Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever, which is now commonly known as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is a deadly disease that was first identified in 1976. It was discovered in a small village near the Ebola River in Congo, which is why it was called Ebola.
Ebola Virus Disease is a rare disease that is contagious and infects humans and nonhuman primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys. Initially, it was confined in Central Africa but after the latest outbreak it has been spreading widely across several countries.
The origin and cause of the first infection is still unknown, but the research work and obtained evidences indicate that ebola is an animal-borne virus which is reserved in fruit bats. It is also concluded that humans and other primates must have come into contact with bat waste or drool which might have caused the infection. It could have been through ingestion of contaminated food or touching mouth and eyes after having contact with contaminated surfaces.
Causes
The cause of this disease is the Ebola Virus that belongs to the family Filoviridae (Filo-vi- ri-die). Ebola virus has five different species which are Reston ebolavirus, Zaire (Zia-eir) ebolavirus, Taï Forest ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus and Bundibugyo (Bun-di-bug-yo) ebolavirus. Reston ebolavirus is said to be responsible for the ebola disease in apes while the remaining four viruses are responsible for the Ebola Virus Disease in humans. Out of these four species, the most deadly one is the Zaire (Zia- eir) ebolavirus which is the same virus that is involved in the latest outbreak in West Africa, it first appeared in March 2014.

The story is becoming all too common in Monrovia. A sick young woman refused to go to the hospital when health workers asked her, and the entire community, to do so. Now, the woman is dead and many of the community are infected with Ebola. Benno Muchler reports.
Ebola virus disease (EVD), Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) or simply Ebola is a disease of humans and other primates caused by an ebolavirus. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Typically, vomiting, diarrhea and rash follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally.[1]
The virus may be acquired upon contact with blood or other bodily fluids of an infected human or other animal.[1] Spreading through the air has not been documented in the natural environment.Fruit bats are believed to be a carrier and may spread the virus without being affected. Once human infection occurs, the disease may spread between people as well. Male survivors may be able to transmit the disease via semen for nearly two months. To diagnose EVD, other diseases with similar symptoms such as malaria, cholera and other viral hemorrhagic fevers are first excluded. Blood samples are tested for viral antibodies, viral RNA, or the virus itself to confirm the diagnosis.
Outbreak control requires community engagement, case management, surveillance and contact tracing, appropriate laboratory service, and proper disposal of remains through cremation or burial. Prevention includes decreasing the spread of disease from infected animals to humans. This may be done by checking such animals for infection and killing and properly disposing of the bodies if the disease is discovered. Properly cooking meat and wearing protective clothing when handling meat may also be helpful, as are wearing protective clothing and washing hands when around a person with the disease. Samples of bodily fluids and tissues from people with the disease should be handled with special caution.
No specific treatment for the disease is yet available. Efforts to help those who are infected are supportive and include giving either oral rehydration therapy (slightly sweet and salty water to drink) or intravenous fluids.[1] This supportive care improves outcomes. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 25% and 90% of those infected with the virus (average is 50%).EVD was first identified in an area of Sudan that is now part of South Sudan, as well as in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The disease typically occurs in outbreaks in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa. From 1976 (when it was first identified) through 2013, the World Health Organization reported a total of 1,716 cases. The largest outbreak to date is the ongoing 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, which is affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. As of 3 October 2014, 7,497 suspected cases resulting in the deaths of 3,439 have been reported. Efforts are under way to develop a vaccine; however, none yet exists.

