THIS
VIDEO: With moving our solar battery bank outdoors and some windfall from last winter on the ground we saw the opportunity to try our hand at a small timber framing project.
It's been a while since we had a reason to use the Granberg
Chainsaw mills. It's always fine firing them up.
We had a small log chosen that would provide a 6"x6" timber 8' long. If we quartered it we'd have 4 x 3"x3"x8' timbers to work with. We drafted up a set of plans for this frame to utilize this amount of material. The foundation was laid with bricks and a heavy duty pallet.
Finally we set about milling the lumber and then laying out the joinery. It was a great chance to work on our layout skills and using rough cut timbers is just the place to practice.
Once out layout was done avoiding knots and maximizing each timber we began cutting joinery.
We recently added to our hand tool collection with some high quality chisels, hand augers and hand saws. While it was tempting to use power tools, we wanted the full experience with the timber framing project so we did nearly everything by hand. Towards the end we used a powered auger to speed up some of the boring, but in the end we found it was much easier to make mistakes.
Some of the joints we practiced include a through mortis and tenon, half lap, tie-at-the-plate tying joint and tie-below-the-plate tying joint.
Overall this project was a great choice because
Alyssa and I both got to put out hands and minds to using the knowledge we've acquired reading the numerous timber framing books in our collection. Also we now have more respect for the process and how each part contributes to the whole.
We expect this project to help reduce friction and aid our communication as we work on planning and designing our timber frame barndominium. Since we worked together, we can both understand more clearly the project ahead of us. This will help us to succeed and enjoy it more than getting in over our heads.
