Periya, Kasaragod

Periya is a little township in Kasaragod District, India.

Location

Periya is located between Kasaragod and Kanhangad on National Highway 17. The place has grown in prominence because of a large number of new organizations making Periya their home.

Prominent Organizations

Central University of Kerala is one of 15 universities constituted by the Government of India. They are situated all over India and only one is given to Kerala. The University has a 310 acre campus in Periya.

Navodaya Vidyalaya is a model school run by the Government of India. It is affiliated to CBSE, Newdelhi. Classes are conducted from Grade.VI to Grade XII. It is an autonomous and fully residential facility.

Periya Thambi

Periya Thambi is a 1997 Tamil drama film directed by Chitra Lakshmanan. The film features Prabhu and Nagma in lead roles. The film, produced by Chitra Lakshmanan and Chithra Ramu, had musical score by Deva and was released on 14 January 1997.

Plot

Siva (Prabhu) lives with his father Soundarapandian (Thalaivasal Vijay), a police officer, and his little sister Geetha. Geetha gets engaged and Siva notes that his father will not invite his family to the wedding. Hence, Siva finds out his family's village and goes there. At his father's village, Siva is insulted by his uncle Sankarapandian (Vijayakumar), while his aunt Kamachi (Vadivukkarasi) welcomes him. Soon, Kamachi's daughter Selvi (Nagma) and Siva fall in love with each other. How Siva reconciles his uncle and marries Selvi forms the rest of the story.

Periya Idathu Penn

Periya Idathu Penn (Tamil: பெரிய இடத்துப் பெண்) is a 1963 Tamil language drama film directed by T. R. Ramanna. The film features M. G. Ramachandran, B. Saroja Devi, M. R. Radha and T. R. Rajakumari in lead roles. The film, produced by , had musical score by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy and was released on 10 May 1963. The film was blockbuster, highest grossing film of the year and ran more than 100 days. This movie was remade in Telugu as Sabhash Suri starring NTR and then in Hindi as Jawab starring Jeetendra.

Plot

Murugappan (MGR) is a small time farm labourer who lives with his widowed elder sister Gangamma (T. R. Rajakumari) in a village.

Kaïlasam Pillaival (M. R. Radha) is the zamindar of the village, Sabapathy (S. A. Asokan) and Punitha (Saroja Devi) are his children.

Punitha is studying in college in a nearby town, while Sabapathy is not educated. Like the father, the children are both arrogant about their wealth and try to rule the villagers.

Murugappa tries to question their authority and this leads to frequent clashes with the zamindar's family.

Maruthu Pandiyar

The Marudhu Pandiyar brothers (Periya Marudhu and Chinna Marudhu) ruled Sivagangai, Tamil Nadu towards the end of the 18th century. The Marudhu brothers were the first to issue a proclamation of independence from the colonial British rule from Trichy Thiruvarangam Temple, Tamil Nadu on 10 June 1801, more than 56 years before what is generally said to be the First War of Indian Independence which broke out mainly in Northern India in the year

Childhood

The Marudhu brothers were the sons of Udayar servai alias Mookiah Palaniappan and Anandayer alias Ponnathal.Marudhu Pandiyar, the Elder was born on 15.12.1748 in a small hamlet called Narikkudi near Aruppukkottai in then Ramnad principal state (now Virudhunagar district). In 1753 the younger Marudhu Pandiyar was born in Ramnad. Their father, Udayar Thevar, as the General in the Ramnad state military and he shifted his family to Virudhunagar from Narikkudi.

Early life

The Marudhu brothers were trained in native martial arts at Surankottai which traditionally served as a training centre for the Ramnad state army.
