Ever heard of Homer Simpson? Well, this is basically his job only it's likely you'll be much more proficient. A plant operator looks after the equipment at a power plant or chemical plant to ensure safety regulations are adhered to.

The role requires routine, scheduled maintenance for various types of equipment such as tractors, loaders, drills, crushers, trucks, excavators etc.

The primary role of a plant operator is to prevent any mechanical errors that could impair the safety of other employees.

They are usually required to move and handle equipment on a site and carry out daily safety and compliance checks. Other tasks that they are responsible for can include monitoring and operating process control equipment such as engineering and packaging.

A secondary education is not mandatory but it is advisable as a plant operator (as is a tertiary education) due to the complexity of the task.
Most plant operator positions provide on-the-job training but an interest in mechanics and the ability to "fix your own" at home is a good indication you will be successful in securing such a role.

Responsibilities & Skills

Plant operators must know what tools are needed to perform repairs, be able to see any possible dangers, and be familiar with the standards set by the organization in regards to equipment operation.

Plant operators carry out routine checks on equipment, supply maintenance on equipment, and identify any potential equipment problems.
Plant operators need to be physically fit and enjoy practical and manual activities and be good at following written instructions.
