Der Standard is an Austrian national daily broadsheet newspaper published in Vienna, although the paper is produced in Tulln an der Donau in Lower Austria, due to lower taxes in that federal state.
Der Standard was founded by Oscar Bronner as a financial newspaper and published its first edition on 19 October 1988. German media company Axel Springer acquired stake in the paper in 1988 and sold it in 1995.
Bronner remains the paper's publisher and is nominally editor-in-chief along with Alexandra Föderl-Schmid, who handles the day-to-day editing. When Föderl-Schmid took over from Gerfried Sperl in July 2007, it became the first Austrian newspaper to have a female editor-in-chief. Der Standard sees itself as—in a Continental European sense (socially and culturally, but not economically)—liberal and independent. Third parties have described the paper as having a left-liberal stance. Until 2007, the editor-in-chief of the daily was Gerfried Sperl, Alexandra Föderl-Schmid succeeded him in the post.
Herbert von Karajan (German pronunciation: [ˈhɛɐbɛɐt fɔn ˈkaʁaˌjan]; born Heribert, Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, and he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime. By one estimate he was the top-selling classical music recording artist of all time, having sold an estimated 200 million records.
The Karajans were of Greek or Aromanian ancestry. His great-great-grandfather, Georg Karajan (Georgios Karajánnis, Greek: Γεώργιος Καραγιάννης), was born in Kozani, in the Ottoman province of Rumelia (now in Greece), leaving for Vienna in 1767, and eventually Chemnitz, Electorate of Saxony. He and his brother participated in the establishment of Saxony's cloth industry, and both were ennobled for their services by Frederick Augustus III on 1 June 1792, thus the prefix "von" to the family name. The surname Karajánnis became Karajan. Although traditional biographers ascribed a Serbian or simply a Slavic origin to his mother, Karajan's family from the maternal side, through his grandfather who was born in the village of Mojstrana, Duchy of Carniola (today in Slovenia), was Slovene. By this line, Karajan was related to Austrian composer of Slovene descent Hugo Wolf. Karajan seems to have known some Slovene.
Michael Haneke (German: [ˈmɪçaːʔeːl ˈhaːnəkə]; born 23 March 1942) is an Austrian film director and screenwriter best known for films such as Funny Games (1997), Caché (2005), The White Ribbon (2009) and Amour (2012). His work often examines social issues, and depicts the feelings of estrangement experienced by individuals in modern society. Haneke has worked in television‚ theatre and cinema. Besides working as a filmmaker, Haneke also teaches film direction at the Film Academy Vienna.
At the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, his film The White Ribbon won the Palme d'Or, and at the 67th Golden Globe Awards the film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2012, his film Amour premiered and competed at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The film would go on to win the Palme d'Or, making it his second win of the prestigious award in three years; this makes him the seventh director in history to have won it twice and the only Austrian director to have accomplished this. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Emmanuelle Riva. It won in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Haneke has made films in French, German and in English.
Maren Ade (born 12 December 1976) is a German film director, screenwriter and producer. Even though Ade was born and raised in Germany, she is able to speak English fluently. Despite this, she claims that she isn't ready to take on an English-language project. Ade currently lives in Berlin, teaching screenwriting at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg.
Ade studied at the University of Television and Film in Munich. Her graduation film, The Forest for the Trees, premiered at the 2003 Hof International Film Festival, and went on to win the Special Jury Prize for World Cinema at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. A year later, a German distributor started working alongside Ade and featured her film. Ade shared some thoughts about the characters she created for her films, and especially explored The Forest for the Trees by saying, "I don't like films that force you to identify with someone. I didn't want to make a film about a victim either."
Ade's second feature, Everyone Else, debuted at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, where it was awarded the Jury Grand Prix and the Best Actress Silver Bear for Birgit Minichmayr.Through this second film, Ade was heading toward gender equality as she said, "I wanted to tell something about a relationship where male and female are not defined clearly anymore" According to Kent Jones, Ade is truly an adult filmmaker whose films relate to her viewers on an emotional level, and goes on to include that "Ade employs the frame [of her film] not to contain but to follow closely but never relentlessly in an effort to maintain a sympathetic emotional continuity"
