International Monetary Fund

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an international organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., of "188 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world." Formed in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference, it came into formal existence in 1945 with 29 member countries and the goal of reconstructing the international payment system. Countries contribute funds to a pool through a quota system from which countries experiencing balance of payments difficulties can borrow money. As of 2010, the fund had SDR476.8 billion, about US$755.7 billion at then-current exchange rates.

Through the fund, and other activities such as statistics-keeping and analysis, surveillance of its members' economies and the demand for self-correcting policies, the IMF works to improve the economies of its member countries. The organization's objectives stated in the Articles of Agreement are: to promote international monetary cooperation, international trade, high employment, exchange-rate stability, sustainable economic growth, and making resources available to member countries in financial difficulty.

  • IMF optimistic on U.S. economy but reveals warning signals

In its annual review of US economic policy, the International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday the U.S. economy was "overall in good shape",. It said growth was set to accelerate from recent setbacks despite an overvalued dollar. The IMF expects U.S. growth to be 2.2 percent in 2016 and 2.5 percent in 2017, with inflation rising slowly toward the Federal Reserve's goal of two percent. Despite the positive signs, the IMF warned that setbacks could come from a downdraft in global demand, declining participation in the labor force, and widespread poverty. It urged U.S. policymakers to take steps to increase labor force participation. That includes improving child-care and other family-friendly benefits to draw more women into the workforce. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/IVQMe-...

Travel Management Priorities for 2012 2012: a shifting landscape requiring strong foundations Travel managers who have faced market turbulence over the last few years should be steeling themselves for another challenging year that will underline the importance of an effectively managed travel program. Global economic recovery may be slower than previously anticipated, according to the International Monetary Fund, which has revised its forecast for GDP growth down to 4% (stable compared to 2011).1 These global figures hide considerable differences between countries, however, with weak progress in advanced economies contrasting with double-digit growth in China and India. Although oil prices may be lower than in previous years and air capacity looks set to rise slightly, higher travel costs can be expected across regions. In air travel, international traffic looks set to grow in all regions, especially to and from Asia Pacific. Nevertheless, airlines will maintain a tight capacity environment, and cuts will continue on domestic routes in the United States. In all markets, buyers will need to manage ancillary fees and high fuel surcharges, while new credit booking charges and the inclusion of airlines in the European Union's Emissions Trading Scheme will add to the cost of flights to and from E.U. airports. Hotel occupancy will continue to pose a challenge in many cities, making last-room availability agreements advisable to secure rooms for travelers. London in particular will require special attention during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Increases are likely to continue in average daily rates, ranging from negligible to double figures, depending on the city. Ground transportation should bring some new good news for the travel program, with car rental prices possibly falling in some markets as consolidation and competition intensify. At the same time, high-speed rail networks will continue developing around the world, notably in China and some European countries. Buyers will have to watch for higher prices though and progress in intermodal travel remains slow. In the meetings and events market, buyers can expect more scope for regional contracts in Europe but less flexibility on cancellation and contrition fees in North America. Average group size and spend will likely increase in North America but decrease in Europe, where many organizers will favor national over international destinations. Hybrid events combining physically present and remote attendees will be more common, and companies will increasingly adopt a more strategic, innovative and technology-driven approach to M&E; management while seeking synergies with the transient travel program. Finally, 2012 promises to bring improvements to the traveler experience as more dedicated travel management apps come onto the market and social media are used more commonly to share information relevant to business travel.