Over 90 people have died so far in West Africas Ebola outbreak, which Doctors Without Borders (also known as MSF) is calling "unprecedented." And the deadly disease, reports indicate, is continuing to spread.
Ebola is a frightening disease: It is one of the worlds most lethal viruses, and the CDC ranks it among anthrax and smallpox as a Category A bioterrorism agent. As some have pointed out, however, other diseases are taking a much bigger toll in the developing world. Ebola has killed 1,500 people in total since it was first documented in 1976. But the dramatic nature of Ebola aside, health workers say there are a number of reasons to believe this latest outbreak is particularly concerning:
It is widespread.
The outbreak began in Guinea two months ago, and has since crossed international borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia, where it is so far killed seven people. Now, Mali, another neighboring country, is reporting its first suspected cases as well.
Because Ebola is not airborne — it can only be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or body secretions of someone who is infected — containing it is theoretically simple: health workers need to identify all possible cases and quarantine them. The widespread distribution of the outbreak complicates this, as does the fact that it is being found in urban centers instead of remote, rural areas.
"This is the first time Ebola is detected in Guinea, so the population and the medical staff do not know the disease," Esther Sterk, a tropical medicine adviser for Doctors Without Borders, explained to NPR. At least 11 healthcare workers are among those infected, mostly likely because, as one expert explains, "they did not know what they were dealing with."
There is also a large amount of stigma and fear associated with Ebola, Laurie Garrett, a senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, explained to Bloomberg News. That attitude could cause patients to seek care in hospitals far away from their local communities, further spreading the disease. "If those hospitals are not aware of what is coming," Garrett added, "they will quickly become cauldrons, and spread the virus internally." To help counteract that problem, NPR reports, anthropologists are being flown into Guinea alongside health workers to help them contain the outbreak in a "culturally sensitive and appropriate" way.
The only way to protect people is to keep them from getting it in the first place.
The containment issue is so important because there is no vaccine available to protect people from Ebola; there is also no available treatment or cure. Once contracted, the disease kills about 90 percent of patients.

Spread of the disease through the air between primates, including humans, has not been documented in either laboratory or natural conditions.Semen or breast milk of a person after recovery from EVD may carry the virus for several weeks to months.Fruit bats are believed to be the normal carrier in nature, able to spread the virus without being affected by it. Other diseases such as malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, meningitis and other viral hemorrhagic fevers may resemble EVD. Blood samples are tested for viral RNA, viral antibodies or for the virus itself to confirm the diagnosis.

A viral disease (or viral infection) occurs when an organism's body is invaded by pathogenic viruses, and infectious virus particles (virions) attach to and enter susceptible cells.
Structural characteristics
Basic structural characteristics, such as genome type, virion shape and replication site, generally share the same features among virus species within the same family.
There are five double-stranded DNA families: three are non enveloped (Adenoviridae, Papillomaviridae and Polyomaviridae) and two are enveloped (Herpesviridae and Poxviridae). All of the non-enveloped families have icosahedral capsids.
There is one family of partly double-stranded DNA viruses: Hepadnaviridae. These viruses are enveloped.
There is one family of single-stranded DNA viruses that infect humans: Parvoviridae. These viruses are non-enveloped.

Ebola virus (/ɛˈboʊlə/;EBOV, formerly designated Zaire ebolavirus) is one of five known viruses within the genus Ebolavirus. Four of the five known ebolaviruses, including EBOV, cause a severe and often fatal hemorrhagic fever in humans and other mammals, known as Ebola virus disease (EVD). Ebola virus has caused the majority of human deaths from EVD, and is the cause of the 2013–2015 Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa, which has resulted in at least 28,638 suspected cases and 11,315 confirmed deaths.
Ebola virus and its genus were both originally named for Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), the country where it was first described, and was at first suspected to be a new "strain" of the closely related Marburg virus. The virus was renamed "Ebola virus" in 2010 to avoid confusion. Ebola virus is the single member of the species Zaire ebolavirus, which is the type species for the genus Ebolavirus, family Filoviridae, order Mononegavirales. The natural reservoir of Ebola virus is believed to be bats, particularly fruit bats, and it is primarily transmitted between humans and from animals to humans through body fluids.

Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever, which is now commonly known as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is a deadly disease that was first identified in 1976. It was discovered in a small village near the Ebola River in Congo, which is why it was called Ebola. Ebola Virus Disease is a rare disease that is contagious and infects humans and nonhuman primates such as chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys. Initially, it was confined in Central Africa but after the latest outbreak it has been spreading widely across several countries. The origin and cause of the first infection is still unknown, but the research work and obtained evidences indicate that ebola is an animal-borne virus which is reserved in fruit bats. It is also concluded that humans and other primates must have come into contact with bat waste or drool which might have caused the infection. It could have been through ingestion of contaminated food or touching mouth and eyes after having contact with contaminated surfaces. Causes The cause of this disease is the Ebola Virus that belongs to the family Filoviridae (Filo-vi- ri-die). Ebola virus has five different species which are Reston ebolavirus, Zaire (Zia-eir) ebolavirus, Taï Forest ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus and Bundibugyo (Bun-di-bug-yo) ebolavirus. Reston ebolavirus is said to be responsible for the ebola disease in apes while the remaining four viruses are responsible for the Ebola Virus Disease in humans. Out of these four species, the most deadly one is the Zaire (Zia- eir) ebolavirus which is the same virus that is involved in the latest outbreak in West Africa, it first appeared in March 2014. A sick young woman refused to go to the hospital when health workers asked her, and the entire community, to do so. Now, the woman is dead and many of the community are infected with Ebola. Benno Muchler reports. Ebola virus disease (EVD), Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) or simply Ebola is a disease of humans and other primates caused by an ebolavirus. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Typically, vomiting, diarrhea and rash follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally.[1] The virus may be acquired upon contact with blood or other bodily fluids of an infected human or other animal.[1] Spreading through the air has not been documented in the natural environment.Fruit bats are believed to be a carrier and may spread the virus without being affected. Once human infection occurs, the disease may spread between people as well. Male survivors may be able to transmit the disease via semen for nearly two months. To diagnose EVD, other diseases with similar symptoms such as malaria, cholera and other viral hemorrhagic fevers are first excluded. Blood samples are tested for viral antibodies, viral RNA, or the virus itself to confirm the diagnosis. Outbreak control requires community engagement, case management, surveillance and contact tracing, appropriate laboratory service, and proper disposal of remains through cremation or burial. Prevention includes decreasing the spread of disease from infected animals to humans. This may be done by checking such animals for infection and killing and properly disposing of the bodies if the disease is discovered. Properly cooking meat and wearing protective clothing when handling meat may also be helpful, as are wearing protective clothing and washing hands when around a person with the disease. Samples of bodily fluids and tissues from people with the disease should be handled with special caution. No specific treatment for the disease is yet available. Efforts to help those who are infected are supportive and include giving either oral rehydration therapy (slightly sweet and salty water to drink) or intravenous fluids.[1] This supportive care improves outcomes. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 25% and 90% of those infected with the virus (average is 50%).EVD was first identified in an area of Sudan that is now part of South Sudan, as well as in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The disease typically occurs in outbreaks in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa. From 1976 (when it was first identified) through 2013, the World Health Organization reported a total of 1,716 cases. The largest outbreak to date is the ongoing 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, which is affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. As of 3 October 2014, 7,497 suspected cases resulting in the deaths of 3,439 have been reported. Efforts are under way to develop a vaccine; however, none yet exists. Video by voanews -

