Almost 1,000 people with disabilities reported being abused at their workplaces in fiscal 2015, government figures show.
The total of 970 was almost double from a year earlier, reflecting changes in the calculation method, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said Wednesday.
Of those who reported abuse, 855 people suffered financially, including wage cuts, followed by psychological and physical abuse, at 75 and 73 cases, respectively. Multiple cases of abuse of a person were confirmed in one case.
Specific examples included hourly pay below the regional minimum, aggressive language as well as blows to the head with a mop handle and a slap to the cheek.
The ministry compiled the survey based on information reported to labor bureaus and labor standards inspection offices across Japan.
Cases of abuse were confirmed by 507 offices nationwide.
The survey did not cover abuse at welfare facilities for people with disabilities.