Washington DC Travel - Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C. The city shares its name with the U.S. state of Washington, which is located on the countrys Pacific coast. The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other sides. The District has a resident population of 599,657; because of commuters from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.3 million, the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the country. Article One of the United States Constitution provides for a federal district, distinct from the states, to serve as the permanent national capital. The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are located in the District, as are many of the nations monuments and museums. Washington, D.C. hosts 174 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). The headquarters of other institutions such as trade unions, lobbying groups, and professional associations are also located in the District. The city is governed by a mayor and a 13-member city council. However, the United States Congress has supreme authority over Washington, D.C., and may overturn local laws. Residents of the District therefore have less self-governance than residents of the states. The District has a non-voting, at-large Congressional delegate, but no senators. D.C. residents could not vote in presidential elections until the ratification of the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1961. The protestors are members of a group called Jubilee 2000. The organisation is part of a worldwide movement seeking to cancel the unpayable international debts of the poorest countries by the millennium. The group says repayment of I-M-F loans means economic development in those countries are delayed. Debt payments mean countries devote less money to education, health, agricultural development. Following a fifteen minute protest, police were summoned to the building and the protesters were ordered off the front plaza of the I-M-F. After refusing to leave, leaders of the group were arrested and taken to the city jail for fingerprinting and booking. Jubilee 2000 also claims unpayable debt and austerity measures often imposed by the I-M-F and the World Bank can inflame internal social conflicts in developing countries. The group claims that consequently, U-S and European military and social intervention becomes necessary. Jubilee 2000 says its name was inspired by the Biblical concept of "jubilee" in which all debts are cancelled after 50 years. This is an old game played by the" white-shoe boys" from the World Bank and the IMF, the International Monetary fund. If you want to understand international loan sharking tactics, listen or read any of the material from John Perkins, author of “Confessions of An Economic Hit Man.” Now 60-plus years later, many areas of Central America are sliding into 4th-world status! It's strategically located on the isthmus that forms the land bridge connecting North and South America. It controls the Panama Canal that links the North Atlantic Ocean via Caribbean Sea with North Pacific Ocean, one of the most important shipping routes in the world. The ease of travel and wide array of experiences are making Panama one of the most attractive emerging tourism destinations in the world. In just one week, visitors can enjoy two different oceans, experience the mountains and rainforest, learn about native cultures and take advantage of vibrant urban life. The capital, Panama City, is a modern, sophisticated metropolis that resembles Miami and has established commerce, arts, fashion and dining. Fodors, Frommers and National Geographic have all recently began publishing guides for Panama, only the second country in Central America, behind Costa Rica, to have such extensive travel coverage. Panama is known as the "Crossroads of the Americas" due to its privileged position between North and South America. The indigenous meaning of the country's name, "abundance of fish", reflects Panama's reputation as a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and eco-tourists alike. As the isthmus connecting two massive continents, Panama's flora and fauna is incredibly diverse. For example, Panama was recently named the country with the most bird species in the world; over 900. Panama's many indigenous tribes are still thriving, living in the same ancient manner as their ancestors, making its cultural fabric exceptionally rich. Panama's government has strong ties to the United States and strongly supports business, development and tourism. The International Monetary Fund applauds the country's diversified economy and predicts it to have one of the strongest GDP growth rates in the world for the next several years. Panama is known for its highly developed international banking sector, with about 80 banks from several countries establishing local branches, including HSBC, BBVA and Citi Bank. Currently undergoing expansion, the Canal continues to drive Panama's service-based economy and remains one of the most important transportation links in the world. In addition to the country's strong economic base, Panama's physical infrastructure, including modern hospitals, airports and roads, is much more highly developed than its Central American neighbors. Panama boasts a large expat community; about 25,000 US citizens live in the country. It is worth spending some time reading up on Panama and communicating with locals, expats and fellow travelers alike before arriving in the country. Consider joining some local forums or blogs for expats or the Central America Forum. Many of the local blogs can give you the most current info on: floods, earthquakes, trail closings, and the best restaurant reviews. Enjoy Your Panama Travel!

