Detachment (territory)

Detachment (Old French de, from, and [at]tach, joining with a stake) under international law is the formal, permanent separation of and loss of sovereignty over some territory to another geo-political entity (either adjacent or non-contiguous). After World War I Alsace and Lorraine were a formal detachment from Germany. More often detachment occurs as a process within a country, for example the creation of the Federal District of Columbia resulted from a detachment of territory from the State of Maryland. The removal of territory from a city or special district is a detachment. Within a country detachment is governed by the laws of the supervening entity. Detachment can be considered the opposite or reverse of annexation.

Suez Canal

The formal detachment of Egypt from the Turkish Empire was a condition for British investment in the Suez Canal.

League of Nations mandates

Following World War I, a number of colonial territories and border territories were detached from Germany, as well as portions of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and Ottoman Empire being detached. Some of these detachments were incorporated directly into new countries, such as Yugoslavia, or annexed by existing countries such as Northern Schleswig into Denmark. But some, particularly in the Middle East and those of the German colonies, were placed under the "protection" of one or another of the Allied countries who won the war, including Germany's concessions in China, Kiautschou and Chefoo. From a rule of law standpoint these protectorates were not war booty, but "mandates" from a legally constituted international body, so detachment occurred without annexation.

Detachment (military)

A detachment (from the French détachement) is a military unit. It can either be detached from a larger unit for a specific function or (particularly in United States Military usage) be a permanent unit smaller than a battalion. The term is often used to refer to a unit that is assigned to a different base from the parent unit.

An example is the United States Army's 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Airborne) (1st SFOD-D (A)), commonly known as Delta Force by the general public.

Detachment is also the term used as the collective noun for personnel manning an artillery piece (e.g. gun detachment).

Use by Cadet forces in the United Kingdom

The Army Cadet Force in the United Kingdom breaks its structure down into local detachments which usually consist of between 10 and 40 cadets. Several detachments make up a company.

The Combined Cadet Force, however, does not use this term. Individual units are known as Cadet Contingents.

Open Season (film series)

The Open Season franchise from Sony Pictures Animation consists of three films: Open Season (2006), Open Season 2 (2008), and Open Season 3 (2010), along with a short film Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run (2007). A fourth film, titled Open Season: Scared Silly, is set to be released on home media in 2016.

In the tranquil town of Timberline, a 900-pound grizzly bear named Boog has his perfect world turned upside down after he meets Elliot, a one-antlered mule deer. After Elliot messes up Boog's nature show, they end up tranquilized by Boog's owner Ranger Beth and then her friend Sheriff Gordy tells her to release them into the Timberline National Forest before open season for only 3 days. But when hunting season comes, it's up to Boog and Elliot to rally all the other forest animals and turn the tables on the hunters. In the end, Boog decides to stay in the forest and says goodbye to Beth (who came back to take Boog home).

Doug (TV series)

Doug is an American animated sitcom created by Jim Jinkins. The show focuses on the early adolescent life of its title character, Douglas "Doug" Funnie, who experiences common predicaments while attending school in his new hometown of Bluffington. Doug narrates each story in his journal, and the show incorporates many imagination sequences. The series addresses numerous topics, including trying to fit in, platonic and romantic relationships, self-esteem, bullying, and rumors. Numerous episodes center on Doug's attempts to impress his classmate and crush, Patti Mayonnaise.

Jinkins developed Doug from drawings in his sketchbook that he created over the course of the 1980s. Doug, a mostly autobiographical creation, was largely inspired by Jenkins' childhood growing up in Virginia, with most characters in the series being based on real individuals. He first pitched Doug as a children's book to uninterested publishers before Nickelodeon purchased the show. Following this, the series went under further development, in which Jinkins meticulously detailed every aspect of the show's setting. Jinkins was insistent that the series have a purpose, and instructed writers to annotate each script with a moral. The show's unusual soundtrack consists largely of mouth noises.

Doug the Pug is a 3 year old Pug living in Nashville, TN. Born in Ohio, Doug made the move to Nashville as a puppy when his owner, Leslie Mosier, adopted him and brought him to his current home. He is taking the internet by storm and has reached the status of a "celebrity dog." He is also the most followed pug on the internet. His social media outlets are constantly growing and reaching new people daily. Doug's Facebook page has over 2.3 million likes, his Instagram account has over 1 million followers and his Twitter account has over 32,800 followers. He also has his own Vine and YouTube accounts. When Doug isn't busy attending music festivals or appearing on radio stations and television talk shows, he is hanging out with his many celebrity friends. Among these celebrity friends are Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, John Legend, and many more.

After Doug's social media started gaining more and more attention, big companies started paying attention. The first to write a feature on Doug was Mashable. Since then, companies like Cosmopolitan, Buzzfeed, TIME, Huffington Post, and more have began to take an interest and post their own features on him. His photos have even been featured on Good Morning America. Doug was recently sent to cover both Lollapalooza and the first ever Billboard Hot 100 Fest. He is also the first verified animal on Spotify. Most recently, Doug appeared in an alternative music video for Fall Out Boy's song Irresistible featuring Demi Lovato.
