I brought my camera with me so I could share this experience with people who wish to go see this place one day as well. Its a difficult thing to do but I believe it is necessary.

Drone video shows the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp as it is today - 70 years after it was liberated by Soviet troops. The camp in Poland is now maintained as a World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of tourists and survivors every year. Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans during World War II. More than a million people - the vast majority of them Jews - died there between 1940, when it was built, and 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army.
Railway tracks into Auschwitz-Birkenau - Trains filled with victims from throughout occupied Europe arrived at the camp almost every day between 1942 and the summer of 1944.
Ruins of wooden huts at Birkenau - Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) was erected in 1941 solely as a death camp, the wooden huts are now in ruins with only brick fireplaces and chimneys remaining.
Entrance to Auschwitz I -The wrought-iron sign over the entrance bears the words Arbeit Macht Frei - "Work sets you free".
Auschwitz I - The brick-built buildings were the former cavalry barracks of the Polish Army.
Courtyard between blocks 10 and 11 at Auschwitz I - Block 11 was called "the Block of Death" by prisoners. Executions took place between Block 10 and Block 11 and posts in the yard were used to string up prisoners by their wrists.
Auschwitz Birkenau is now a museum run by the Polish Culture Ministry, and a Unesco world heritage site.

Auschwitz concentration camp (German: Konzentrationslager Auschwitz, also KZ Auschwitz [kɔntsɛntʁaˈtsi̯oːnsˌlaːɡɐ ˈʔaʊʃvɪts]) was a network of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination camps built and operated by the Third Reich in Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It consisted of Auschwitz I (the original camp), Auschwitz II–Birkenau (a combination concentration/extermination camp), Auschwitz III–Monowitz (a labor camp to staff an IG Farben factory), and 45 satellite camps.
Auschwitz I was first constructed to hold Polish political prisoners, who began to arrive in May 1940. The first extermination of prisoners took place in September 1941, and Auschwitz II–Birkenau went on to become a major site of the Nazi "Final Solution to the Jewish question". From early 1942 until late 1944, transport trains delivered Jews to the camp's gas chambers from all over German-occupied Europe, where they were killed with the pesticide Zyklon B. At least 1.1 million prisoners died at Auschwitz, around 90 percent of them Jewish; approximately 1 in 6 Jews killed in the Holocaust died at the camp. Others deported to Auschwitz included 150,000 Poles, 23,000 Romani and Sinti, 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war, 400 Jehovah's Witnesses, and tens of thousands of others of diverse nationalities, including an unknown number of homosexuals. Many of those not killed in the gas chambers died of starvation, forced labor, infectious diseases, individual executions, and medical experiments.

The camp in Poland is now maintained as a World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of tourists and survivors every year. Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans during World War II. More than a million people - the vast majority of them Jews - died there between 1940, when it was built, and 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army.
Railway tracks into Auschwitz-Birkenau - Trains filled with victims from throughout occupied Europe arrived at the camp almost every day between 1942 and the summer of 1944.
Ruins of wooden huts at Birkenau - Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) was erected in 1941 solely as a death camp, the wooden huts are now in ruins with only brick fireplaces and chimneys remaining.
Entrance to Auschwitz I -The wrought-iron sign over the entrance bears the words Arbeit Macht Frei - "Work sets you free".
Auschwitz I - The brick-built buildings were the former cavalry barracks of the Polish Army.
Courtyard between blocks 10 and 11 at Auschwitz I - Block 11 was called "the Block of Death" by prisoners. Executions took place between Block 10 and Block 11 and posts in the yard were used to string up prisoners by their wrists.
Auschwitz Birkenau is now a museum run by the Polish Culture Ministry, and a Unesco world heritage site.

5. During the Holocaust, Jewish boxer Salamo Arouch was imprisoned at Auschwitz. He was forced to fight fellow prisoners;
the losers were sent to the gas chambers or shot. He survived over 2 years and 200 fights until the camp was liberated.
6. Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier, volunteered to be imprisoned in Auschwitz in order to gather information, escape
and let the world know about the Holocaust.
7. Bayer, famous for producing aspirin, bought prisoners from Auschwitz to use as research subjects for testing new drugs.
8. About 60 million Reichmarks, equivalent to £125m today, was generated for the Nazi state by slave labour at Auschwitz
during the Holocaust.

May 8, 2012 was a tough day: my program in the morning and early afternoon included a visit to Auschwitz. After more than a one hour's drive from Krakow I arrived at the Auschwitz main camp, a former Polish army barracks with 28 masonry blocks that was converted into a concentration camp by the Nazis in 1940. In the main camp several barracks provide insight into the prisoner's daily life. Block 11 was the prison block with 4 standing cells, 1 starvation cell and 1 dark cell. One block provides material evidence of the Holocaust, including countless empty cans of Zyklon B crystals (the toxic gas used in the gas chambers); tons of human hair (that were processed into blankets and soldiers' uniforms); suitcases, shoes, eyeglasses and prosthetic limbs that had been taken from the deportees.... -

May 8, 2012 was a tough day: my program in the morning and early afternoon included a visit to Auschwitz. After more than a one hour's drive from Krakow I arrived at the Auschwitz main camp, a former Polish army barracks with 28 masonry blocks that was converted into a concentration camp by the Nazis in 1940. In the main camp several barracks provide insight into the prisoner's daily life. Block 11 was the prison block with 4 standing cells, 1 starvation cell and 1 dark cell.
One block provides material evidence of the Holocaust, including countless empty cans of Zyklon B crystals (the toxic gas used in the gas chambers); tons of human hair (that were processed into blankets and soldiers' uniforms); suitcases, shoes, eyeglasses and prosthetic limbs that had been taken from the deportees. Our guide even took us through an intact gas chamber and crematorium. It is virtually impossible to describe the extent of evil that happened here.
The second part of my visit to Auschwitz was to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the much bigger part of the concentration camp located 3 km from the main camp that started operation in 1941. It consisted of countless one-story wooden barracks that held 3-story wooden bunk beds that were each crammed with up to 12 people. Sanitary facilities were virtually non-existent, and the conditions in the barracks were essentially unsurvivable. Most of the victims that arrived here were actually gassed immediately upon arrival.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was a true death factory where about 90% of the 1.1 million victims of Auschwitz were murdered. There were 4 huge crematoria that could each process 1500 corpses a day. That was not enough -- funeral pyres had to burn the additional bodies that could not be processed by the crematoria. The associated gas chambers could murder 2000 people an hour. The crematoria and gas chambers in Auschwitz Birkenau were blown up by the Nazis at the end of the war to destroy evidence. The extent of this murder on an industrial scale is truly staggering. A visit to Auschwitz can only be described as a gut-wrenching experience.
Fortunately the second half of the afternoon of May 8 was focused on a much more pleasant destination: the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine. This salt mine started operation in the 13th century and is one of the oldest in the world . It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978 and is visited by about 1.2 million people a year. The mine has dozens of statues and an entire huge chapel that was carved out of rock salt by the miners. At the end of this informative visit, my friendly guide Agnieszka and I had a pleasant dinner in an underground restaurant, 135 metres below the surface.
