Gillian Barber (born February 22, 1958) is an England-born Canadian actress.
She was born in Coventry, West Midlands, England and raised in British Columbia, Canada.
She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and BFA program in the University of Victoria.
She appeared films such as The Stepfather, Needful Things, and Jumanji, TV series such as The X-Files and Stargate SG-1, and TV animation Sabrina: The Animated Series and Adventures from the Book of Virtues as voice actress.
She teaches at Capilano University, British Columbia, and created the Musical Theatre program in 2007.

Phyllida Barlow's sculptures are massive and appear precarious. For decades, she has worked on a monumental scale with the most unmonumental materials. After many years of being ignored by curators and collectors, and against all odds, Barlow has only recently secured art-world acclaim. This year, she will represent Britain at the 57th Venice International Art Biennale in 2017. Journalist Lynn Barber first met artist Phyllida Barlow many years ago when they were both young mothers in north London. Over 30 years since Lynn was last in Phyllida's house, she returns to interview the sculptor. As an artist who raised five children on a part-time teacher's salary, it is only now, in her 70s, that Barlow is finally achieving international art stardom.

With her band, Gillian Nicola & The Radio Interference, they combine the honesty of folk music with the power of rock and soul to create a sound both unique to them and one that offers something for everyone.
Gillian started off 2015 with a bang, with a performance at the JUNO Concert Series: The Love Song Edition at Hamilton’s Mills’ Hardware alongside many legendary Hamilton musicians. Soon after, Gillian was declared a Regional Finalist in the CBC Searchlight Competition and was selected for the CIRAA Mentorship Program, where she received one-on-one mentorship with Livy Jeanne (Black Box Records, Universal Music) over the summer of 2015. These successes are timely as Gillian embarks on her newest EP, which will be released in early 2016, but Barber Shop Podcast viewers get a sneak peek as she plays some of them live tonight with her brother Ben.
While her roots are certainly still in folk music, new influences have inspired Gillian to write with different sounds in mind. The music on this new recording is inspired by musicians such as Kathleen Edwards, Neko Case and the aforementioned Joni Mitchell, and features a contrast of light and dark sounds and a much more ambient sound than she has used in the past.
A classically trained vocalist from a young age, Gillian’s love of music began as a child. After completing studies at the University of Toronto, Gillian stormed onto the Hamilton and Toronto music scenes in 2012 with her first acoustic EP, Afterburn. She followed this soon after with 2013’s Chasing the Wind, a six-song EP, which Gillian followed up with her first Ontario tour. The album was not only a personal success: Chasing the Wind was nominated for two Hamilton Music Awards and the Toronto Independent Music Awards.
All in all, a very sweet treat to have visit on a mild December Wednesday, a very sweet treat indeed.

I have a new shower. I love to just stand in the shower. It is a great place to think. That is one of my favorite things to do.
Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice.
I have taken to bullet journaling. There is are some formal ways of doing bullet journaling, as well as creative ways of doing bullet journaling, with markers and coloring. That has really been an interesting thing for me. I've never really thought of myself as being creative.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Be willing to let go of who you think you should be, in order to be who you are.”
What book are you reading right now?
Three Simple Steps, by Trevor Blake.
What is the one thing that you are most passionate about?
I am passionate about leadership development, but I would say the biggest thing would be coaching. Just how it can change people’s lives.

In 2016, UCL’s Institute of Advanced Studies became home to the Orwell Foundation, bringing the Orwell Foundation and the Orwell Archive, which was given to UCL on permanent loan by Orwell’s wife, together at UCL. The Orwell Foundation and UCL Festival of Culture are delighted to announce a live, start-to-finish reading of Nineteen Eighty-Four in Senate House, University of London. For the first time in the UK, hear Nineteen Eighty-Four read by a host of actors, writers, journalists and members of the public over the course of a single day in the centre of London. This unique event, part of the UCL Festival of Culture 2017, is free and open to the public.
George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four was written in 1948, just before he died of tuberculosis in University College Hospital. Senate House – where Orwell’s wife worked during the war – provided inspiration for the Ministry of Truth, which Orwell so chillingly depicted in the novel. When Lynn Barber Met Phyllida Barlow BBC Documentary 2017
Phyllida Barlow's sculptures are massive and appear precarious. For decades, she has worked on a monumental scale with the most unmonumental materials. After many years of being ignored by curators and collectors, and against all odds, Barlow has only recently secured art-world acclaim. This year, she will represent Britain at the 57th Venice International Art Biennale in 2017. Journalist Lynn Barber first met artist Phyllida Barlow many years ago when they were both young mothers in north London. Over 30 years since Lynn was last in Phyllida's house, she returns to interview the sculptor. As an artist who raised five children on a part-time teacher's salary, it is only now, in her 70s, that Barlow is finally achieving international art stardom.

