July
24th, 2014:
Salt Lake City, Utah
Deseret News Classic Races:
Marathon, 1/2
Marathon, 10K, 5K races. Our family did the
1/2 Marathon:
13.1 miles. All races totaled around 9,000 participants.
The 24th of July is one of the biggest summer celebrations in
Utah, huge televised
parade, celebrating the arrival of the
Mormon pioneers in Utah. A desert where nothing grew.
7 of us did the
Half Marathon, 13.1 miles:
Papa O,
Momma O, 2 of our children with spouses: Davey/April,
James/
Joanna and Julianne. Started in the
Salt Lake mountains,
The Half Marathon started up
Emigration Canyon, at the foot of
Little Mountain, following the path of the Mormon pioneers, and finishing on the parade route with over
100,000 fans cheering, early in the morning.
It was a hot muggy day, 80-90 degrees, challenging but beautiful course with a major headwind that interfered the downhill pace. Little Mountain, 7,000 ft, Salt Lake, about 4,
500 ft
Momma O vlogs, and narrates while running. Momma O, is a barefoot runner, but had never run this distance barefoot, she had to take off her shoes 1/2 way, because of blisters from the shoes, and did the last 6 or so miles barefoot. Papa O, at 74 was one of the oldest in the race and had his name announced. What a blessing to be able to be with family members in this race.