America's economic growth outlook has been cut by the International Monetary Fund. ... euronews, the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe for your daily dose of international news, curated and explained:http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a Euronews is available in 13 other languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU http://www.euronews.com/2013/06/14/imf-warns-america-on-growth America's economic growth outlook has been cut by the International Monetary Fund. The Government has made spending cuts, but consumers seem still to be going out and buying. Washington's across-the-board cuts, known as sequestration, only became effective in March because Congress could not agree on an alternative. However the IMF is now saying this deficit reduction has been "excessively rapid and ill-designed". According to this latest fund report, America will grow by a sluggish 1.9 per cent this year, and the forecast for next year is down from three to 2.7 per cent. Meanwhile the Federal Reserve's bond buying program may be cooled. Markets are looking to next week's Fed meeting and Chairman Ben Bernanke for clues as to his thinking. • Wall Street, the International Monetary Fund, and the Bankrupting of Argentina (2005)

The Argentine economic crisis (1999--2002) was a major downturn in Argentina's economy. It began in 1999 with a decrease of real Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The crisis caused the fall of the government, default on the country's foreign debt, widespread unemployment, riots, the rise of alternative currencies and the end of the peso's fixed exchange rate to the US dollar. By 2002 GDP growth had returned, surprising economists and the business media. As of 2012, the default had not been completely resolved, although the government had repaid its IMF loans in full. Since the early 1990s, Argentina had relied on the IMF to provide the country with reliable access to credit and to guide its economic reforms. When the recession began, the national deficit widened to 2.5% of GDP in 1999 and it...

The World Bank has long been criticized by non-governmental organizations, such as the indigenous rights group Survival International, and academics, including its former Chief Economist Joseph Stiglitz, Henry Hazlitt and Ludwig Von Mises. Henry Hazlitt argued that the World Bank along with the monetary system it was designed within would promote world inflation and "a world in which international trade is State-dominated" when they were being advocated. Stiglitz argued that the so-called free market reform policies which the Bank advocates are often harmful to economic development if implemented badly, too quickly ("shock therapy"), in the wrong sequence or in weak, uncompetitive economies. One of the strongest criticisms of the World Bank has been the way in which it is governed. While the World Bank represents 188 countries, it is run by a small number of economically powerful countries. These countries (which also provide most of the institution's funding) choose the leadership and senior management of the World Bank, and so their interests dominate the bank. Titus Alexander argues that the unequal voting power of western countries and the World Bank's role in developing countries makes it similar to the South African Development Bank under apartheid, and therefore a pillar of global apartheid. In the 1990s, the World Bank and the IMF forged the Washington Consensus, policies which included deregulation and liberalization of markets, privatization and the downscaling of government. Though the Washington Consensus was conceived as a policy that would best promote development, it was criticized for ignoring equity, employment and how reforms like privatization were carried out. Joseph Stiglitz argued that the Washington Consensus placed too much emphasis on the growth of GDP, and not enough on the permanence of growth or on whether growth contributed to better living standards. The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations report criticized the World Bank and other international financial institutions for focusing too much "on issuing loans rather than on achieving concrete development results within a finite period of time" and called on the institution to "strengthen anti-corruption efforts." Criticism of the World Bank often takes the form of protesting as seen in recent events such as the World Bank Oslo 2002 Protests, the October Rebellion, and the Battle of Seattle. Such demonstrations have occurred all over the world, even amongst the Brazilian Kayapo people. Another source of criticism has been the tradition of having an American head the bank, implemented because the United States provides the majority of World Bank funding. "When economists from the World Bank visit poor countries to dispense cash and advice," observed The Economist, as Jim Yong Kim said in 2012, "they routinely tell governments to reject cronyism and fill each important job with the best candidate available. It is good advice. The World Bank should take it." Jim Yong Kim is the most recently appointed president of the World Bank. Some critics,[60] most prominently the author Naomi Klein, are of the opinion that the World Bank Group's loans and aid have unfair conditions attached to them that reflect the interests, financial power and political doctrines (notably the Washington Consensus) of the Bank and, by extension, the countries that are most influential within it. Amongst other allegations, Klein says the Group's credibility was damaged "when it forced school fees on students in Ghana in exchange for a loan; when it demanded that Tanzania privatise its water system; when it made telecom privatisation a condition of aid for Hurricane Mitch; when it demanded labour "flexibility" in Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami; when it pushed for eliminating food subsidies in post-invasion Iraq."[61] The World Bank requires sovereign immunity from countries it deals with.[62][63][64] Sovereign immunity waives a holder from all legal liability for their actions. It is proposed that this immunity from responsibility is a "shield which [The World Bank] wants to resort to, for escaping accountability and security by the people."[62] As the United States has veto power, it can prevent the World Bank from taking action against its interests.[62] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Bank

