Madeira - a part of Portugal - is an island near the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a mild climate and its main assets are its legendary flowers and natural beauties. Madeira’s name is strongly connected with the wine and a handcraft of the same name. In the center of the Wine Company we can taste and buy this fantastic drink as well as take a look at its history. In the mountain village of Monte lies the last Habsburg royalty, and this is the place where the famous toboggan sleds can be seen. Camacha is famous of its basket makers while Moniz of its cave spa. In Santana the tourists can see many thatched houses so characteristic of the island. The 1800 meters high mountains and the lush flora offer recreation for the hikers, mountaineers, parachutists and bikers. Beside the levadas - watering canals – we can walk through Madeira among the banana plantations, vineyards, sugar cane fields, eucalyptus and laurel forests. The landscape is full of volcanic stones, basalt rocks, deep gorges, black-sanded beaches and mountaintops hardly visible in the mist. Madeira
Madeira (/məˈdɪərə/ mə-DEER-ə or /məˈdɛərə/ mə-DAIR-ə; Portuguese: [mɐˈðejɾɐ] or [mɐˈðɐjɾɐ]) is a Portuguese archipelago located in the north Atlantic Ocean, west and slightly south of Portugal. Its total population was estimated in 2011 at 267,785. The capital of Madeira is Funchal on the main island's south coast.
It is just under 400 kilometres (250 mi) north of Tenerife, Canary Islands. Since 1976, the archipelago has been one of the two Autonomous regions of Portugal (the other being the Azores, located to the northwest). It includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas, administered together with the separate archipelago of the Savage Islands. It is an outermost region of the European Union.
Madeira was claimed by Portuguese sailors in the service of Prince Henry the Navigator in 1419 and settled after 1420. The archipelago is considered to be the first territorial discovery of the exploratory period of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, which extended from 1415 to 1542.

Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Visit Funchal on Madeira Island, Portugal part 1/4
Funchal is not only the capital of the island but also the most inhabited settlement. Suzanne Oveeps, a geographer and a fan of the island writes "besides its pleasant climate and magically beautiful location, it presents several sites, majestic palaces surrounding shay inner courtyards, noble country men hiding in prolific parks. Churches, convents and quite a lot of interesting museums and especially it's been able to preserve its really individual image."
In its markets and shopping streets, the bushel is enormous, its harbor is continuously busy, no stop for even a minute. In the daytime on the terraces of street cafes where the coast of promenades, the invigorating breeze fans our face from the south and in the evening, when sitting on the pubs of the old city. We feel like we already belong here.
Funchal together with its suburbs has nearly 130,000 inhabitants and its only obvious in the evening when its illuminated how big its territory is. Monte is a very interesting settlement, its built right above the capital in the mountain. In the 19th century, many rich people along with some foreigners had their villas here surrounded by huge parks. The congener used to go up to the villa quarter but it was stopped during the World War Two, its bridge and its terminal still exist but today we can get here from the old town by cable rail way.
The center of Monte is Largo de Mante and this small square has a marble well, Monte Virgins Chapel and a street café. Of the square, musicians dressed in national costume often entertain the visitors. Steep stairs lead to the front of Narcisa Seniora de Monte, like so many churches; also this one has a legend that the virgin mother appeared to someone, in this case, a herdsman daughter. Nobody else saw the appearance but the small girl but a Madonna statue was found nearby and above this first a small then a larger and larger church was built which finally received a great honor in 1922.
A real king was buried here, the last Hapsburg ruler, Charles the Fourth. The allied forces vanished the Austrian emperor and Hungarian king to the island. In 1921 he made an unsuccessful attempt to get his throne back and a year later, he died. His wife Queen Zeta settled in Switzerland.

Pirates repeatedly attacked the growing town thus its inhabitants were forced to protect it as best they could. Madeira is famous for its wine which has been exported around the world for hundreds of years and in the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, stored and celebrated. The upper town is considered to be the most vibrant part of the city. The adjoining monastery church is in fine Mudejar style. Its walls are colorfully tiled from top to bottom, which emphasizes the oriental nature of the building. The Jardim Botanico is located on a hillside above Funchal and once belonged to the Reid Family. With more than two thousand exotic plants from all over the world it is a garden of earthly pleasures. Not surprisingly, stunning beauty, pulsating life and the serenity of its charming people have continued to make Funchal a major tourist destination.
