Kids' imaginations will soar in a variety of planes, trains and automobiles during the eighth annual Touch-A-Truck event in Salem on Saturday.

The festival, dedicated to letting children explore different modes of transportation, boasts a variety of vehicles, from boats to vans to fire trucks.

This year, Roanoke County has added a few new attractions to the already popular affair. A 100-year-old Peerless steam engine tractor built in 1915 will join the lineup, along with two race cars. Vehicles representing classic television and cinema will be in attendance, including a Batmobile complete with Batman, the A-Team van, a reproduction of "Star Wars" droid R2-D2 and a 1977 Rolls Royce once owned by "Bonanza" actor Lorne Greene. Adding the allure of air travel will be a sailplane glider.

Vehicles making there way back to this year's event are a monster truck, a bucket truck, tractors from 1942 and 1950 and a 1968 Ford Mustang. Also joining these veterans are several race cars, a battery route truck, Roanoke County's SWAT vehicle and many other vehicles from Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

It's not just for the kids, though. The DMV2Go mobile unit will be on-site to help attendees renew their ID cards, purchase hunting and fishing licenses and apply for or renew their driver's licenses.

Other activities will be provided for youngsters, including the fireman's foam pit, a petting zoo, food vendors and a magician. Parents are encouraged to bring their camera for the multitude of photo opportunities.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 777-6326 or visit www.roanokecountyparks.com.
