In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt declared that the United States had to intervene in the internal affairs of Latin American. In his own words: "if any South American country misbehaves it should be spanked."All US presidents that succeeded him have, in lesser or greater measure, continued to exercise their perceived right over a region often known as “America’s Backyard”.
After more than 400 years of Spanish colonial domination, in 1897 Puerto Rico was given the right to govern over its affairs. only five months later, Spain and the US went to war over the last Spanish colonies in the region. American Forces occupied Puerto Rico.
The Treaty of Paris clearly established that all Puerto Rican affairs were to be decided by the United States Congress.
President Theodore Roosevelt recommended that Puerto Ricans become U.S. citizens.
Despite the overwhelming opposition from the Puerto Rican legislators, in March 1917 the US Congress decided that all Puerto Ricans were now US citizens; but only to be ruled and not be given the rights. Many Puerto Ricans were forced to fight in the America’s wars and many died.
Up to this day not much has changed, as that Treaty of Paris is still valid.

Residents of Puerto Rico have been granted American citizenship by birth since 1917. But a recent poll shows only 43 percent of Americans know Puerto Ricans are actually U.S. citizens.
Another 41 percent believe Puerto Ricans are only citizens of Puerto Rico, but that's not true because Puerto Rico isn't an independent country. And 15 percent of those surveyed say they weren't sure.
To be fair, asking whether residents of Puerto Rico are Puerto Rican or American can be kind of confusing.
The distinction is important because Puerto Rico is in financial trouble with more than $70 billion in debt and its neighbor to the north may help pay its bills. The financial crisis prompted U.S. Congress to come up with a solution this week.
But the same poll found almost a third of those surveyed aren't following Puerto Rico's financial trouble at all.
Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony until 1898 when the United States gained control of the island in the Spanish-American War. Congress passed the Jones Act in 1917, granting citizenship and other rights to residents of the island and creating a representative government.
Puerto Rico remains a territory of the United States, but it has only a nonvoting delegate in Congress, it doesn't vote for president in general elections, and its residents don't pay federal taxes.

Puerto Ricans
Puerto Ricans (Spanish: Puertorriqueños; Taíno: boricua) are the inhabitants or citizens of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is a multi-ethnic nation, home to people of different ethnic and national backgrounds. As a result, some Puerto Ricans do not treat their nationality as an ethnicity but as a citizenship with various ethnicities and national origins comprising the "Puerto Rican people".
Despite its multi-ethnic composition, the culture held in common by most Puerto Ricans is referred to as mainstream Puerto Rican culture, a Western culture largely derived from the traditions of Western European migrants, beginning with the early Spanish settlers, along with other Europeans arriving later such as the Corsicans, Irish, Germans and French, along with a strong West African culture which has been influential.
Puerto Ricans commonly refer to themselves as boricuas. "The majority of Puerto Ricans regard themselves as being of mixed Spanish-European descent. Recent DNA sample studies have concluded that the three largest components of the Puerto Rican genetic profile are in fact indigenous Taíno, European, and African". The population of Puerto Ricans and descendants is estimated to be between 8 to 10 million worldwide, with most living within the islands of Puerto Rico and in the United States mainland. Within the United States, Puerto Ricans are present in all states of the Union, and the states with the largest populations of Puerto Ricans relative to the national population of Puerto Ricans in the United States at large are the states of New York, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with large populations also in Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, Illinois, and Texas.

Puerto Ricans Are US Citizens, But Many Americans Didn't Know That
Residents of Puerto Rico have been granted American citizenship by birth since 1917. But a recent poll shows only 43 percent of Americans know Puerto Ricans are actually U.S. citizens. Another 41 percent believe Puerto Ricans are only citizens of Puerto Rico, but that's not true because Puerto Rico isn't an independent country. And 15 percent of those surveyed say they weren't sure. To be fair, asking whether residents of Puerto Rico are Puerto Rican or American can be kind of confusing. The distinction is important because Puerto Rico is in financial trouble with more than $70 billion in debt and its neighbor to the north may help pay its bills. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt declared that the United States had to intervene in the internal affairs of Latin American. In his own words: "if any South American country misbehaves it should be spanked."All US presidents that succeeded him have, in lesser or greater measure, continued to exercise their perceived right over a region often known as “America’s Backyard”.
After more than 400 years of Spanish colonial domination, in 1897 Puerto Rico was given the right to govern over its affairs. only five months later, Spain and the US went to war over the last Spanish colonies in the region. American Forces occupied Puerto Rico.
The Treaty of Paris clearly established that all Puerto Rican affairs were to be decided by the United States Congress.
President Theodore Roosevelt recommended that Puerto Ricans become U.S. citizens.
Despite the overwhelming opposition from the Puerto Rican legislators, in March 1917 the US Congress decided that all Puerto Ricans were now US citizens; but only to be ruled and not be given the rights. Many Puerto Ricans were forced to fight in the America’s wars and many died.

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse | Puerto Rico
Located on top of 200-foot limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo) is located on the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was built in 1882 by the Spanish government in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. My family and I had a few afternoon hours to kill on our recent trip to Puerto Rico so we drove down there from Rincón to take in the absolutely breathtaking views. I brought along my Panasonic GH2 and Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens - enjoy the video. The Expeditioner's Travel Guide to Puerto Rico
During my short stay in Puerto Rico, I decided to tackle my own Puerto Rico bucket list. Watch as I make new friends over Bacardi, hit the dance floor and salsa, live it up like a rap star, and fly to the small island of Culebra to check out Flamenco Beach, consistently rated one of the beset beaches in the Caribbean, if not the world. *Editor's Note* No rum was harmed in the making of this video, as this trip was purely business. All liquids consumed were actually water, except for that first shot, which I regretted about 2 seconds after the glass touched my lips.

