Broken Hill Area

Broken Hill is one of Australia's quintessential outback towns, and is situated in the western outback of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is very much known as a mining town, and the history of the world's largest mining corporation, BHP Biliton, is closely intertwined with Broken Hill's history.

About 16.2% of Broken Hill's working population are employed in Health Care and Social Assistance, followed by Retail Trade at 13.2% and Mining at 10.4%. The total population of Broken Hill is 19,125 people.

The first mosque built in New South Wales was in Broken Hill, when, in 1891, Afghan camel drivers working in the outback erected the place of worship as they settled into the area. Aboriginal Australians make up 0.6% of the population.
