Products developed over the years include silicone sealants, adhesives, silicone mold-making rubbers, lubricants, release agents for cookware, sound-absorbing silicone, leather treatment, skin care lotion, preceramic polymers for high temperature applications, liquid silicone drycleaning solvent, High purity silicon wafers for use in semi-conductors and solar panels, as well as silicone waxes.

History[link]

In 1942, moisture in aircraft engines and the formation of corona discharge from aircraft electrical systems at high altitudes made high-altitude flight all but impossible. Dr. Shailer Bass developed Dow Corning's first product, a simple silicone grease (Dow Corning #4 Compound) that solved the problem. Dow Corning was formally established in 1943 specifically to explore the potential of silicones. Dr. E.C. Sullivan was named president and Dr. William R. Collings was named general manager in 1943. Dr. Collings later became president from 1954 until 1962.

A large, majority-owned subsidiary of Dow Corning Corporation is the Hemlock Semiconductor Corporation. Founded in the 1960s before the computer revolution, it is still one of the world's leading manufacturers of high-purity polycrystalline silicon which is sold in varying purity grades for use in both semiconductor silicon wafer manufacture and photovoltaics applications as solar cells.

Breast implant controversy[link]

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, class-action lawsuits^[1] claimed that Dow Corning's silicone breast implants caused systemic health problems. The claims first centered around breast cancer, and then migrated to a range of autoimmune diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and various neurological problems. This led to numerous lawsuits beginning in 1984 and culminating in a 1998 multi-billion dollar class action settlement. As a result, Dow Corning was in bankruptcy protection for nine years, ending in June 2004.

A number of large, independent reviews of the scientific literature, including the U.S. Institute of Medicine, have subsequently found that silicone breast implants do not appear to cause breast cancers or any identifiable systemic disease.^[2][3][4]

Eric Peters (born 28 January 1969) was an amateur and professional rugby union player, usually playing at No8, who rose to captain the Scotland national rugby union team.

Early life[link]

Born in Glasgow Peters attended Brentwood School,^[1] and Cambridge University, where he became captain of rugby. He played rugby for England at both Under 21 and Student level, before choosing to play for Scotland at senior level.^[2]

Rugby career[link]

He joined Bath Rugby club in September 1993,^[3] when rugby union was still an amateur game, so he also qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and worked for a property consultant. He first played for Scotland against Canada, in January 1995, and became a professional player when the code was changed in 1996. He was first appointed Scottish captain for the 1999 match against Italy, but sustained a shattered kneecap in April 1999, and was out of the game for over a year. In March 2000, whilst still undergoing rehabilitation and surgery on his knee, it was discovered that he had testicular cancer, which was successfully treated with chemotherapy.^[4]

Whilst still injured, he left Bath and joined Harlequins, who he first played for in December 2000. Leaving Harlequins in 2001, he briefly joined Fylde and Rotherham before joining Connacht in 2002.^[5] He also briefly returned to the Scotland team in 2002.^[6] Peters usually played in the Number 8 position, is 1.96m tall and had a playing weight of 105 kg

Later career[link]

Retiring from professional rugby in 2003, Peters became a Chartered Surveyor and Senior Associate at property consultants King Sturge,^[7] for whom he still plays rugby sevens, helping them win the RICS tournament 3 years in a row.^[8] He also commentates on rugby for BBC Radio 5 Live and is a celebrity supporter of the Orchid cancer charity.^[9]

Robert Louis Hansen II (also known as Bob (or Bobby) Hansen) (born January 18, 1961 in Des Moines, Iowa) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'6" guard, he played nine seasons (1983–1992) in the National Basketball Association.

Hansen was a standout at Christ The King Elementary school and was a four year starter and star at West Des Moines Dowling High School in the late 1970s. As a senior, he averaged 26 points and eleven rebounds per game to lead his team to an Iowa Class 4-A boys' basketball championship in 1979. His success in high school made him a prized recruit for coach Lute Olson and the University of Iowa, where Hansen played a key role on the Hawkeyes team that reached the 1980 Final Four. As a senior in 1983, he was named as Iowa's Most Valuable Player, and was selected by the Utah Jazz in the third round of the 1983 NBA Draft.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Earvin "Magic" Johnson said Hansen's tough, hard-nosed defensive style would often get him properly prepared for the physical toll of the NBA Playoffs. Although he earned his ability to guard Magic in 40 playoff games for the Jazz from 1984–90, it was in nine post-season games with the Bulls he earned his only championship ring.

Hansen played eight solid seasons as a part-time starter for the Utah Jazz and Sacramento Kings, but he is best known for his heroics with the Chicago Bulls during the 1992 NBA Finals. During game six, the Bulls, who held a 3-2 series lead over the Portland Trail Blazers, were trailing by 15 points after three quarters. Coach Phil Jackson decided to pull Michael Jordan from the game in favor of Hansen, hoping for an extra jolt, and Hansen delivered immediately with a three-pointer and a steal off Jerome Kersey. With Jordan on the bench for the majority of the quarter, the Bulls were able to rally for a 97-93 victory, thus winning their second consecutive NBA championship.

Having won his championship ring, Hansen retired from the NBA in 1992. Hansen now is a color-commentator for University of Iowa basketball broadcasts. He calls games with Gary Dolphin. He has also run many summer basketball camps for Chicago-area children. He was named to the Des Moines Register Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