When the recession began, the national deficit widened to 2.5% of GDP in 1999 and its external debt surpassed 50% of GDP.[13] Seeing these levels as excessive, the IMF advised the government to balance its budget by implementing austerity measures to sustain investor confidence. The De la Rúa administration implemented US$1.4 billion in cuts in its first weeks in office in late 1999. In June 2000, with unemployment at 14% and projections of 3.5% GDP growth for the year, austerity was furthered by US$938 million in spending cuts and US$2 billion in tax increases.[14] Following vice president Carlos Álvarez' resignation in October 2000 over bribery suspicions in the Upper House,[15] the crisis accelerated.[citation needed] GDP growth projections proved to be overly optimistic (instead of growing, real GDP shrank 0.8%), and lagging tax receipts prompted the government to freeze spending and cut retirement benefits again in November 2000.[16][not in citation given] In early November, Standard & Poor's placed Argentina on a credit watch, and a treasury bill auction required paying 16% interest (up from 9% in July); this was the second highest rate of any country in South America at the time.[17] Rising bond yields forced the country to turn to major international lenders, such as the IMF, World Bank and the U.S. Treasury, which would lend to the government at below-market rates, and to comply with the accompanying conditions. Several more rounds of belt-tightening followed. José Luis Machinea resigned as Minister of Economy in February 2001. He was replaced with Ricardo López Murphy, who lasted 8 days in the office before being replaced with Cavallo. In July 2001, Standard and Poor's cut the credit rating of the country to B--.[18] In July 2001 the government instituted an unpopular across-the-board pay cut of up to 13% to all civil servants and an equivalent cut to government pension benefits—De la Rúa's seventh austerity round[19]—triggering nationwide strikes,[20] and, starting in August, it paid salaries of the highest-paid employees in I.O.U.s instead of money.[21] This further depressed the weakened economy. The unemployment rate rose to 16.4% in August 2001[22] up from a 14.7% a month earlier,[23] and it reached 20% by December.[24] In October 2001, public discontent with the economic conditions was expressed in the nationwide election. President Fernando de la Rúa's alliance lost seats in both chambers of the Argentine National Congress, leaving it in the minority. Over 20% of voters chose to enter so-called "anger votes", returning blank or defaced ballots rather than indicate support of any candidate.[25] The crisis intensified when, on 5 December 2001, the IMF refused to release a US$1.3 billion tranche of its loan, citing the failure of the Argentine government to reach previously agreed-upon budget deficit targets,[26] and demanded further budget cuts, amounting to 10% of the federal budget.[27] On 4 December, Argentine bond yields stood at 34% over U.S. treasury bonds, and, by 11 December, the spread jumped to 42%.[28][29] By the end of November 2001, people began withdrawing large sums of dollars from their bank accounts, turning pesos into dollars and sending them abroad, causing a bank run. On 2 December 2001 the government enacted measures, informally known as the corralito,[30][31] that effectively froze all bank accounts for twelve months,[32][33] allowing for only minor sums of cash to be withdrawn, initially $250 a week.[34] The freeze enraged many Argentines who took to the streets of important cities, especially Buenos Aires. They engaged in protests that became known as cacerolazo (banging pots and pans). These protests occurred especially in 2001 and 2002. At first the cacerolazos were simply noisy demonstrations, but soon they included property destruction, often directed at banks, foreign-owned privatized companies, and especially big American and European companies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_economic_crisis_%281999%E2%80%932002%29 Image by Emiism (Own work) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

IMF optimistic on U.S. economy but reveals warning signals

That includes improving child-care and other family-friendly benefits to draw more women into the workforce. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/IVQMe-i-YFc/us-usa-imf-idUSKCN0Z81JZ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