The lighthouse was built in 1882 by the Spanish government in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean.
My family and I had a few afternoon hours to kill on our recent trip to Puerto Rico so we drove down there from Rincón to take in the absolutely breathtaking views. I brought along my Panasonic GH2 and Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens - enjoy the video.

Brought to you by Art VI Advocates. This year’s theme … The Art of Diversity: A Smile is Beautiful in Every Colour. Apropos for local artists who have been asked to submit their interpretation of the theme. The U.S. Virgin Islands is one of the most culturally diverse, ethnically rich and artistically vibrant societies in the Caribbean. Our islands’ history has fostered a unique and diverse fusion of cultures. Appreciate the value of diversity from this group of artists.View close to one hundred works of art – judged by special guest juror Carmen T. Ruiz De Fischler PhD., Museum Director of the University del Turabo in Puerto Rico and founding Director of the Puerto Rico Museum of Art.You can get in on the action too … cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award! You can even create your own artwork out of clay. Potters and clay artists will be on hand to help.Exhibit is for one night only – then artwork will be available only by appointment March 8th through the 18th. One last chance for a public viewing at the Closing Event, Thursday, March 17th.
Sunday – March 6th
Whale Watch boat trip.
There she blows! Watch for the spouting air from a whale’s blowhole! If you’re lucky, a curious one will get up close-and-personal … playing and posing for some amazing photo ops!
Whales migrate to the Caribbean in the winter and spring to breed and give birth to calves. Mothers and calves are often seen from December to April. The Humpback is the most prevalent whale spotted in these waters, although you may see a pilot, orca or sperm whale.
The 50 foot catamaran KeKoa will depart from the Red Hook Ferry Dock at 8:30 and will return at 3:30. An Eco-guide will be on board to talk about whales and other sea life you may see. Bring refreshments – although there may be some beverages sold on board. There is limited shade, so bring sun screen and a hat. You may want to be prepared with Dramamine or the like, as they do sail into open seas. Space is limited so tickets are pre-sold at Dockside Bookstore, Barefoot Buddha Café and East End Secretarial Service in Red Hook Plaza. Happy hunting!

This year’s theme … Magical Hibiscus Galore.
And magical they are … See over one hundred of these beautiful blooms …the perfect image of a tropical island. You’ll be amazed by the many varieties … both traditional and fascinating hybrids. Competition is stiff for entries from St. Thomas, St. Croix and Tortola. The certified hibiscus show judges come from the U.S. Mainland, St. Thomas, St. Croix and the BVI.Interested visitors are known to plan their Virgin Islands vacation around this annual hibiscus show! Admission is free – so be sure to take in this display of tropical beauty.

9th Annual Johnnie Walker St. John Blues Festival
Get your blues shoes on! And get over to St. John for this five-day blues-packed affair! There’ll be a free blues party every night at various St. John locations. But if you can only make it one day … make it Friday or Saturday! With record breaking attendance year after year, another evening of world class Blues under the stars has been added! Now there’s two nights of celebrity concerts in the Coral Bay Ball Field. Don’t miss these star studded shows.
On Friday, eight o’clock, see the International Blues Challenge winner Grady Champion and his band. And the Superhero herself – Ms. Candye Kane. And Blind Pig Record’s recording artist – Albert Cummings.
On Saturday, eight o’clock, see Telarc recording artists’ Moreland and Arbuckle, the “Queen of Memphis” Reba Russell and her band, and the man who inspired John Belushi to create the Blues Brothers - Curtis Salgado and his Big Band.
Food and drinks will be available both nights. So bring a blanket or bring a chair – but please be cool - no coolers. Apropos for local artists who have been asked to submit their interpretation of the theme. The U.S. Virgin Islands is one of the most culturally diverse, ethnically rich and artistically vibrant societies in the Caribbean. Our islands’ history has fostered a unique and diverse fusion of cultures. Appreciate the value of diversity from this group of artists.View close to one hundred works of art – judged by special guest juror Carmen T. Ruiz De Fischler PhD., Museum Director of the University del Turabo in Puerto Rico and founding Director of the Puerto Rico Museum of Art.You can get in on the action too … cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award! You can even create your own artwork out of clay. There she blows! Watch for the spouting air from a whale’s blowhole! If you’re lucky, a curious one will get up close-and-personal … playing and posing for some amazing photo ops!
Whales migrate to the Caribbean in the winter and spring to breed and give birth to calves. Mothers and calves are often seen from December to April. The Humpback is the most prevalent whale spotted in these waters, although you may see a pilot, orca or sperm whale.
The 50 foot catamaran KeKoa will depart from the Red Hook Ferry Dock at 8:30 and will return at 3:30. An Eco-guide will be on board to talk about whales and other sea life you may see. Bring refreshments – although there may be some beverages sold on board. There is limited shade, so bring sun screen and a hat. You may want to be prepared with Dramamine or the like, as they do sail into open seas. Space is limited so tickets are pre-sold at Dockside Bookstore, Barefoot Buddha Café and East End Secretarial Service in Red Hook Plaza. Happy hunting!