And the deadly disease, reports indicate, is continuing to spread. Ebola is a frightening disease: It is one of the worlds most lethal viruses, and the CDC ranks it among anthrax and smallpox as a Category A bioterrorism agent. As some have pointed out, however, other diseases are taking a much bigger toll in the developing world. Ebola has killed 1,500 people in total since it was first documented in 1976. But the dramatic nature of Ebola aside, health workers say there are a number of reasons to believe this latest outbreak is particularly concerning: It is widespread. The outbreak began in Guinea two months ago, and has since crossed international borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia, where it is so far killed seven people. Now, Mali, another neighboring country, is reporting its first suspected cases as well. Because Ebola is not airborne — it can only be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or body secretions of someone who is infected — containing it is theoretically simple: health workers need to identify all possible cases and quarantine them. The widespread distribution of the outbreak complicates this, as does the fact that it is being found in urban centers instead of remote, rural areas. "This is the first time Ebola is detected in Guinea, so the population and the medical staff do not know the disease," Esther Sterk, a tropical medicine adviser for Doctors Without Borders, explained to NPR. At least 11 healthcare workers are among those infected, mostly likely because, as one expert explains, "they did not know what they were dealing with." There is also a large amount of stigma and fear associated with Ebola, Laurie Garrett, a senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, explained to Bloomberg News. That attitude could cause patients to seek care in hospitals far away from their local communities, further spreading the disease. "If those hospitals are not aware of what is coming," Garrett added, "they will quickly become cauldrons, and spread the virus internally." To help counteract that problem, NPR reports, anthropologists are being flown into Guinea alongside health workers to help them contain the outbreak in a "culturally sensitive and appropriate" way. The only way to protect people is to keep them from getting it in the first place. The containment issue is so important because there is no vaccine available to protect people from Ebola; there is also no available treatment or cure. Once contracted, the disease kills about 90 percent of patients. -

The story is becoming all too common in Monrovia. A sick young woman refused to go to the hospital when health workers asked her, and the entire community, to do so. Now, the woman is dead and many of the community are infected with Ebola. Benno Muchler reports.
Ebola virus disease (EVD), Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) or simply Ebola is a disease of humans and other primates caused by an ebolavirus. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain and headaches. Typically, vomiting, diarrhea and rash follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally.[1]
The virus may be acquired upon contact with blood or other bodily fluids of an infected human or other animal.[1] Spreading through the air has not been documented in the natural environment.Fruit bats are believed to be a carrier and may spread the virus without being affected. Once human infection occurs, the disease may spread between people as well. Male survivors may be able to transmit the disease via semen for nearly two months. To diagnose EVD, other diseases with similar symptoms such as malaria, cholera and other viral hemorrhagic fevers are first excluded. Blood samples are tested for viral antibodies, viral RNA, or the virus itself to confirm the diagnosis.
Outbreak control requires community engagement, case management, surveillance and contact tracing, appropriate laboratory service, and proper disposal of remains through cremation or burial. Prevention includes decreasing the spread of disease from infected animals to humans. This may be done by checking such animals for infection and killing and properly disposing of the bodies if the disease is discovered. Properly cooking meat and wearing protective clothing when handling meat may also be helpful, as are wearing protective clothing and washing hands when around a person with the disease. Samples of bodily fluids and tissues from people with the disease should be handled with special caution.
No specific treatment for the disease is yet available. Efforts to help those who are infected are supportive and include giving either oral rehydration therapy (slightly sweet and salty water to drink) or intravenous fluids.[1] This supportive care improves outcomes. The disease has a high risk of death, killing between 25% and 90% of those infected with the virus (average is 50%).EVD was first identified in an area of Sudan that is now part of South Sudan, as well as in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The disease typically occurs in outbreaks in tropical regions of sub-Saharan Africa. From 1976 (when it was first identified) through 2013, the World Health Organization reported a total of 1,716 cases. The largest outbreak to date is the ongoing 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, which is affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Nigeria. As of 3 October 2014, 7,497 suspected cases resulting in the deaths of 3,439 have been reported. Efforts are under way to develop a vaccine; however, none yet exists.

