Stocks regained some of that ground as the day wore on, but the Dow finished with a loss of 588 points, the eighth-worst single-day point decline and the second straight fall of more than 500. What would another recession mean for 2016?
The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 1,000 points when the markets opened on Monday morning, rallied almost all the way back, then petered out again to close down 588 points for the day. What are these points that the Dow is always gaining or losing?
What Does The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) Quote Represent?
So the DJIA is an index that is calculated by taking the stock price of the 30 companies in the Dow and dividing that by the Dow Divisor. The Dow Divisor is 0.132129493 right now.
When people piss you off keep sending their asses this!
https://youtu.be/IkdmOVejUlI
So let's say on a day, 29 of the 30 stock prices stay exactly the same, but stock price of one company's stock goes up one dollar. Then $1 / 0.132129493 = about 7.568. So on that day the Dow would be up 7.568 points.
Flip that, and it means if the Dow goes up one point for the day, then it means that the average price of the 30 stocks in the down went up 13.21 cents.
OK, but how much value does that actually represent? Well, unfortunately the Dow isn't really set up to figure that out very easily. That's because the Dow is not weighted based upon the market capitalization of the companies that comprise it. Therefore, a one point drop in the Dow doesn't equal so many dollars of market valuation, because that it would depend on which company went down in price. If the most valuable went down a dollar, it would be more loss in terms of real value than if the least valuable company went down in price one dollar. But the impact on the index would be the same.

How the Dow is Calculated
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is price-averaged meaning that it is computed by taking the average price of the 30 stocks that comprise the index and dividing that figure by a number called the divisor. The divisor is there to take into account stock splits and mergers which also makes the Dow a scaled average. If the Dow wasn't calculated as a scaled average, the index would decrease whenever a stock split took place. To illustrate this, suppose a stock on the index worth $100 splits is split or divided into two stocks each worth $50. If the administrators did not take into account that there are twice as many shares in that company as before, the DJI would be $50 lower than before the stock split because one share is now worth $50 instead of $100.

