An Artistic Director is the executive of an arts organization, particularly in a theatre company, who handles the organization's artistic direction. They are generally a producer and director, but not in the sense of a mogul, since the organization is generally a non-profit organization. The Artistic Director of a theatre company is the individual with the overarching artistic control of the theatre's production choices, directorial choices, and overall artistic vision. In smaller theatres, the Artistic Director may be the founder of the theatre and the primary director of its plays. In larger non-profit theatres (often known in Canada and the United States as regional theatres) the Artistic Director may be appointed by the board of directors.
The Artistic Director of a theatre is similar to the Musical Director of a symphony, the primary person responsible for planning a theatre's season. The Artistic Director's responsibilities can include but are not limited to choosing the material staged in a season, the hiring of creative/production personnel (such as directors), and other theatre management tasks. He or she may also direct productions for the company. Artistic Directors work closely with the general manager of the theatre, and contribute the artistic evaluation of projects and productions to be included in promotional, funding, and press materials. An Artistic Director also functions as a resource for the directors who are working to mount productions at the theatre and can provide support, counsel, and/or artistic input where requested. The Artistic Director may be called to assume the production should the director become unable to complete his/her duties. Artistic directors are frequently regarded as the artistic representatives of theatre companies and are often required to speak about their theatre to the press. In the United States, Artistic Directors often have fundraising responsibilities as well.
Robert Battle (born August 28, 1972 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA) is a dancer, choreographer and the Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Originally from the Liberty City community of Miami, Florida, Battle was raised by his great uncle Willie Horne and his cousin Dessie Horne in economically poor living conditions. He studied at the New World School of the Arts before graduating from the Juilliard School, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1994.
Upon graduation from Juilliard, he joined the Parsons Dance Company. He founded his own Battleworks Dance Company in 2001.
Battle was named one of the Masters of African American Choreography by the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2005.
In 2015 Battle was named a Ford Foundation Art of Change Fellow.
He began the directorship on July 1, 2011, and is its third director since the company's 1958 inception. When receiving the position Battle says, "I hope to be worthy of this tremendous responsibility that I've been given, and to honor it in the only way Alvin Ailey would have accepted: by keeping it now, alive and moving forward". Although Battle was never formally part of the Ailey company prior to his appointment, making him the first artistic director with no direct connection to the company or to Ailey himself, he contributed a number of works to the company's repertoire, and had long been recognized as the anointed successor to Judith Jamison. As Jamison was in an interview she says, "that Battle's choreography has the ability to draw audiences into his work, and it reminds her of Alvin". He served several terms as artist-in-residence with Ailey.

From finding dancers to scheduling rehearsals, from writing grants to hiring staff, directors deal with all the day-to-day needs of a performance group. The extra work, however, gives directors more control over the artistic achievements of the company. An energetic dance by Helen Pickett, choreographed to music by Bernd Sippel, illustrates why directors Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan find their job rewarding.
