ruins, former residents and visitors are barred from entering the eerie resort, which is surrounded by a fence that extends into the sea to keep people out.
After decades of neglect, high-rise hotels and apartments, restaurants and residences are crumbling, and the land has been reclaimed by overgrown vegetation, although the untouched beach and crystal-clear water look as inviting as ever.
Hotels with broken windows line the beach, streets are deserted, signs forbid photographs and video footage, and Turkish soldiers stand guard.
Varosha is used to be glorious and very popular resort in Cyprus. Now, because of turkish occupation, it resides as a ghost town and restricted military area - reminding of the world's fragility.

Unlike other parts of the non government controlled areas of Cyprus, the Varosha section of Famagusta was fenced off by the Turkish army immediately after being captured and still remains in that state today. The Greek Cypriots who had fled from Varosha were not allowed to return, and journalists are banned. It has been frozen in time with department stores and hotels empty but still fully equipped. Swedish journalist Jan-Olof Bengtsson, who visited the Swedish UN battalion in Famagusta port and saw the sealed-off part of the town from the battalion's observation post, called the area a 'ghost town'.

Varosha Ghost Town - Famagusta - Cyprus.
Varosha is a ghost town and a southern section of the Cypriot city of Famagusta. Varosha is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus. Prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it was the modern tourist area of Famagusta. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since.
In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, Varosha was not only the number one tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and was a favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot.
The main features Varosha included John F Kennedy Avenue, a street which ran from close to the port of Famagusta, through Varosha and parallel to Glossa beach. Along JFK Avenue, there were many well known high rise hotels including the King George Hotel, The Asterias Hotel, The Grecian Hotel, The Florida Hotel, and The Argo Hotel which was the favourite hotel of Elizabeth Taylor. The Argo Hotel is located near the end of JFK Avenue, looking towards Protaras and Fig Tree Bay. Another major street in Varosha was Leonidas, a major street that came off JFK Avenue and headed west towards Vienna Corner. Leonidas was a major shopping and leisure street in Varosha, consisting of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.
As nobody has inhabited the area and no repairs have been carried out, all of the buildings continue to fall apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen nesting on the deserted beaches.

A guided tour by Mr John to Famagusta (Varosha) and Ghost city in Cyprus.In 1974 the turkish military took controll over the northern part of Cyprus. Many greek cypriots had to leave to the southern parts of the island. Thus a big part of Famagusta is empty and forbidden area, divided by the green line. Only used for military training. One part of this is the big tourist complex, hotels that used to have almost 7000 beds together. Now totally empty, close to the most beautifull beaches on Cyprus. Some new hotells had been built. So today there are people at the beaches.
At the tour we also visited the old city who in older time had more than 300 churches.
Mr John, our guide lived in Famagusta when military took controll. He took us to places no other guide would know of. Not needed to say, but we had a wonderful day.

Famagusta /ˌfæməˈɡʊstə, ˌfɑː-/ (Greek: Αμμόχωστος [locally [aˈmːoxostos]]; Turkish: Mağusa [mɑˈɰusɑ], or Gazimağusa [gɑːzimɑˈɰusɑ] ) is a city on the east coast of Cyprus. De facto, it is the capital of the Gazimağusa District of Northern Cyprus. It is located east of Nicosia, and possesses the deepest harbour of the island. During the medieval period (especially under the maritime republics of Genoa and Venice), Famagusta was the island's most important port city, and a gateway to trade with the ports of the Levant, from where the Silk Road merchants carried their goods to Western Europe.
Name
In antiquity, the town was known as Arsinoe (Ancient Greek: Ἀρσινόη), after Arsinoe II of Egypt, and was mentioned by that name by Strabo. In Greek it is called Ammochostos (Αμμόχωστος), meaning "hidden in [the] sand". This name developed into Famagusta (originally Famagouste in French and Famagosta in Italian), used in Western European languages, and to its Turkish name, Mağusa. In Turkish, the city is also called Gazimağusa; Gazi means veteran in Turkish, and the city has been officially awarded with the title after 1974 (compare Gaziantep). In Armenian, Famagusta is called Ֆամակուսթա Famagust'a. The old town is nicknamed "the city of 365 churches" owing to a legend that at its peak, Famagusta boasted one church for each day of the year.

