Novi Ligure

Novi Ligure (Nêuve in Ligurian) is a city and comune north of Genoa, in the Piedmont region of the province of Alessandria of northwest Italy.

The town produces food, iron, steel, and textiles. It is an important junction for both road and railroad.

History

The community of Curtis Nova in 970 was donated by Emperor Otto I to the monastery of St. Salvatore in Pavia, becoming a castle around the year 1000.

Novi was a free commune until 1157, when it fell to Tortona. It was handed over the marquis of Montferrat in 1223, returning briefly to Tortona in 1232–64. In 1353 Giovanni Visconti of Milan and Genoa conquered it. Novi was donated to the latter in 1392, but was occupied by the condottiero Facino Cane in 1409–12. In 1447, after the death of Filippo Maria Visconti, the governors of the city decided to free forever from Milan, and gave it to Genoa. Around this time, a feudal lord Galeazzo Cavanna was Signore di Castel Gazzo, a fortress on the edge of the town. However, the Sforza of Milan retained its possession until the defeat of Ludovico il Moro, when it passed to the French until Andrea Doria conquered the city for Genoa in 1529.

Nirmala Devi

Nirmala Devi, also known as Nirmala Arun (died 1996), was an Indian film actress in the 1940s and a Hindustani classical vocalist of the Patiala Gharana, in far northern India. She is the mother of Bollywood actor Govinda.

Nirmala Devi was the wife of the 1940s actor Arun Kumar Ahuja. She has six children, including Indian film actor Govinda and film director Kirti Kumar. She died in 1996.

Personal life

Nirmala Devi was born on 7 June 1927, in the holy city of Varanasi (then known as Banares), in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Her father, Vasdev Prashad Singh, a jeweler by profession, belonged to the Gaharwar Rajput Vansh (Gaharwar Rajput Clan) and owned a prosperous business in the city. Her mother Shrimati Kusum Devi, a traditional home-maker (housewife), hailed from village Shahganj in the district of Faizabad, from the same province. Nirmala Devi was the eldest of 12 siblings, 9 boys and 3 girls.

Nirmala accompanied her father to Mumbai, then known as Bombay, at the age of 15 to record her first album with the premier music company of that time, His Master’s Voice (HMV). She has performed for AIR and Doordarshan.

Nirmala Srivastava

Nirmala Srivastava (née Nirmala Salve) (21 March 1923 – 23 February 2011), also known as Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, was the founder of Sahaja Yoga, a meditation technique and new religious movement. She claimed to have been born in a fully realised state and spent her life working for peace by developing and promoting a simple technique through which people can achieve their own self-realization.

Early life

Nirmala Srivastava was born in Chindawara, Madhya Pradesh, India to Hindu father and a Christian mother Prasad and Cornelia Salve. Her parents named her Nirmala, which means "immaculate". She said that she was born self-realised. Her father, a scholar of fourteen languages, translated the Koran into Marathi, and her mother was the first woman in India to receive an honours degree in mathematics. Nirmala Srivastava descended from the royal Shalivahana/Satavahana dynasty. Former union minister N.K.P.Salve was her brother and lawyer Harish Salve is her nephew.The Salve surname is one of a number included in the Satavahana Maratha clan.
