Russia: "Exit corridors” to open from Aleppo, militants offered amnesty
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that Russia and the Syrian government will launch a large-scale humanitarian operation in Aleppo during which civilians and militants will be given the chance to leave the city, speaking in Moscow, Thursday.
SOT, Sergei Shoigu, Russian Defence Minister (Russian): "Over the past two weeks, eight terrorist attacks were committed in locations of the Syrian Armed Forces, using 21 suicide bombers, three infantry fighting vehicles, and 12 car bombs. 500 people were killed in these attacks, more than 2,000 were wounded. We have repeatedly urged the warring parties to reconcile, but each time the militants have violated the peace, they fired at settlements, attacked government troops. As a result, the city of Aleppo and its suburbs have found themselves in a difficult situation and have arrived at a critical humanitarian situation. In connection to this, the President of the Russian Federation jointly with the Syrian Government have decided today that it is necessary to initiate a large-scale humanitarian operation on rendering assistance to the civilian population of Aleppo. We invite the international organisations working in Syria to join the operation to assist civilians who are being held hostage by terrorists as well as to militants willing to lay down their arms. The Russian centre for conciliation in cooperation with the Syrian authorities is to open three humanitarian corridors and extend these humanitarian corridors to the establishment of places for hot meals and first aid. Given the fact that the our American partners have not provided us with information on the division of Al-Nusra Front and the Free Syrian army, we need to create fourth corridor for the safe exit of militants with weapons in the North of Aleppo in the direction of the Castello Road. I want to emphasize that this step is taken only for the sake of safety of inhabitants of Aleppo. We still hope to get the coordinates of positions of the Free Syrian army from our American colleagues."