Q & A Why is self love important and what was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?
I didn't realize that I wasn't doing that… When a friend of mine asked me what I was doing for self-care, I answered I don't do that on a regular basis. Everybody else came first and I came last. Now, I recognize that self care is so important.
Who is one person who has changed your life for the better?
My coach was a pivotal person to help me get my confidence back.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Don't look out the rearview mirror all the time.”
What is a self care habit that you practice regularly?
I have a new shower. I love to just stand in the shower. It is a great place to think. That is one of my favorite things to do.
Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice.
I have taken to bullet journaling. There is are some formal ways of doing bullet journaling, as well as creative ways of doing bullet journaling, with markers and coloring. That has really been an interesting thing for me. I've never really thought of myself as being creative.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Be willing to let go of who you think you should be, in order to be who you are.”
What book are you reading right now?
Three Simple Steps, by Trevor Blake.
What is the one thing that you are most passionate about?
I am passionate about leadership development, but I would say the biggest thing would be coaching. Just how it can change people’s lives.

After many years of being ignored by curators and collectors, and against all odds, Barlow has only recently secured art-world acclaim. This year, she will represent Britain at the 57th Venice International Art Biennale in 2017. Journalist Lynn Barber first met artist Phyllida Barlow many years ago when they were both young mothers in north London. Over 30 years since Lynn was last in Phyllida's house, she returns to interview the sculptor. As an artist who raised five children on a part-time teacher's salary, it is only now, in her 70s, that Barlow is finally achieving international art stardom.

Gillian started off 2015 with a bang, with a performance at the JUNO Concert Series: The Love Song Edition at Hamilton’s Mills’ Hardware alongside many legendary Hamilton musicians. Soon after, Gillian was declared a Regional Finalist in the CBC Searchlight Competition and was selected for the CIRAA Mentorship Program, where she received one-on-one mentorship with Livy Jeanne (Black Box Records, Universal Music) over the summer of 2015. These successes are timely as Gillian embarks on her newest EP, which will be released in early 2016, but Barber Shop Podcast viewers get a sneak peek as she plays some of them live tonight with her brother Ben.
While her roots are certainly still in folk music, new influences have inspired Gillian to write with different sounds in mind. The music on this new recording is inspired by musicians such as Kathleen Edwards, Neko Case and the aforementioned Joni Mitchell, and features a contrast of light and dark sounds and a much more ambient sound than she has used in the past.
A classically trained vocalist from a young age, Gillian’s love of music began as a child. After completing studies at the University of Toronto, Gillian stormed onto the Hamilton and Toronto music scenes in 2012 with her first acoustic EP, Afterburn. She followed this soon after with 2013’s Chasing the Wind, a six-song EP, which Gillian followed up with her first Ontario tour. The album was not only a personal success: Chasing the Wind was nominated for two Hamilton Music Awards and the Toronto Independent Music Awards.
All in all, a very sweet treat to have visit on a mild December Wednesday, a very sweet treat indeed.

She started by adjusting her mindset, and going in to work with the idea of learning from challenges, rather than letting challenges define her. In the end, her coaching led her to leave her corporate job, and start a coaching practice of her own.
Q & A Why is self love important and what was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love?
I didn't realize that I wasn't doing that… When a friend of mine asked me what I was doing for self-care, I answered I don't do that on a regular basis. Everybody else came first and I came last. Now, I recognize that self care is so important.
Who is one person who has changed your life for the better?
My coach was a pivotal person to help me get my confidence back.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
“Don't look out the rearview mirror all the time.”
What is a self care habit that you practice regularly?
I have a new shower. I love to just stand in the shower. It is a great place to think. That is one of my favorite things to do.
Can you share a resource, an app or a tool that we can use to build our selfcare practice.
I have taken to bullet journaling. There is are some formal ways of doing bullet journaling, as well as creative ways of doing bullet journaling, with markers and coloring. That has really been an interesting thing for me. I've never really thought of myself as being creative.

“Be willing to let go of who you think you should be, in order to be who you are.”
What book are you reading right now?
Three Simple Steps, by Trevor Blake.
What is the one thing that you are most passionate about?
I am passionate about leadership development, but I would say the biggest thing would be coaching. Just how it can change people’s lives.

For the first time in the UK, hear Nineteen Eighty-Four read by a host of actors, writers, journalists and members of the public over the course of a single day in the centre of London. This unique event, part of the UCL Festival of Culture 2017, is free and open to the public.
George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four was written in 1948, just before he died of tuberculosis in University College Hospital. Senate House – where Orwell’s wife worked during the war – provided inspiration for the Ministry of Truth, which Orwell so chillingly depicted in the novel. Nineteen Eighty-Four has become perhaps the most pervasively influential book of the twentieth century, recently becoming a bestseller again. This unique event offers the opportunity to hear Orwell’s seminal work read aloud in the building which inspired the literary world’s most fearsome (fictional) building.
The Orwell Foundation uses the work of George Orwell to celebrate honest writing and reporting, to uncover hidden lives, to confront uncomfortable truths and, in doing so, to promote Orwell’s values of integrity, decency and fidelity to truth. The Foundation awards the UK’s most prestigious prize for political writing; runs free public events, debates and lectures; has a Youth Prize working to inspire young people all over the country; and runs the Unreported Britain project. In 2016, UCL’s Institute of Advanced Studies became home to the Orwell Foundation, bringing the Orwell Foundation and the Orwell Archive, which was given to UCL on permanent loan by Orwell’s wife, together at UCL.