(AP) -- U.S. stocks slid again Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average briefly plunging more than 1,000 points in a sell-off that sent a shiver of fear from Wall Street to Main Street. Stocks regained some of that ground as the day wore on, but the Dow finished with a loss of 588 points, the eighth-worst single-day point decline and the second straight fall of more than 500. The slump - part of a global wave of selling touched off by signs of a slowdown in China - triggered worries among Wall Street professionals and among ordinary Americans who have been saving for retirement or a down payment on a house. With the lease on her car up, health insurance worker Deirdre Ralph of Wayne, New Jersey, had planned to get a less pricey vehicle and invest the savings. Now she's having doubts. "That money, I wanted to take and put it toward my retirement," said Ralph, 61. "Should I? Or should I just have a great old time?" The Standard Poor's 500 index also fell sharply shortly after the opening bell, entering "correction" territory - Wall Street jargon for a drop of 10 percent or more from a recent peak. The last market correction was nearly four years ago. The Dow ended up losing 588.47 points, or 3.6 percent, closing at 15,871.35. The SP 500 index slid 77.68 points, or 3.9 percent, to 1,893.21. The Nasdaq composite shed 179.79 points, or 3.8 percent, to 4,526.25. The three indexes are down for the year. "There is a lot of fear in the markets," said Bernard Aw, market strategist at IG. U.S. stocks have been on a bull run for more than six years, after bottoming out in March 2009 in the aftermath of the financial crisis and the Great Recession. The rout began in China last week and continued Monday as the country's main stock index sank 8.5 percent. China concerns aside, U.S. stocks have been primed for a sell-off for several months, said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist and economist for Wells Capital Management. "I've been of the view since late last year that this market is in a vulnerable position," he said. "It's gone almost straight up for six years." Stocks have kept climbing even as corporate earnings growth has slowed. The price-earnings ratio for the SP 500, a measure of how much investors are willing to pay for each dollar of company earnings, climbed as high as 17.2 in March. That was the highest level in at least a decade, according to FactSet. The Dow plummeted 1,089 points Monday within the first four minutes of trading as traders dumped shares. But the fire sale was short-lived. A wave of buying by bargain-hunters cut the Dow's losses by half just five minutes later. The U.S. market slide was broad. The 10 sectors in the SP 500 headed lower, with energy stocks recording the biggest decline, 5.2 percent, amid a continued slump in the price of oil. The sector is down almost 25 percent this year. As scary as the sell-off was, the Dow's decline doesn't even make the list of the Top 10 biggest drops in percentage terms. U.S. Treasurys surged as investors bought less risky assets. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 2.01 percent from 2.04 percent. Oil, commodities and the currencies of many developing countries also tumbled on concerns that a sharp slowdown in China might hurt economic growth around the globe. Crude oil prices closed below 0 a barrel for the first time since early 2009. Gold and silver prices also fell. Worries about a China-fueled global economic slump sent markets overseas lower, as well. In Europe, Germany's DAX fell 4.7 percent, while the CAC-40 in France slid 5.4 percent. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares dropped 4.7 percent. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei fell 4.6 percent, its worst one-day drop since in over 2 1/2 years. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 5.2 percent, Australia's SP ASX/200 slid 4.1 percent and South Korea's Kospi lost 2.5 percent. The Shanghai index suffered its biggest percentage decline in 8 1/2 years. China is facing a slowdown in economic growth, the banking system is short of cash, and investors are pulling money out of the country. 2015 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 1,000 points, its worst weekly performance in approximately four years. On Monday, the index plunged by over 1,000 points early - and closed the day down 588 points. In terms of the number of points lost, Monday August 24th, 2015 was the eighth-worst single-day loss in the index’s history.
A third of S&P; 500 companies have declined over 20% from their peaks and many retain high valuations despite disappointing earnings numbers. The United States Dollar Index dropped the most it has in over 5 months today to seven month lows - losing against the Euro and Yen. Oil prices plunged, with the U.S. oil benchmark settling down 5.5% at $38.24 a barrel, its first close below $40 a barrel since February 2009.
Some analysis are blaming the China currency devaluation and the drop in the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index – but what is really going on?

The Dow Jones industrial average plummeted 1,000 points when the markets opened on Monday morning, rallied almost all the way back, then petered out again to close down 588 points for the day. For investors who were betting on continued growth in China, the latest news is a drag, but it’s not at all clear whether the slowdown and accompanying stock hit means substantially weaker growth or employment in America. Monday’s wild ride is a good reminder, however, that the single biggest factor in the presidential contest – the economy – is both difficult to predict and out of the candidates’ hands.

Monday’s wild ride is a good reminder, however, that the single biggest factor in the presidential contest – the economy – is both difficult to predict and out of the candidates’ hands.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average /ˌdaʊ ˈdʒoʊnz/, also called the Industrial Average, the Dow Jones, the Dow Jones Industrial, the Dow 30, or simply the Dow, is a stock market index, and one of several indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. The industrial average was first calculated on May 26, 1896. Currently owned by S&P; Dow Jones Indices, which is majority owned by McGraw-Hill Financial, it is the most notable of the Dow Averages, of which the first (non-industrial) was first published on February 16, 1885. The averages are named after Dow and one of his business associates, statistician Edward Jones. It is an index that shows how 30 large publicly owned companies based in the United States have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market. It is the second oldest U.S. market index after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which was also created by Dow.
The Industrial portion of the name is largely historical, as many of the modern 30 components have little or nothing to do with traditional heavy industry. The average is price-weighted, and to compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average. The value of the Dow is not the actual average of the prices of its component stocks, but rather the sum of the component prices divided by a divisor, which changes whenever one of the component stocks has a stock split or stock dividend, so as to generate a consistent value for the index. Since the divisor is currently less than one, the value of the index is larger than the sum of the component prices. Although the Dow is compiled to gauge the performance of the industrial sector within the American economy, the index's performance continues to be influenced by not only corporate and economic reports, but also by domestic and foreign political events such as war and terrorism, as well as by natural disasters that could potentially lead to economic harm.

