An Atlas V rocket lifts off at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 41.The mission is to send NASA’s Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. This will be the first U.S. mission to sample an asteroid, retrieve at least two ounces of surface material and return it to Earth for study.
The OSIRIS-REx mission, launching in September 2016, plans to return a sample of asteroid Bennu to Earth in 2023 so that scientists can study pristine material left over from the early solar system. Dante Lauretta, Principal Investigator for OSIRIS-REx, provides an overview of this asteroid sample return mission. Learn more at http://www.nasa.gov/osiris-rex and http://www.asteroidmission.org. NASA's OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe launched on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket assembled in Decatur, Ala. on September 08, 2016 at 5:30 PM NASA's OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe is on the launch pad and poised for liftoff tonight on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket assembled in Decatur, Ala. The launch window opens at 6:05 p.m. CDT. Watch the launch in the window below. OSIRIS-REx is a name that stands for all of the probe's missions. Here they are as explained by principal scientist Dante Lauretta: Origins – Return an asteroid sample for laboratory analysis. "This really is what drives our program. We're going to asteroid Bennu because it's a time capsule from the earliest stages of solar system formation, back when our planetary system was spread across as dust grains in a swi...
On Sept. 6, NASA previewed the science of the Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification Security - Regolith Explorer, or OSIRIS-REx mission, during a pre-launch news conference at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. OSIRIS-REx – the first U.S. mission to sample an asteroid is targeted to launch Sept. 8 at 7:05 p.m. ET to the near-Earth asteroid Bennu, to survey the surface, retrieve at least 60 grams (2.1 ounces) of surface material, and return it to Earth for study. Analysis of the sample will reveal the earliest stages of the solar system’s evolution and the history of Bennu over the past 4.5 billion years.
Retired NASA astronaut, Leroy Chiao, explains what the OSIRIS-REx space probe attempts to achieve by studying asteroid samples.

A United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket, designated AV-067, will launch NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on Thursday, September 8. OSIRIS-REx will travel to the asteroid, called Bennu, in order to bring its surface samples back to Earth for study and experiments in 2023. The rocket will fly in the 411 vehicle configuration with a four-metre fairing, one solid rocket booster and a single-engine upper stage. OSIRIS-REx is NASA's asteroid mission that seeks answers to the questions that are central to the human experience: Where did we come from? What is our destiny? Learn more at http://www.planetary.org. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is traveling to Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid near Earth which may contain the earliest history of our solar system. Bennu is also one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids, as it has a relatively high probability of impacting the Earth late in the 22nd century. OSIRIS-REx will determine Bennu’s properties, which will be critical to know in the event of an impact mitigation mission. Finally, asteroids like Bennu contain natural resources such as water, organics, and precious metals. In the future, these asteroids may one day fuel the exploration of the sola...
This animation shows the OSIRIS-REx Sample Return Capsule (SRC)--which will contain a sample of surface material from the asteroid Bennu--being released from the spacecraft and landing in the Utah desert. The SRC will land on Sept. 24, 2023, marking the completion of a seven-year mission. The pristine sample will allow generations of scientists to study the materials present in our early solar system.
