Kingston is Jamaica's capital and largest city. Nowadays it's unfortunately most known for having one of the top 5 city murder rates in the world. But as always I knew there was more to the story than that. I wanted to visit Trench Town, the neighborhood where Bob Marley grew up. Surely there were more than just gangbangers living there? There was only one way to find out.

Jamaica: On the surface, it’s a tropical island paradise in the Caribbean. But, in spite of all the tranquility, Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The reason: Ghettos! And the worst of all of them: Mountain View. Anyone who sets foot here risks their life. Deadly gun battles and gang wars are just part of the daily routine. The many small communities here are in a state of constant war.
The most infamous of all the gangs: South Clan! Drugs, alcohol, weapons. Everything always close at hand. The criminals make their money with contract killing, extortion, and kidnapping. Around five hundred people live in the South Clan community. Evil and his men say they protect the people here – from the bad guys. Their favorite weapons are the Glock nine millimeter, Beretta M-9 and the M-15 semiautomatic. All lightweight and deadly.
The Mountain View slum is a refuge for the poorest of the poor. Many seek solace in alcohol and marijuana. What rules here is primarily unemployment, miserable living conditions, hopelessness. Particularly for single mothers, there is usually only one way out: prostitution! Every day young women sell their bodies on the street.
A special police unit tries to end all this and to shut down the gangs. Four men notorious for their prowess. The special unit can't rely on any tips from ghetto residents. Because nobody talks here. There is only one language – which means don't talk, shoot!
Mountain View, Kingston is one of the most dangerous no-go zones in the world… Those who grow up here, barely stand a chance!

Jamaica
Jamaica (
i/dʒəˈmeɪkə/) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.
Previously inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Named Santiago, it remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered the island and renamed it Jamaica. Under British rule, Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with its plantation economy highly dependent on slaves imported from Africa, followed later by Chinese and Indian indentured labour. All slaves were fully emancipated in 1838, with independence from the United Kingdom achieved on 6 August 1962.

Jamaica (song)
"Jamaica" is a song by Canadian rock group Bachman–Turner Overdrive that appears on the 1979 album Rock n' Roll Nights. It features Jim Clench on lead vocals. It was written by well-known songwriter Jim Vallance. It was released as a single but did not chart. The song, along with "Heartaches," was played live on American Bandstand in February 1979 to support the Rock n' Roll Nights album release.
Using different lyrics, Rick Springfield remade the song under the title "Kristina" on his 1982 album Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet.

Jamaica : A Novel (2007) is a novel by Australian author Malcolm Knox. It won the Colin Roderick Award in 2007, and was shortlisted for the Fiction category of the 2008 Prime Minister's Literary Awards.
Plot summary
A group of 6 Australian friends - white, middle-aged males - combine to compete in a marathon relay swim in treacherous waters off Jamaica. But even before the race begins fractures appear in the relationships, with drug-taking, hidden secrets and personal crises coming to dominate.

Jamaica: On the surface, it’s a tropical island paradise in the Caribbean. But, in spite of all the tranquility, Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The reason: Ghettos! And the worst of all of them: Mountain View. Anyone who sets foot here risks their life. Deadly gun battles and gang wars are just part of the daily routine. The many small communities here are in a state of constant war.
The most infamous of all the gangs: South Clan! Drugs, alcohol, weapons. Everything always close at hand. The criminals make their money with contract killing, extortion, and kidnapping. Around five hundred people live in the South Clan community. Evil and his men say they protect the people here – from the bad guys. Their favorite weapons are the Glock nine millimeter, Beretta M-9 and the M-15 semiautomatic. All lightweight and deadly.
The Mountain View slum is a refuge for the poorest of the poor. Many seek solace in alcohol and marijuana. What rules here is primarily unemployment, miserable living conditions, hopelessness. Particularly for single mothers, there is usually only one way out: prostitution! Every day young women sell their bodies on the street.
A special police unit tries to end all this and to shut down the gangs. Four men notorious for their prowess. The special unit can't rely on any tips from ghetto residents. Because nobody talks here. There is only one language – which means don't talk, shoot!
Mountain View, Kingston is one of the most dangerous no-go zones in the world… Those who grow up here, barely stand a chance!