Stunning footage captured by a drone has revealed the shocking decay of a once-thriving beach resort that has been transformed into a ghost town.
In its heyday, Varosha, a suburb of Famagusta, Cyprus, was a glamorous retreat that lured the rich and famous, including Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot, thanks to its idyllic beach and modern amenities.
But it was abandoned by its 40,000 inhabitants after the Mediterranean island country was invaded by Turkish troops, who continue to occupy Varosha to this day, following a Greek Cypriot coup in 1974.
Now in ruins, former residents and visitors are barred from entering the eerie resort, which is surrounded by a fence that extends into the sea to keep people out.
After decades of neglect, high-rise hotels and apartments, restaurants and residences are crumbling, and the land has been reclaimed by overgrown vegetation, although the untouched beach and crystal-clear water look as inviting as ever.
Hotels with broken windows line the beach, streets are deserted, signs forbid photographs and video footage, and Turkish soldiers stand guard.

Swedish journalist Jan-Olof Bengtsson, who visited the Swedish UN battalion in Famagusta port and saw the sealed-off part of the town from the battalion's observation post, called the area a 'ghost town'.

Varosha is a ghost town and a southern section of the Cypriot city of Famagusta. Varosha is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus. Prior to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, it was the modern tourist area of Famagusta. Its inhabitants fled during the invasion, and it has remained abandoned ever since.
In the 1970s, Famagusta was the number one tourist destination in Cyprus. To cater to the increasing number of tourists, many new high-rise buildings and hotels were constructed. During its heyday, Varosha was not only the number one tourist destination in Cyprus, but between 1970 and 1974, it was one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and was a favourite destination of celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot.
The main features Varosha included John F Kennedy Avenue, a street which ran from close to the port of Famagusta, through Varosha and parallel to Glossa beach. Along JFK Avenue, there were many well known high rise hotels including the King George Hotel, The Asterias Hotel, The Grecian Hotel, The Florida Hotel, and The Argo Hotel which was the favourite hotel of Elizabeth Taylor. The Argo Hotel is located near the end of JFK Avenue, looking towards Protaras and Fig Tree Bay. Another major street in Varosha was Leonidas, a major street that came off JFK Avenue and headed west towards Vienna Corner. Leonidas was a major shopping and leisure street in Varosha, consisting of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs.
As nobody has inhabited the area and no repairs have been carried out, all of the buildings continue to fall apart. Nature is reclaiming the area, as metal corrodes, windows break, and plants work their roots into the walls and pavement. Sea turtles have been seen nesting on the deserted beaches.

The Icon Museum and old Orthodox John Cathedral form the frame of the central Macarius Square. The massive construction of the Napa-Ayia Church dominates the old town and the pedestrian zone provides interesting shops, restaurants and street cafes. The city is changing more and more into a modern city. Outside Platanistasa, the Stavros Tou Agiasmati Church stands alone within the wooded mountain scenery. In Orthodox Christianity the figures were meant to depict images of a true archetype of a divine and holy nature, not one created by man. In Lagoudera a large barn roof protects the Panagia Tou Araka Church in which once gathered the first people beyond Palestine and the Holy Land, who discovered the Holy Gospel. Cyprus is an island world with fascinating landscapes and unique historical treasures and a place where summer lasts for ever.

Whilst three of the councils have agreed to sign but have not yet done so, one has indicated that they will take the water when they feel there is a high Famagusta and Morphou local councils have been receiving the water for a couple of weeks. A recent rally organised by the Turkish Cypriot Touring and Automobile Association KKTOK caused quite a stir when it was announced that the 3.5-km historic moat in Famagusta would be used during the race. Both the Green Peace Movement and Famagusta Initiative called for the rally to be either called off or moved to another location as the moat and trenches were part of the cultural heritage of the town ... ....