Ebola is a frightening disease: It is one of the worlds most lethal viruses, and the CDC ranks it among anthrax and smallpox as a Category A bioterrorism agent. As some have pointed out, however, other diseases are taking a much bigger toll in the developing world. Ebola has killed 1,500 people in total since it was first documented in 1976. But the dramatic nature of Ebola aside, health workers say there are a number of reasons to believe this latest outbreak is particularly concerning:
It is widespread.
The outbreak began in Guinea two months ago, and has since crossed international borders to Sierra Leone and Liberia, where it is so far killed seven people. Now, Mali, another neighboring country, is reporting its first suspected cases as well.
Because Ebola is not airborne — it can only be transmitted through direct contact with the blood or body secretions of someone who is infected — containing it is theoretically simple: health workers need to identify all possible cases and quarantine them. The widespread distribution of the outbreak complicates this, as does the fact that it is being found in urban centers instead of remote, rural areas.
"This is the first time Ebola is detected in Guinea, so the population and the medical staff do not know the disease," Esther Sterk, a tropical medicine adviser for Doctors Without Borders, explained to NPR. At least 11 healthcare workers are among those infected, mostly likely because, as one expert explains, "they did not know what they were dealing with."
There is also a large amount of stigma and fear associated with Ebola, Laurie Garrett, a senior fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations, explained to Bloomberg News. That attitude could cause patients to seek care in hospitals far away from their local communities, further spreading the disease. "If those hospitals are not aware of what is coming," Garrett added, "they will quickly become cauldrons, and spread the virus internally." To help counteract that problem, NPR reports, anthropologists are being flown into Guinea alongside health workers to help them contain the outbreak in a "culturally sensitive and appropriate" way.
The only way to protect people is to keep them from getting it in the first place.
The containment issue is so important because there is no vaccine available to protect people from Ebola; there is also no available treatment or cure. Once contracted, the disease kills about 90 percent of patients.

Ebola has impacted the world and as of December of 2014 there have been 17,942 reported cases of Ebola. Of the cases reported, there have been 6388 deaths from ebola. It is believed the latest bout of the epidemic started when a 2 year old child came in contact with an infected bat or bat droppings. The first case of an ebola outbreak was recognized in 1976 in Zaire. It was named after a local river in the region. Of the 318 cases reported at that time, there was a 90% mortality rate. Ebola also causes stiffness throughout the body which makes it hard for sick people to move.
Five to nine out of every ten people who get sick with Ebola die.
There is no cure for Ebola, but if people get care quickly from doctors and nurses at a hospital, more of them live. People with Ebola need a lot of fluids to replace fluids lost from diarrhea, vomiting, and bleeding. The most important care is giving them water with a very small amount of salt and sugar in it. This is called oral rehydration. It helps to replace their fluids and blood. It is also important to give medicines in case they get bad blood pressure and blood circulation.
Ebola is caused by infection with a virus of the family Filoviridae, genus Ebolavirus. There are five identified Ebola virus species, four of which are known to cause disease in humans: Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus); Sudan virus (Sudan ebolavirus); Taï Forest virus (Taï Forest ebolavirus, formerly Côte d’Ivoire ebolavirus); and Bundibugyo virus (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). It is believed the latest bout of the epidemic started when a 2 year old child came in contact with an infected bat or bat droppings. The first case of an ebola outbreak was recognized in 1976 in Zaire. It was named after a local river in the region. Of the 318 cases reported at that time, there was a 90% mortality rate. It is thought that the Ebola virus existed for much longer than that.
Currently the motality rate for ebola is around 70%. It is thought that you can catch the disease from direct contact with infected people. Contact is typically through blood, body fluids, diarrhea, or vomit. The three major routes of transmission are: Hospitals, burials/death, community.
The first symtoms of ebola when contacted are similar to malaria, flu, meningitis, pneumonia, and typhoid. Recently, 100 healthcare workers have died of ebola in Sierra Leone.
In total more than 340 have died in the region. Health care workers have a dangerous job, because the epidemic of ebola is extremely dangerous.
If you located in an Ebola outbreak area:
- Use good hygiene. Wash hands with soap and water or use an alcohol type hand sanitizer.
- Avoid handling the deceased. Those who handle the bodies of those who died from the Ebola disease are of high risk.
- Avoid with body fluids. This goes for vomit, blood, diarrhea, etc.
- Avoid contact with bats, non-human primates and their meat, waste and fluids.
Health workers should always do the following:
- Wear persoanl protective gears. Common items are eye protection, gowns, masks and gloves.
- Use proper sterilization methods
- Maintain proper infection control
- Isolate infected patients infected
- Avoid direct contact with the deceased.
