What is the cheapest European country to live in?
Kiev in the Ukraine has always ranked low on the cost of living list.
And they're in the middle of a civil war. Does that mean prices are even lower if I am willing to put up with the sound of gunfire?
People in the inner cities make that trade all the time. You can buy entire mansions in Detroit for $5,000.
What's another option? I'd like something both affordable and safe.
Bulgaria is rather affordable. There's nothing particularly dangerous there, now that communism has fallen.
I can't think of anything in Bulgaria.
The capital city Sophia, Bulgaria is really cheap, a medieval style that hasn't yet been updated to ugly deco art like the glass egg building in London.
I'd try London except that it costs more to rent a hotel room there than pay a month's rent here.
Lithuania is rather affordable. It has classic medieval architecture, modernizing downtowns and a lot of Eastern Orthodox churches.
Not quite my style.
Bucharest, Romania is called a Little Paris by locals.
That's certainly better than all the medieval castles and Transylvania tourism.
They have a lot of spas in the region, and the Black Sea is the Eastern European rival to the Mediterranean while being much more affordable.
Sochi, Russia is on the Black Sea. That's like their French Riviera.
And it will be really cheap to visit after the Olympics.
Even the Olympians didn't want to stay when they were there.
Slovakia is rather affordable, while having a very German feel. Or try Budapest in Hungary.
I can't stand their cooking. It's all sausage and sauerkraut.
Spain is getting rather cheap these days. After their housing bust, there are millions of summer properties available for dirt cheap.
And the squatters get to stay there for free!

List of sovereign states and dependent territories in Europe
The list below includes all entities falling even partially under any of the various common definitions of Europe, geographical or political. Fifty six sovereign states, six of which have limited recognition, are listed with territory in Europe and/or membership in international European organisations. There are eight areas that are not integral parts of a European state or have special political status.
Definition of Europe as a continent
Under the commonly used geographic definition, the border between Asia and Europe stretches along the Ural Mountains,Ural River, and Caspian Sea in the east, the Greater Caucasus range and the Black Sea, with its outlets, the Bosporus and Dardanelles, in the south. Based on that division, transcontinental states Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkey have territory both in Europe and Asia.
The island of Cyprus in West Asia is proximate to Anatolia (or Asia Minor) and is on the Anatolian Plate but is often considered part of Europe as a current member of the European Union (EU). Armenia is entirely in West Asia also but is a member of certain European organisations. Sometimes Israel is considered as part of geopolitical Europe as well.

What is the cheapest European country to live in?
Kiev in the Ukraine has always ranked low on the cost of living list.
And they're in the middle of a civil war. Does that mean prices are even lower if I am willing to put up with the sound of gunfire?
People in the inner cities make that trade all the time. You can buy entire mansions in Detroit for $5,000.
What's another option? I'd like something both affordable and safe.
Bulgaria is rather affordable. There's nothing particularly dangerous there, now that communism has fallen.
I can't think of anything in Bulgaria.
The capital city Sophia, Bulgaria is really cheap, a medieval style that hasn't yet been updated to ugly deco art like the glass egg building in London.
I'd try London except that it costs more to rent a hotel room there than pay a month's rent here.
Lithuania is rather affordable. It has classic medieval architecture, modernizing downtowns and a lot of Eastern Orthodox churches.
Not quite my style.
Bucharest, Romania is called a Little Paris by locals.
That's certainly better than all the medieval castles and Transylvania tourism.
They have a lot of spas in the region, and the Black Sea is the Eastern European rival to the Mediterranean while being much more affordable.
Sochi, Russia is on the Black Sea. That's like their French Riviera.
And it will be really cheap to visit after the Olympics.
Even the Olympians didn't want to stay when they were there.
Slovakia is rather affordable, while having a very German feel. Or try Budapest in Hungary.
I can't stand their cooking. It's all sausage and sauerkraut.
Spain is getting rather cheap these days. After their housing bust, there are millions of summer properties available for dirt cheap.
And the squatters get to stay there for free!