When people think about Jamaica and drugs, they tend to think of weed, Rastafari and reggae music.
The reality is that Jamaica sits in the middle of the cocaine corridor between South America and the US, and the violent gang wars and billions of dollars this trade generates have fundamentally shaped its history.
This violence is inseparable from Jamaica’s politics, creating a uniquely Jamaican kind of gang boss – the Don. And no Don was bigger than Christopher “Dudus” Coke. This is the story of Dudus, the drug lord who became the secret “President” of Jamaica.

Abeng (Ä běng) is a novel related to Maroons, published in 1984 by Michelle Cliff. It is a semi-fictional autobiographical novel about a mixed-race Jamaican girl named Clare Savage growing up in the 1950s. It explores the historical repression resulting from British imperialism in Jamaica. Facts regarding imperialism of the island are dispersed throughout the narrative, as well as facts about slavery in Jamaica and Jamaican folklore. It is emphasized that the protagonists are generally unaware of these facts, which often serve to reveal the brutal nature of both slavery and imperialism. In this way Cliff reveals her intentions for the book. It is a piece of revisionist literature meant to challenge the mainstream narrative of Jamaican history. The character Clare Savage would return in Michelle Cliff's next novel, No Telephone to Heaven.

Around five hundred people live in the South Clan community. Evil and his men say they protect the people here – from the bad guys. Their favorite weapons are the Glock nine millimeter, Beretta M-9 and the M-15 semiautomatic. All lightweight and deadly.
The Mountain View slum is a refuge for the poorest of the poor. Many seek solace in alcohol and marijuana. What rules here is primarily unemployment, miserable living conditions, hopelessness. Particularly for single mothers, there is usually only one way out: prostitution! Every day young women sell their bodies on the street.
A special police unit tries to end all this and to shut down the gangs. Four men notorious for their prowess. The special unit can't rely on any tips from ghetto residents. Because nobody talks here. There is only one language – which means don't talk, shoot!
Mountain View, Kingston is one of the most dangerous no-go zones in the world… Those who grow up here, barely stand a chance!

Jamaica
Jamaica (i/dʒəˈmeɪkə/) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.
Previously inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Named Santiago, it remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered the island and renamed it Jamaica. Under British rule, Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with its plantation economy highly dependent on slaves imported from Africa, followed later by Chinese and Indian indentured labour. All slaves were fully emancipated in 1838, with independence from the United Kingdom achieved on 6 August 1962.

Ivorian singer Alpha Blondy and his band The Solar System is regarded as one of the best live acts in the world of Reggae.
Blondy, also referred to as 'The African Bob Marley', broke through with his debut album Jah Glory in 1982 and since then has never left the international stage.
He is also a staunch supporter of African unity, religious tolerance and world peace and to this end is known to sing to Muslim audiences in Hebrew and in Arabic to Israelis. Some of his best-known songs include "Cocody Rock," "Jerusalem," and "Apartheid Is Nazism."

Abeng (Ä běng) is a novel related to Maroons, published in 1984 by Michelle Cliff. It is a semi-fictional autobiographical novel about a mixed-race Jamaican girl named Clare Savage growing up in the 1950s. It explores the historical repression resulting from British imperialism in Jamaica. Facts regarding imperialism of the island are dispersed throughout the narrative, as well as facts about slavery in Jamaica and Jamaican folklore. It is emphasized that the protagonists are generally unaware of these facts, which often serve to reveal the brutal nature of both slavery and imperialism. In this way Cliff reveals her intentions for the book. It is a piece of revisionist literature meant to challenge the mainstream narrative of Jamaican history. The character Clare Savage would return in Michelle Cliff's next novel, No Telephone to Heaven.

Description: Jamaica Inn is a novel by the English writer Daphne du Maurier, first published in 1936. It was later made into a film, also called Jamaica Inn, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is a period piece set in Cornwall in 1820. It was inspired by du Maurier's 1930 stay at the real Jamaica Inn, which still exists and is a pub in the middle of Bodmin Moor. The plot follows a group of murderous wreckers who run ships aground, kill the sailors and steal the cargo.
