Trains at Edinburgh Haymarket | 15/05/15
S.Castro & Derbst One - Haymarket Riot (1.Mai Track)
Time - 16:40 to 19:15 A few hours stay at Haymarket station, one stop west of Edinburgh Waverley so all of the trains are heading to and from Waverley. Plenty of ScotRail trains and some other operators thrown in such as both Virgin Trains West and East Coast! As well as Cross Country and First TransPennie Express. This was taken during the Friday evening rush hour in the city of Edinburgh so plenty of action is included. Features plenty of 158s, 170s and 334s as well as some 156s and 380s being the main traction at Haymarket but Class 43s, 68s, 221s, 350s and 390s are seen as well. The story of the Haymarket riot and its effects on the labor movement. Descendants of the Chicago union leaders tell the story of this tragic event. Through reenactments, voice over and interviews the story of Haymarket unfolds in this documentary.
A dramatic recreation of the infamous bombing in 1886, excerpted and adapted from the play, "Inquisitions (and Other Un-American Activities)." A key moment in the history of the labor movement and the beginning of the first US Red Scare. Audio originally recorded in 2003 at a live performance in Burlington, Vermont. Written and edited by Greg Guma, directed by Bill Boardman. A two-hour radio broadcast is available via Maverick Media, Squeaky Wheel Production, and Audioport.
James Green, professor of history at UMASS Boston and Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States discuss the exhilarating rise of a visionary union movement and its downfall in the wake of the Haymarket tragedy. In May of 1886 Americans awoke to the news that a bomb had exploded a Chicago labor rally, killing several policemen. Coming in the midst of the largest national strike Americans had ever seen, the bombing, the mass hysteria it created, and the sensational trial and executions that followed, made headlines across the country. National sentiment turned against the burgeoning labor movement, ending a moment of hope for the nation's working class.
