"Blood and Sand" stars a ravishing Sharon Stone in a memorable pre-"Basic Instinct" vamp role.
Previously filmed in 1922 featuring Rudolph Valentino and in 1940 with Tyrone Power, Vicente Blasco Ibanez's mystical bullfight novel Blood & Sand was given a third big-screen treatment in this 1989 Jose Frade Spanish production. In addition to Stone, it casts American actor Christopher Rydell as the bullfighter hero Juan Gallardo. Her role was previously essayed in 1922 by Nita Naldi and in 1940 by Rita Hayworth. The story remains the same: a dirt-poor youth rises to fame and fortune in the bull ring, forgets his roots, cheats on his wife, has a last-minute change of heart, and pays for his sins in grotesque fashion.
The story revolves around the young, talented, and naturally gifted torero Juan Gallardo. Gallardo wants to be popular in bull fighting. His love Carmen has a cousin who has left home with Gallardo for a bullfighting competition. After a bull charges the neophyte Gallardo, his friend intercepts and saves Gallardo at the cost of his own life.
A despondent Gallardo runs away and meets Lady Dona Sol (played by Stone), a beautiful, rich lady, who offers him a job to work her fields. However, Gallardo insists on becoming a superstar in bull fighting in his country, and, on the advice of a security guard, he joins the famous bull fighting trainer, Nacional. Nacional trains and prepares Gallardo for competition.
Turmoil and tragedy ensue as the triangle unfolds...

Blood and Sand (1941 film)
Blood and Sand (1941) is a Technicolor film directed by Rouben Mamoulian, produced by 20th Century Fox, and starring Tyrone Power, Linda Darnell, Rita Hayworth, and Alla Nazimova. It is based on the critical 1908 Spanish novel about bullfighting, Blood and Sand (Sangre y arena), by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. The supporting cast features Anthony Quinn, Lynn Bari, Laird Cregar, J. Carrol Naish, John Carradine and George Reeves.
Rita Hayworth's singing voice was dubbed by Gracilla Pirraga.
There are two earlier versions of Blood and Sand, a 1922 version produced by Paramount Pictures, and starring Rudolph Valentino, and a 1916 version filmed by Blasco Ibáñez himself, with the help of Max André. There is also a 1989 version starring Christopher Rydell and Sharon Stone.
This film was the fourth and last in which Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell worked together, others were; Day-Time Wife (1939); Brigham Young (1940) and The Mark of Zorro (1940).
Plot
As a child Juan Gallardo (Rex Downing – young boy) wants only to become a bullfighter like his dead father. One night he has an argument with the pompous critic Natalio Curro (Laird Cregar) about his father's lack of talent in the bullring. The argument spurs Juan to travel to Madrid and achieve his dreams of success in the bullring. Before leaving he promises his aristocratic sweetheart Carmen Espinosa (Linda Darnell) he will return when he is a success and marry her.
