Hugo Haas (18 February 1901 – 1 December 1968) was a Czech film actor, director and writer. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1926 and 1962, as well as directing 20 films between 1933 and 1962.
He was born in Brno, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), and died in Vienna, Austria from complications of asthma. His brother Pavel Haas was a noted composer who died at Auschwitz in 1944.
Haas began acting as a character actor in American films during the mid-1940s. In 1951 he launched a successful if unacclaimed career as a film director in Hollywood with a string of B movie melodramas, usually starring blonde actresses in the role of a predatory mantrap. Haas usually cast himself as the male lead in the films although the female role almost always dominated the storyline and was usually exclusively promoted on film posters. His work also includes a touching human drama, The Girl on the Bridge (1951) - which he cowrote, directed and starred in - about a kindly watchmaker who after having lost his wife and family in the Holocaust, befriends, marries, and raises a second family with a young woman he saves from suicide.
A rich old man (Haas) marries a low class showgirl (Moore), and she soon after falls for handsome young Vince Edwards (TV's BEN CASEY). They plot to have poor Hugo killed by a hit and run driver, but strangely a twin brother shows up at their door step, making them wonder if he's a twin or the old man returned from the dead. An extra added feature is an appearance by the amazonic Dolores Reed from "Invasion of the Star Creatures". Hit And Run is also known as Cleo Moore's last film she made before turning to selling real estate.
One of Haas' best noir films, this movie has the feel of an old dime paperback. Pickup (1951): Haas is a station agent for the railroads and bags cheap Beverly Michaels who thinks he's got a fortune stashed away in the desert. Alan Nixon is his young assistant and Michaels races after him for some lust and larceny, plotting on the killing of Haas, discussing it out loud in front of him because he's lost his hearing with the most intense case of tinnitus in the history of the cinema. The movie also has a beatnik hobo buddy called The Professor. This is one of Hugo's best and reminded me a lot of pulpy Jim Thompson novels.
"THE OTHER WOMAN" Bit player Sherry Stewart gets miffed when director Walter Darman turns her down after she reads for a small part in his picture. She and her boy friend, Ronnie, devise a plan to lure Darman to her apartment, where she gives him a drugged drink. She tells Darman they had an intimate relationship and blackmails him for 50,000. More than a little distracted by his situation, his wife senses something is wrong and he gets into a violent argument with his father-in-law who owns the production company he works for, and discontinues the picture. Sherry informs Darman that she is going to tell his wife about them. Darman tells his secretary that she is going to work late and is not to be disturbed, set the moviola runnings, and exits by the back door and hot-foots its to Sherrys...

Another of the "Fate and Irony" films from director-writer-producer-actor Hugo Haas but this one has less hair-shirt torment than most of his offerings, although his camera, as usual, lingers provocatively on the contours of the leading lady and, in this case, the leading lady is more than well-contoured. Mary Adams works in a tawdry waterfront restaurant where the owner not only maltreats her, he also cheated her father out of a fortune years ago. The owner acquires $25,000 in an illegal transaction, which Mary promptly steals, hides, confesses her crime and serves a short sentence. Freed, she goes to work in a restaurant owned by Dragomie Damitrod and when he gets into trouble over a gambling debt she offers to help him by telling him where the $25,000 is hidden and she will loan him the...

Pickup was the first self-financed directorial effort by the redoubtable Hugo Haas. The film falls neatly into the pattern followed by virtually all future Haas extravaganzas: A romantic triangle involving a susceptible middle-aged man, a scheming blonde wench, and a handsome hunk. Haas himself plays railroad dispatcher Jan Horak, who succumbs to the charms of zaftig doxy Betty (Beverly Michaels). Upon hearing that Horak has a few thousand dollars salted away, Betty inveigles him into marriage. Soon bored by her new husband, Betty inaugurates an affair with Horak's studdish assistant Steve (Allan Nixon). Because Horak is going deaf, Betty and Steve freely discusses their plans to bump off the old man and abscond with his dough. But Horak isn't quite as hearing-impaired as they think he is....

Paranoia rips through my head
Wonder what it’s like to be dead
Intense hatred all about
Left alone to figure it out
Truth and justice just a joke
Entire system just a hoax
Weakening with insecurity
No such thing as racial purity
Life and death become a game
Live or die it’s all the same
Lost my sense of morality
Got no place in reality
Got no point of reference
Got no religious preference
Must have really lost my mind
Time to leave this world behind
Heard too many lies
Afraid to close my eyes
Just don’t know what’s real
What’s the fucking deal?
Total darkness without a clue
Not much choice what can I do
Used to believe now I don’t
Make a difference you know I won’t
Product of my environment
Won’t live to see retirement
Fight while I’m still young and bold
Probably die before I’m old
With my back against the wall
What to do can’t take a fall
The heaviness is pressing down
Trying to force me to the ground
Can’t give up must somehow win
Can’t go through this hell again
Have to give it one more try
One more time before I die
Heard too many lies
Afraid to close my eyes
Just don’t know what’s real
What’s the fucking deal?
I can’t believe what I see
Only my thoughts are free