The Psychological Effects of a Stock Market Crash: Impact on the Economy and Policy (1987)

The crash of an early European stock markets, when the speculative bubble around the South Sea Company collapse in London in 1720.
The economy had been growing fluidly for most of the Roaring Twenties. It was a technological golden age as innovations such as radio, automobiles, aviation, telephone and the power grid were deployed and adopted. Companies that had pioneered these advances, like Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and General Motors saw their stocks soar. Financial corporations also did well as Wall Street bankers floated mutual fund companies (then known as investment trusts) like the Goldman Sachs Trading Corporation. Investors were infatuated with the returns available in the stock market especially with the use of leverage through margin debt.
On August 24, 1921, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at a value of 63.9. By September 3, 1929, it had risen more than sixfold, touching 381.2. It would not regain this level for another 25 years. By the summer of 1929, it was clear that the economy was contracting and the stock market went through a series of unsettling price declines. These declines fed investor anxiety and events soon came to a head on October 24, 28, and 29 (known respectively as Black Thursday, Black Monday, and Black Tuesday).
On Black Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 38 points to 260, a drop of 12.8%. The deluge of selling overwhelmed the ticker tape system that normally gave investors the current prices of their shares. Telephone lines and telegraphs were clogged and were unable to cope. This information vacuum only led to more fear and panic. The technology of the New Era, much celebrated by investors previously, now served to deepen their suffering.
The following day, Black Tuesday was a day of chaos. Forced to liquidate their stocks because of margin calls, overextended investors flooded the exchange with sell orders. The Dow fell 30 points to close at 230 on that day. The glamour stocks of the age saw their values plummet. Across the two days, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 23%.
By the end of the weekend of November 11, the index stood at 228, a cumulative drop of 40 percent from the September high. The markets rallied in succeeding months but it would be a false recovery that led unsuspecting investors into further losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average would lose 89% of its value before finally bottoming out in July 1932. The crash was followed by the Great Depression, the worst economic crisis of modern times that plagued the stock market and Wall Street throughout the nineteen thirties.
On September 16, 2008, failures of massive financial institutions in the United States, due primarily to exposure of securities of packaged subprime loans and credit default swaps issued to insure these loans and their issuers, rapidly devolved into a global crisis resulting in a number of bank failures in Europe and sharp reductions in the value of equities (stock) and commodities worldwide. The failure of banks in Iceland resulted in a devaluation of the Icelandic króna and threatened the government with bankruptcy. Iceland was able to secure an emergency loan from the International Monetary Fund in November.[14] In the United States, 15 banks failed in 2008, while several others were rescued through government intervention or acquisitions by other banks.[15] On October 11, 2008, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the world financial system was teetering on the "brink of systemic meltdown."[16]
The economic crisis caused countries to temporarily close their markets.
On October 8, the Indonesian stock market halted trading, after a 10% drop in one day.
The Times of London reported that the meltdown was being called the Crash of 2008 and older traders were comparing it with Black Monday in 1987. The fall that week of 21 percent was not as large a drop as the 28.3 percent fall 21 years earlier, but some traders were saying it was worse. "At least then it was a short, sharp, shock on one day. This has been relentless all week."[17] Business Week also referred to the crisis as a "stock market crash" or the "Panic of 2008."[18]
Beginning October 6 and lasting all week the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed lower for all five sessions. Volume levels were also record breaking. The Dow Jones industrial average fell over 1,874 points, or 18%, in its worst weekly decline ever on both a point and percentage basis. The S&P; 500 fell more than 20%.[19] The week also set 3 top ten NYSE Group Volume Records with October 8 at #5, October 9 at #10, and October 10 at #1.
