South Downs second birthday celebrated in film

A touching personal tale about a young man and his dog has won first prize and £500 in 'My South Downs' a short film competition celebrating the second anniversary of the South Downs National Park.
In his film 'Up on the Downs' Jason Eade uses a creative mixture of film and animation to tell the story of his dog's recovery from a car accident and how much they now both enjoy their daily walks in the South Downs National Park.
The judges -- who included Downton Abbey star, Hugh Bonneville; Emily Kyriakides, programme producer from leading South East digital agency Lighthouse; acclaimed producer and Projects Manager for Wired Sussex, Rebecca Watkin; South Downs National Park Authority Member, Jo Carr; and Amanda Elmes, South Downs lead for Learning and Outreach -- unanimously agreed that Jason's film was the entry that best fit the brief of 'telling the story of what the South Downs National Park means to you'.
Jason Eade said:
"I go up there every day so it's an area I know really well. I thought it would be a good idea to show people my perspective of the South Downs. To be honest I never really expected to win. This is my first film, so I'm really surprised and proud that it got this far."
Competition judge, Hugh Bonneville, said:
"Jason's film was not only beautifully put together; it drew me in to his story. He has found a creative way to express the inspiration and emotion that many of us feel when we're up on the South Downs."
Amanda Elmes, lead for Learning and Outreach for the South Downs National Park and competition judge, said:
"For me Jason's film captured the emotion and closeness of the South Downs, as well as the sense of well-being it can play in the lives of people on its urban edges to be able to step out and experience such an inspiring landscape."
Second prize has been awarded to 'Kayaking @ Cuckmere Haven' by Chris Conil.
The judges were impressed with the technical quality and energy of Chris' film capturing a kayaking adventure at Cuckmere Haven.
Competition judge, Emily Kyriakides, said:
"Chris' film is such a wonderful advert for adventure in this iconic part of the National Park. I was impressed with how he had captured the energy of the activity and then settled into a more contemplative and relaxing mood. He has a very strong technique and kept my interest with a good variety of shots."
Situated in East Sussex, Cuckmere Haven is un-doubtedly one of the most beautiful and inspirational country parks to visit, if you enjoy Kayaking! a great place to meander down the river on a summer afternoon.
In the wake of the current economic climate, support for short films in the UK has gone through a considerable shake up. However, the last year has heralded an upsurge of relevant opportunities for short filmmakers to make, promote and showcase their work on a national and international level.
Chaired by Creative England, this panel discussion provides the arena to hear the key players and decision makers discussing the funding and opportunities currently available for short filmmakers in the UK.

South Downs
The South Downs are a range of chalk hills that extends for about 260 square miles (670 km2) across the south-eastern coastal counties of England from the Itchen Valley of Hampshire in the west to Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, in the east. It is bounded on its northern side by a steep escarpment, from whose crest there are extensive views northwards across the Weald. The South Downs National Park forms a much larger area than the chalk range of the South Downs and includes large parts of the Weald.
The South Downs are characterised by rolling chalk downland with close-cropped turf and dry valleys, and are recognised as one of the most important chalk landscapes in England. The range is one of the four main areas of chalk downland in southern England.
The South Downs are relatively unpopulated compared to South East England as a whole, although in Sussex there has been large-scale urban encroachment onto the chalk downland by major seaside resorts, including most notably Brighton and Hove.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

South Downs National Park

The South Downs National Park is England's newest National Park, having become fully operational on 1 April 2011. The park, covering an area of 1,627 square kilometres (628 sq mi) in southern England, stretches for 140 kilometres (87 mi) from Winchester in the west to Eastbourne in the east through the counties of Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex. The national park covers the chalk hills of the South Downs (which on the English Channel coast form the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head) and a substantial part of a separate physiographic region, the western Weald, with its heavily wooded sandstone and clay hills and vales. The South Downs Way spans the entire length of the park and is the only National Trail that lies wholly within a national park.

Cuckmere Haven
Cuckmere Haven (also known as the Cuckmere Estuary) is an area of flood plains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmere meets the English Channel between Eastbourne and Seaford. The river is an example of a meandering river, and contains several oxbow lakes. It is a popular tourist destination with an estimated 350,000 visitors per year, where they can engage in long walks, or water activities on the river. The beach at Cuckmere Haven is next to the famous chalk cliffs, the Seven Sisters.
At low tide, one can spot ironwork in the sea close to the river mouth. This is the wreck of the Polynesia, a German sailing ship that ran aground in April 1890 west of Beachy Head; it was laden with a cargo of sodium nitrate.
History
The beach was commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. For example, in 1783 two gangs of smugglers (each numbering 200 or 300) overcame officers of the law by weight of numbers and carried away a large quantity of goods.
In the Second World War, the site was studied by the Luftwaffe as they flew missions to identify potential landing sites for the invasion of the UK mainland. As a result, the British constructed a series of counter-landing defences, of which numerous pillboxes, anti-tank obstacles, ditches and tank traps survive.Admiralty scaffolding blocked the inlet, but is now gone. Cuckmere Haven featured heavily in the war effort: at night lights were placed to confuse bombers into thinking they were above Newhaven and an airfield was set up further inland. In addition to the permanent land-based constructions, the river was heavily mined.

A touching personal tale about a young man and his dog has won first prize and £500 in 'My South Downs' a short film competition celebrating the second anniversary of the South Downs National Park.
In his film 'Up on the Downs' Jason Eade uses a creative mixture of film and animation to tell the story of his dog's recovery from a car accident and how much they now both enjoy their daily walks in the South Downs National Park.
The judges -- who included Downton Abbey star, Hugh Bonneville; Emily Kyriakides, programme producer from leading South East digital agency Lighthouse; acclaimed producer and Projects Manager for Wired Sussex, Rebecca Watkin; South Downs National Park Authority Member, Jo Carr; and Amanda Elmes, South Downs lead for Learning and Outreach -- unanimously agreed that Jason's film was the entry that best fit the brief of 'telling the story of what the South Downs National Park means to you'.
Jason Eade said:
"I go up there every day so it's an area I know really well. I thought it would be a good idea to show people my perspective of the South Downs. To be honest I never really expected to win. This is my first film, so I'm really surprised and proud that it got this far."
Competition judge, Hugh Bonneville, said:
"Jason's film was not only beautifully put together; it drew me in to his story. He has found a creative way to express the inspiration and emotion that many of us feel when we're up on the South Downs."
Amanda Elmes, lead for Learning and Outreach for the South Downs National Park and competition judge, said:
"For me Jason's film captured the emotion and closeness of the South Downs, as well as the sense of well-being it can play in the lives of people on its urban edges to be able to step out and experience such an inspiring landscape."
Second prize has been awarded to 'Kayaking @ Cuckmere Haven' by Chris Conil.
The judges were impressed with the technical quality and energy of Chris' film capturing a kayaking adventure at Cuckmere Haven.
Competition judge, Emily Kyriakides, said:
"Chris' film is such a wonderful advert for adventure in this iconic part of the National Park. I was impressed with how he had captured the energy of the activity and then settled into a more contemplative and relaxing mood. He has a very strong technique and kept my interest with a good variety of shots."
Situated in East Sussex, Cuckmere Haven is un-doubtedly one of the most beautiful and inspirational country parks to visit, if you enjoy Kayaking! a great place to meander down the river on a summer afternoon.
